Met the group on the Gap trip in Buenos Aires, mixed group, 3 couples and a couple of solo travelers, and my room mate Erik from the US, he at 31 is the baby of the group. Flew down from Buenos Aries to Bariloche a nice little holiday town, also one of the most popular ski resorts in Argentina Lots of lakes, mountains and great views Patagonia a big farming area, many farms (estancias in spanish) are thousands of hectares, the land is pretty rough, they have mainly sheep and red Hereford cattle Lots of meat grill restaurants in Argentina, had some very nice venison and steak. The Argentinians like to have the meat cokked through and not red inside, which suites me fine... read more

Not much to say about this place really..... Great friendly hostel with awards to prove it and it proved to be lovely and social ..... Can't decide if that was genuinely because in an evening people would rather just stay in the hostel, which is located in an elevated position away from it all with the great views of the lake and hills and outside of the very touristy town centre ....or .....whether everyone was just too lazy to hike the hill up and down again after a full day and pay the shockingly high touristy prices for everything down there!! Nevertheless we've really enjoyed a couple of nights here....supermarkets just next door so......Lamb Stew for dinner both nights with tea and biscuits..... Yum yum..... Chilling on the deck taking in the stunning view of the ... read more

We embarked on our 20 hour bus ride from Puerto Madryn to El Calafate at 7 pm. The double decker bus moved similar to a large boat, swaying with the wind and road. Equipped with our iPods and semi-camas (large seats reclining 150 degrees with a legrest), we bounced along; sleeping for about 7 hours through the night. As a girl who is slightly closterphobic and hates to not have control of her transportation, Chloe did surprisingly well. It wasn´t until the 17th hour that she began to have issues. Regardless, after endless hours of boring pampas, we arrived to El Calafate by 3 pm, greeted by sweeping views of the turquoise colored, glacier fed, ginormous Lago Argentina and snowcapped mountains behind it. The town itself seemed to thrive on tourism and an alpine element. Everywhere ... read more

Today was glacier day and after an extremely uneventful breakfast we packed up and headed off. First things first: I opened my present from Michele to discover it was a pair of purple Smart Wool socks! I had been coveting the ones Michele owned, and whether these were new or recycled I so didn't care, loved them and picked my outfit for the day based around them! Puerto Moreno Glacier was really cool bud didn't have a massive WOW factor for me. But I've been spoiled by my travels and kayaking through glaciers in Greenland and the Canadian Arctic followed by Antarctica is hard to beat. The walkway they have created is wonderful, however the dry bumpy gravel road we took on route for a "special treat" was lame and unnecessary. We ended up at this ... read more

Is it day 8? Does it really matter? Feliz Navidad! Today was our travel day getting from Torres del Paine NP in Chile to El Calafate, Argentina. The group went for a 2 hour hike with a stop for a swim that turned out to have leeches, while I stayed behind to leg my leg heal. I attempted to do some electric charging however the refuge turned off the power after half hour so that ended quickly. I started tearing down the tent which included deflating the therma rests and with my new TRX workout in mind, decided the best way to accomplish this feat was with my body weight. Which quickly turned into a cat nap in the sun curled up ensuring true deflation was achieved! I *heart* holidays......... Dressed up Jill in her Christmas ... read more

We flew from Esquel to El Calafate in Argentina. Calafate is the jumping off point to get to places like Perito Moreno Glacier, into Puerto Natales (Chile) and also out to El Chalten - and I did all of these! We stayed in some small cabanas in Calafate and checked in. It being Thanksgiving in the States, Jess wanted to do something special to celebrate. As nowhere seemed to have roast turkey, we booked into a steak restaurant for dinner. However, we had arrived close to lunchtime and so opted for a ´light lunch´of pizza. It turned out to be patagonian lamb pizza and amazing, huge chunks of beautifully marinated, cooked and seasoned lamb, and smothered with cheese. I like these 2 ingredients seperately and never thought to combine them - wow, what a combo!! We ... read more

The pick up was not as early as we thought it might me, given that the bus ride was to be about 5 hrs, and we had an 4x4 excursion booked for the afternoon which was supposed to be for 3 hours. We were collected, and the luggage loaded on the bus, not that there seemed to be an awful lot of room for the bags, but they managed to get them on. After about 30minutes, the guide announced that we had reached the first part of the border control on the Chilean side, where they could ask to go through every bag. Luckily, it must have been break time, as they allowed us to just queue and have our passports stamped. We then drove for about 20 minutes through i suppose no-mans land until we ... read more

Day 35 - Tuesday 15th November 5 minutes from the completion of the hike yesterday my big toe started to ache, and instantly I realised my gout was starting to act up. By the time I reached the end of the trek and we were sitting at the hotel restaurant I could feel my whole foot heating up and swelling so I quickly took one of the gout tablets I had bought from home, but I knew it was too late. During the night my foot ached badly but not too bad so I assumed that I may have dodged a bullet….wrong. Both of us considered how lucky that I didn’t get a gout attack on the hike as it would have stopped us in our tracks. I knew that hadn’t drank enough water on the ... read more

Well, I can tell you now, you´ll be bored by this. You bunch of heathens clearly have no interest in South America´s natural wonders and just want to be reminded of the lightbulb-head I battled against for a year. Pricks. Anyway, now I´m up to the next stage of my trip that involves flying southwards into icey wonderland and trawling back up the country through some of the most stunning scenery the world has to offer, and there aren´t many other people around to make fun of. So continue reading at your peril. After arriving in El Calefate "city" via a dirt road in a bus (at 1.00am instead of 10.00pm as planned thanks to a flight delay), I went straight to bed. In the morning I went to the kitchen for breakfast, and was pleasantly ... read more

Viva Aerolineas Argentinas! Mieliśmy lecieć do Buenos ostatnim lotem dziś. W efekcie loty do Buenos były odwołane, bo miasto zasypywal pył. Rano w tv byl nawet specjalny reportarz, w którym pan dziennikarz wystawiał do kamery palec, którym sekundę wcześniej potarl szybę samochodu. Wczoraj z lotniska w Buenos odwołane było 90 lotów. Armageddon. Zdecydowaliśmy wiec zrobić jakaś półdniową trasę i stanęło na wyprawie jeepami do Cierro Frias. Niesamowita sprawa, bo właściciel Estancii Alice, który powinien zająć się hodowlą steków,... read more
