Hi Guys, So we have arrived in Argentina in the beautiful town of El Calafate! We took a 6 hour bus from puerto natalies which was fine and got checked in to our hostel America del sur which was a tad hard to find but otherwise very nice. We got talking to an Irish guy Alex who is working there he is from Galway and he was very helpful with telling us what there is to do in the area. We headed down into the town for some lunch, we struggled to get money all day the atm's all seemed not to be working so we had to put everything on the card. We had lunch in this lovely cafe and Laura just loved how they brought out some smarties when you got your tea or ... read more

Highs: El Glaciar Perito Moreno, Nakal Yenu hostal Lows: Nothing! Food: We were on a really tight budget, so we had to watch in envy as the guys in the hostal stoked up the BBQ and put 4 chickens and basically half a cow on it. Still, we had a nice salad that night! We´re both becoming hooked on Dulce de Leche, which is kind of like caramel but your allowed to eat it at breakfast! Also, some great ice cream (in Argentina you can get Italian style gelato ice cream). We had Chocolate with Almonds, "Chocalate Delicioso" - does what it says on the tin, and Dulce de Leche with chocolate sheep!!! Day 14: flew down to El Calafate where we stayed in a really nice hostel on the edge of town. Day 15: took ... read more

After an amazingly fun Christmas in Bariloche it was time to head south to see in the New Year in Ushuaia. Ushuaia lies just over 1500 kilometres from Bariloche, so its 4 days of driving, 2 border crossings and a ferry to catch across the Magellan straights to reach our next stop, so with a quick goodbye to the staff at Los Coihunes we get an early start to hit the road… Whilst its summer over here and we’re essentially chasing the sun for most of my trip as we head south we’re heading into colder territory. Ushuaia has an average temp this time of year of 10’C…. So it’s away with the shorts and vest tops, and on with the thermals, lots of layers and sitting on the truck covered in blankets, just as we’re ... read more

We've reached the southern point of our two weeks Patagonian Odyssey...we've reached El Calafate. But first, there was the road from Menelik to El Calafate...some 480km with few gravels kms on the way. I did get 10 extra liters of nafta (fuel) from the Estancia Menelik at a serious premium, but that was what it was...long journey, without a single petrol station on the way. First, 80km on gravels...went smoothly, we left early...life was good... Than 40km on a proper road...nice....than it came...180km on gravels. Sometimes it's fun, when the gravels looks like stones, I don't really like it anymore! It went mainly smoothly...thinking that pretty soon, we are already doing this road one more time, on our way up. The gravels road finished at Tres Lagos...and 2km from Tres Lagos, I found a flooded track. ... read more

Calafate sits on the edge of Argentina 's largest lake 1600 sq kilometre of milky blue glacier water, as our bus drove past the lake we could see icebergs floating in the lake. Our main reason here is to visit the glacier Perito Moreno which is a couple of hours by coach away from Calafate and to travel onto El Chaltèn to see the mountain Fitz Roy. We took the coach to the glacier, first it stopped at the glacier to allow those people who wanted to spend all their time on the walk ways in front of the glacier face, though we did have a chance to get a quick glimpse of this huge light blue glacier which creaked and groaned on occasions, as we stood there transfixed by its size and beauty. We then ... read more

After leaving Rio we arrived in good old Buenos Aries, this place was beginning to feel like home. We had to spend a night here as we could not make a connecting flight straight to El Calafate from Rio. The next morning we had a flight at 6:30am to El Calafate which is down in the south of Argentina. The night before, Zac had gone out waving taxis down to find out the cost of a trip to the airport as we were leaving too early for any shuttle buses. We got up super early and by about 4:30am we were out on the street. We met another guy heading to the airport who wanted to split a taxi but he had been given a quote by the driver of 200 pesos! Zac had been told ... read more

At 8:30am we departed El Calafate by bus. The way was familiar to us having travelled the opposite way a few days previously. While Lady Eileen snoozed Leigh enjoyed the vista. Once Eileen awoke the main topic of conversation was the series of pylons that spanned over two hundred kilometres but were not linked – does anyone know what they are? An easy border crossing and we arrived at Puerto Natales at 2pm. We checked in and left our bags at the Navimag meeting point then spent the day looking for slippers for Eileen and trying to keep warm. Success; slippers purchased. (I was anticipating a stunning pair of carpinchio leather slippers but the reality was more like granny slippers; warm, effective and comfortable – Leigh. And best of all ... cheap! – Eileen.) We dined ... read more

It’s a cracker of a morning, the sun is just below the clouds low down on the eastern horizon, but it is lighting up the snow capped Andes far to the west. Maximo has just picked me up from the hostel and we are speeding west beside Lago Argentino to a favoured fishing spot. Maximo checks my shoe size and after a “wow” there is a hurried u-turn to get a larger pair of wading boots. We were soon out of town clipping along at around 140kph, hardly seeing another car on the road. Both guides (Sergio and Maximo) had Toyota HiLux’s with big cracks through the windscreens. I joked to Eileen later that a cracked windscreen is a badge of honour for fishing guides and that they probably hit the windscreen with a hammer as ... read more

On 21 April we took a bus across the border back into Argentina to the lovely lakeside town of El Calafate, noted as the gateway to the glaciers and trekking. The good weather we had in Chile was forecast to continue in El Calafate so we booked a day trip to visit the Perito Moreno glacier in Los Glaciares National Park. The world heritage status national park covers 600,000 hectares and has 356 glaciers. The largest glacier is Perito Moreno covering 250 sq km. It is 30 km long, 5 km wide at the front and rising to over 60 meters above the level of the water; very big! We chose a perfect day to visit Perito Moreno glacier with no wind and lots of sunshine. First we took the boat out to see one side ... read more
