Since the late summer I have been training for El Vulcan Lanin. Sitting in a rowing machine and training in a studio 4 times a week with a personal trainier. 5 weeks of hiking and climbing in Patagonia. Is my fitness well enough? I really had to try it .... I have been thinking of this event for 4 months now.... I came to San Martin de Los Andes on the 19th of December, 7 days ahead of plan. There could be some waiting because of bad weather or waiting for mountain guides. There are three different weather forecasts in Argentina. The rangers use the military forecast for the Lanin Vulcano. When I went to the local military base on the 20th. they said that the weather would be better the next two days, so I ... read more

Like most travellers, the Lonely Planet is very much our compass for travelling in foreign land. And when I read in it that a place is "almost achingly beautiful" you know I´m going to check it out...and they were so right! And, like so many things in life, we were guided here by a series of mishaps...and I´m so thankful for them because I can´t imagine having spent the last couple of days anywhere else. As for these mishaps let me advise you (as if I need to!) don´t rent a car from someone whose language you only understand about 30% of... but even more importantly don´t ever, ever rent a car from Buenos Aires! Ugh! But perhaps I should start at the beginning... Buenos Aires-wow what a bustling city! We got there on a day ... read more

Ok, so Santiago had a point - Bariloche is beautiful. The weather has flipped, the wind dissapeared and revealed a most beautiful lake, rugged snow-capped peaks, massive lakes, crsytal clear rivers, the whole deal. If you´re into the outdoors, you could happily spend weeks exploring and adventuring here, but unfortunately after our week of intensive spanish, we are leaving at the end of the week. Our two rides over the weekend highlighted the dichotomy of this wee town. On sunday we cycled part of circuito chico along the lake, a picturesque, mostly sealed road circuit with huge monstrosities to attract the tourists. A lovely ride. On saturday we went hunting for some single track, and on our journey ended up in the back waters of town. It didn´t take long to lose the seal on the ... read more

Estancia Colipilli (pronounced Colipiji) is not actually near Zapala. we took at three hour bus from Zapala to a small pueblo called El Huecu. travelblog apparently does not know about El Huecu, so Zapala is the closest i could get. Colipilli is owned by a man named Ashley. He lives and works there in the winters with his 20 year old daughter Sky. they´re originally from california, but have permanently moved down to Patagonia. Patagonia is a sprawling desert with rolling mountains and snow caps. It´s beautiful. it gets really hot in the day (the hottest part of the day is 3) and freezing cold at night. Ashley and Sky picked us up in El Huecu and we piled into a pick-up truck, the back of the pick-up truck, a car, and a wagon. i was ... read more

South America » Argentina » Neuquén » Villa Pehuenia November 5th 2008

Day 107: Tuesday 14th October - Arriving at Estancia Huechahue too sore too ride! Arrive at Estancia Huechahue shortly before midday, after a short hop (3 hours, but that is short in Patagonia) north from Bariloche on the bus. The bus driver has no clue where Huechahue is evidently when I ask him, although I confirmed yesterday when I bought the ticket that the bus passes the Estancia (ranch). Fortunately I spot the miniscule sign to the Estancia from the road and get dropped off just 200 metres past the entrance, otherwise I would have arrived at the next town 25km away! Met by Carrie when I arrive, who although Argentinian speaks exceptional English. She helps me out by booking my 2 flights with LADE for later in Patagonia, I´m lucky as the reservations had expired. ... read more

We learnt another lesson on our second overnight bus and that is that its better to be warm and cramped than spacious and cold. So with the heating broken in cama (sleeper class) and Matts failed attempt to complain to the driver (Leanne could only hear "Frio, Frio") we decided to attempt the unimaginable and sneak up stairs into second class where we were able to find a couple of nice warm seats and finally got some sleep. We arrived in Bariloche which is the heart of the Lakes District of Argentina. What a wonderful site after such a long journey. Although not cold the air was crisp and fresh with hardly a cloud in the sky. Bariloche is surrounded by snow capped mountains and sits on the edge of a labyrinth of small lakes. It ... read more

Yes, green at last. We climbed back into the Andes and wiggled our way around 29 hairpin bends before reaching the Chilean side of the border, huge mountains all around but not a condor in sight. Drove through no-mans land and a 3km tunnel linking the two countries and we popped out the other side into Argentina. Getting past the border officials took longer than expected. We had great difficulty understanding a word as they rabbitted on so fast, sounded nore like a bad dose of verbal diarrhoea than any language we recognised. Two hours later we were through with everything stamped in the correct place and then it was 190km downhill to our first Argentinian destination, Mendoza. Famous for its vinyards and outdoor activities we thought we would do a spot of both. As Nik ... read more

And so after a more than pleasant extended stay in the city of Mendoza it was time to head off into the country side, this time for a spot of camping. Our destination was a small town in the heart of the the Argentine Lake district which is famed for, wait for it, lakes. We arrived in the lovely town of San Martin de los Andes which sits at the end of a huge lake called Lake Lacar (Lago Lacar), set in a valley surrounded by huge rocky mountains. Though out of town, the campsite was perfect. It was in a small wood right on the shore of the gorgeous lake and overlooking a lovely pebble beach, with a nice wee river running by. Decent facilities as well. We pitched our tent (only slightly better than ... read more
