We rented mountain bikes to bike up a nearby mountain, and ride down the ski slopes. Nearly made it to a waterfall along the way, but couldn't quite get there.... read more

After enjoying some great weeks with Scott Braun and then Marc Avrahm Centor, Craig and I are now flying duo for the remainder of the trip. Our time with Centor ended in perhaps the most boring city in South America...Montevideo, Uruguay. Centor flew home from there and Kodish and I spent a few excruciating days waiting on our visas for Brazil to be completed. We spent our time looking for English books, searching for some sort of bar scene at night (which was pretty much non-existant), and arguing with the hotel owner about having an extra fan in our 5,000 degree hotel room. This hotel was a piece...the stupid Lonely Planet guide book literally said it was, "gorgeous with slightly over-the-top furniture." Trust me...it was most certainly not. This place had no shower curtain, so the ... read more

PART III: Villa La Angostura: January 1-2 Despite the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful landscape of San Martin de los Andes, this city is visibly a ski resort built for tourists or wealthy Argentineans. There was, in my view, a lack of authenticity as the Switzerland architecture seemed displaced. On the morning of January 1, we headed to Villa la Angostura through a green road surrounded once again by snow topped mountains. The colourful Argentinean lupins were growing along the road and created a magical pastoral landscape filled with cows and horses. We arrived at our charming wooden hostel for a well-deserved rest. The next morning on January 2, we took a boat through the Andes to get to the Parque de los Arrayanes, an unique park known for its rare arbutus-like trees called arrayanes. The three-hour ... read more

Wow, having our own vehicle definetly had its advantages. Driving into the mountians from San Martin, we entered a road called the seven lakes road, connecting San Martin to Villa la Angostura. The first half was paved, while the second half was a one track dirt road that sliced through the dense mountain forest. Soaring snow capped peaks rose, while aquamarine rivers and tributaries cascaded there way towards the lakes surrounding La Angostura. The mountain lupins were in full bloom and flowers could be seen in the alpine meadows above. Quite simply a spectacular drive that would have been missed had it not been for our trusty truck. Villa La Angostura turned out to be a lovely mountain village situate on a giant lake. We soon found a great Hosteria with a firm bed and bathroom, ... read more

Well, we arrived in San Martin de los Andes after a grueling 1000km drive south from the Mendoza priovince. For the most part, the drive continuesd along the volcanic and desert landscape that is characteristic of this region until it abruptly changed to forested mountain slopes about 20km outside of this small mountain village. It is built like a mini swiss alps village and includes the liederhosen. Buildings our made from wood beams and the village faces a beautiful mountain lake, it is a nice change from the desert landscape that we had been travelling through during the previous days. Found a decent little campgroud 4 km outside of town to set up camp and relax for a couple days. We ended up staying here over the New Year´s holidays, enjoying a wonderful New year that ... read more

PART II: San Martin de los Andes December 30-31 December 30 After camping on a rocky along the Rio Grande , we woke up early to get to San Martin de los Andes through a wonderful road surrounded once again by impressive volcanoes and magically shaped mountains. The campingsite was located along the lake surrounded with mountains; we could sit on the beach with a glass of beer and admiring the sunset. This same night, we went to restaurant in the village where I ate a delicious regional meal, el ciervo (deer) accompanied with their local beer. A delicious red meat topped with a wild mushroom sauce..mmmmm. This is when I love Argentina! December 31 We spent a quiet day at the village of San Martin de los Andes. This small village reminded me of a ... read more

So, already on this little "trip" of mine I was able to fulfill one childhood dream that I had--seeing the Amazon--but in some brilliant stroke of luck, I've spent the last two days completing my other childhood dream, working on a dinosaur dig! The Centro Paleontològico del Lago Barreales (or Proyecto Dino) is located a little more than an hour to the northwest of Neuquén, in a semi-desert area full of fossilized animals and plants. The entire area is incredibly rich in such paleontological treasures and boasts being home to the world's largest known carnivore, the 14m, 8 ton Giganotosaurus Carolinii as well as the largest known dinosaur period, the 40m long, 18m high Argentionsaurus huinculensis. Over the past six years that it's been open, the scientists have found over 800 bones at the site alone. ... read more

Bad news, chaps: it´s definitely blogging weather in South America. Just when we thought all the stuff we´d heard about it being utterly miserable in Patagonia at this time of the year was wrong, the heaven opened, confining us to barracks and me to the computer for the first time in.... well, it´s been quite a few weeks. (You lucky, lucky people.) We have landed in a small town called San Martin de los Andes which, as the name implies, is right on the edge of the Patagonian Andes. With impeccable timing, we seem to have arrived at a time when there is too much snow for trekking but not quite enough for skiing, so we will be making tracks (geddit?) soon; first thing tomorrow morning, to be exact. But first, we´d better fill you in ... read more

Hi all. Yes, we have been home now for a month, and yes, this is very overdue, but we wanted to write about the highlights of our last three weeks of our trip. We especially wanted to take the opportunity to show our friends and family that live out-of-state our last bunch of photos. Enjoy the last four journal entries! San Martin de los Andes: After climbing Volcano Villarica in Chile, we headed east for Argentina. After some debate on where to go, we opted for the sleepy town of San Martin de los Andes. We were so happy that we did! It is a very beautiful resort town, surrounded by amazing scenery. The highlight of our stay there was doing the Seven Lakes Tour. This is a tour that is quite popular for tourists to ... read more
