I´ve now been in Bariloche for 4 days, but it feels like several weeks worth of experiences. I think I am still in culture shock to some degree, or maybe I´m just trying to get used to this new rhythm. Actually, I still don´t quite know what the new rhythm is! Whereas I´d expected to take Spanish classes in a group every day, it turns out that there is no one else at my level (a sort of not-quite-beginner level, but muddy and messy enough to not be with one of the more advanced groups!) so my only choice is to take one-on-one lessons. I´ve had two such lessons so far, with Silvi, a very patient and warm teacher who is originally from Buenos Aires. I go to her house for lessons: she owns a beautiful ... read more

... the truth is I never left you. Well technically thats a lie, seeing as I have stamps in my passport that say I left for 2 weeks to visit Chile. But you get the idea, and I'm now back in the land of steak. Except I'm now camping in the land of steak, which means that steak is kind of off the menu. At least for the time being. Otherwise I could have called this entry steaks and lakes, which would have had a nice ring to it. From Petrohue, we got a bus to Puerto Varas, intending to get a bus crossing the border from there. Unfortunately, we were told that there were no buses with space left for 2 days. This presented a problem, but we decided to plow on, and get a ... read more

So here I am in San Carlos de Bariloche (apparently this town is not an option on this blog so I chose San Martin de Los Angeles, the next closest town!) in the heart of Argentina´s Lake District. I will probably be here for 2 weeks studying Spanish at a school called "Spanish in the Mountains" and staying in a family homestay situation. It took me 23 hours to get here on the bus!!!!!!!!!! I rode in a "semi-cama" seat which means that the seat reclines halfway back, and there is a foot rest. But believe me, after 23 hours it ain´t no picnic. I am now frantically trying to reconsider the rest of my travel plans in order to avoid similarly long bus rides. But there are such great distances in Argentina, I think I ... read more

(Written by Mark) We met up with my cousin Adam and his friend Jay, and after a fun night in Bariloche, headed out in our rented Chevy Corsa sedan for a trip on the Ruta 7 Lakes, a mountain road connecting San Martin de los Andes and San Carlos de Bariloche through 2 connected Parques Nacionales - Lanin and Nahuel Huapi. This was our first rented car trip in the area, and it was only the second time the two city slickers from NYC had been camping. Adventure was in the cards as we selected a remote lake and hot spring for our first night's destination, Lago Queñi and the associated Termas de Queñi. The road to the lake was hard to find. After driving the long way around to avoid a 4 wheel drive ripio ... read more

14th January, Pucon y San Martin, Argentina We got a 6 hour bus to the lake district of Argentina.. We have to be in Buenos Aires for the spanish classes starting soon, so we thought we´d have a few days in the lake district 1st. While waiting for the coach, i needed the loo, so had to run back to the hostel (i coudnt use the one at the bus station as jake had spent the last of our money on bloody pastries!).. back at the hostel, the owner called over to me, i thought he was going to start questioning me about using the loo after we´d checked out, but much to my embarrassment he walked me over to a pile of washing, which was obviously from our room, on top of the towels, he ... read more

Lakes , lakes and more lakes. Well after these 18 hours in 2 busses arived to San Martin. Could be Interlaken, but then with spanish spoken. Beautiful village, nice walks and lakes allover. Rented a car and went to discover the Siete Lagos (seven lakes), Camping at a beautiful lake with only 10 other tents or so, and wonderful bird as our neighbour. From San Martin 4 hours bus to Bariloche, again huge lake, great mountains and very Schweits. NOw it was time for some work and we rented a bike for two days, and went to bike in the mountains with all these lakes, with all camping equipment. I am still amazed of us :-). We took a walk in a beautiful forest and finished in a very simple camping at Colonia Suisa (again, Suisa ... read more

Le ... read more

The Iguazu falls were spectacular! We were blown away. We spent the first day exploring the Argentinian side of the falls. It was pretty easy to get there by local bus from the bus station. They are just so huge and powerful! We could hear them clearly way before we saw them. We got a speed boat ride right in underneath them ( the Devil´s mouth). It was great fun! We were delighted to get drenched as it was very hot. We took a trip through the park where we saw tucans and alls sorts of exotic plants and trees. The Brazilian side, the next day was just as jaw- dropping! Here we could see the actual length of the falls-I think about 3km approx. We took an organised tour here from the hostel-it was easier ... read more

After getting off the boat in Puerto Montt, we headed to Bariloche to try and organise a camping trip. I also needed to book my onward bus journey to Tucuman in time for Christmas - this turned out to be a bit of a nightmare because I had forgotten I was travelling very close to Christmas and so most bus companies were booked solid until well after the 25th. Finally though, I got the precious ticket (40 hours long, and allegedly with vegetarian meal!) Then we headed off to San Martin de los Andes, a few hours north of Bariloche to start camping. Luckily for me, the girls (Taryn and Anna) said they could make some space for me in their little 2 person tent and so all I needed to do was get a sleeping ... read more

I woke up by somebody swearing besides me. It was Pablo, he did not find his mountain sunglasses. You need sunglasses now ? I said. The time was about 02:00, and I had slept about two hours. It was dark inside as well as outside the refugio. And cold. I think there had never been light or heating in that mountain refugio. There has been a change in weather, Mario said. No wind outside, I make the breakfast now, he said. Hearing that, there was no reason for being in the sleeping bags anymore. We were restless and did a last check of daypacks. Probably for a long day. Personal things which should not be carried to the summit were stowed aside. I checked the temperature, and made a decision. Better using many thin layers, you ... read more
