Patience leads to virtue they say, or in this case, our car! After a lounging weekend of watching 3 or 4 world cup games, and exploring the underbelly of Guayaquil to find the cheapest food possible, we returned to the hectic shipping ports of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Having a pretty solid idea of what was to pan out for the day, we used our taxi driver Marlo again, to chauffeur us around, from port to port and weasel our way into people´s lunches to get our paper work signed, copied, and handed over to the right people. Our mission to get our car would require all the copies we had, and in addition, getting some of them stamped by the head Aduana office at the principle port of Marítimo. Then and only then, could we utilize ... read more

Day two in Bariloche was just Lucy and I again, as Stella had headed off to Ushuaia, the ends of the earth! We'll meet up with her again on Tuesday in Buenos Aires. The day started off with a heavy mist over the lake and the town in the morning, so we decided to devote ourselves to chocolate tasting research in town, before heading off to Cerro Campanario. We got slightly distracted on our chocolate tasting mission by a gorgeous handbag shop called Prune , and each ended up with two new Argentinian handbags. Nice work! We then made our way to the famous Mamuschka for morning tea, chocolate purchasing and some tasting. By the time we finished the mist was clearing, so plenty of time to explore the town in the sunshine. It made for ... read more

March 30 and 31st we spent on planes, trains and omnibusses and arrived in Bariloche 40 hours later. We purchased deluxe "camas" which allowed us to recline the seats flat like a bed. Our little hotel was right downtown. What it lacks in size and comfort it more than makes up for in antiquated electrical design. The light switch inside the shower makes me laugh. We have been able to go for hikes and used a "teleferrico" or ski gondola. While the weather has been sunny, it has been very windy. We arrived in time for Semana Santa a time for people in big cities everywhere to get out of dodge. Bariloche is probably much noisier during the day because of it. There is a lot of construction still going on and it is Saturday. We ... read more

The View from Up Above

Barry, being Barry, had some contacts with 2 world-class fly fishing guides. These are the guys who took out George Bush Sr when he visited Argentina. We set up a 2 day drift boat trip in the small town of San Martin. To get to this out-of the-way little town, we had to drive 5 hours up the famous 7 Lakes Road. This drive takes my number one for best drives in the world. Green lake after green lake, mountains, flowers and perfect evening lighting giving a soothing feel to the landscape. We were able to score front seats on the top of our double decker bus so we had a great panoramic view. When we arrived, we were greeted at the bus station by our guide who gave us a ride to our apartment where ... read more

And would you believe it, we found one! Luckily it was in a museum, and someone gave us directions. We came here as we were curious about the dinosaur bones and footprints, but also partly as it's on the way to Puerto Madryn where we're told you can swim with sea lions! Neuquén was a nice enough city, but a little bit quiet after the others we'd been to. It did have a river with a little man made beach overlooking a forest and hills (sorry, no pictures). The water was very clean and even though it was close to freezing I was brave enough to have a bit of a swim. After this we had a craving for mexican food, so we asked someone and got directed to a place called Bambu. Turned out it ... read more

Hey everyone, Thanks again for all your comments, its great to see that people are enjoying the blog and following our adventure! After Mendoza, we headed into Patagonia region, first stop, Bariloche! The drive was beautiful through Patagonia´s Lake District, turquoise waters, mountains and rolling terrain. We arrived in Bariloche and stepped off the bus into surprisingly different weather. It was our first introduction to Patagonian winds and quite a temperature difference from the 40 degree weather in Mendoza! Bariloche is a beautiful town - situated right on a lake, with mountain back drop and the entire town on a hill facing these incredible views. We stayed at a great hostel, Hostel 1004, which was on the 10th floor and overlooking the lake. That day we walked around uptown (discovering that this area is famous for ... read more

Our first break along our hike

In my last report, we were in Pucon Chile. The journey following from there, was one of the best journeys we have had until now! We first drove shortly from Pucon to cross the border to Argentina. Though it was already the 3rd time we crossed the border between these 2 countries, we were excited yet afraid as it was the first time we were about to cross with the car we just rented, and we hoped there will be no problems with the paper work - this is not Europe, and so crossing borders with a car requires special permit, power of attorney etc. We indeed had a small problem, regarding the car insurance, but somehow, the clerk in the Argentinian border found what he was looking for in our papers, and we got the ... read more
