We headed wast. Towards the mountains, through fields and farmland. We spent the day driving through Western NSW – or its doppelganger at least. Stands of gum trees as windbreaks, flat fields, grain silos, farmers in trucks, billboards advertising tractors and agrochemicals....only the billboards were in Spanish and the utes were on the wrong side of the road. But looking out the window as the sun set, the reddish glow of the dying sun flickering through the roadside stands of gum trees, one could have been forgiven. Once in Córdoba we made our way to the Hostel Aldea. Not too bad, a bit big with plenty of backpackers types. It was a bit odd, and a little out of the centre. At one stage in its life it was either a school or a mental asylum ... read more

Next up was Cordoba. First of all the hostel we stayed in was really good, the owner was very friendly and helped you with anything you wanted whilst his 1 year old daughter wandered around sticking out her freakishly long tongue and trying to drink everyones beer. The first night we just sat in the lounge and chatted to people which became a bit of a theme i.e we didn't manage one night out despite the nightlife supposedly being really good. We got a massive takeaway which we went to many times, made more interesting by the two women who run it who would give the thumbs up and talk about how they knew Lionel Messi as a kid, asking us about the Royal Wedding etc which I did my best to reply to in very ... read more

A week in Argentina and it hasn’t lived up to my expectations…yet. I’ve been to 3 cities in the North and they’ve all been kind of disappointing. I started in Salta by dropping my camera down the toilet, so that is now broken, but it didn’t make too much difference to my time there as there’s not much to see anyway. Then we went to Mendoza where there are hundreds of vineyards, which we toured by bike. This was fun, but for a girl who doesn’t like red wine I was kind of limited as it's pretty much red or nothing. At the moment we’re in Cordoba, the second biggest city in the country. I’m happy to finally be somewhere with more than one lane of traffic, interesting sights and cosmopolitan feel, but it’s still not ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Mina Clavero March 21st 2011

Mina Clavero was a much anticipated destination of ours. Seeking refuge from the large cities, especially after the party hardy adventures of Cordoba, we were anxious for camping and time alone with nature. The drive was beautiful, even though it was raining and overcast. We ledt from Cordoba and headed out of the city up through mountain ranges, winding snake-like roads lead us up and over the mountains over rolling green hills. Ironically, as we were boarding the bus in Cordoba an old man asked us about our plans, as he noticed our bags and camping gear. He advised us to stay away from Mina Clavero, that it was a tourist destination but not beautiful like the town he is from, another 2 hours south of MC. He told us the real beauty lies beyond the ... read more

The weekend was very quiet since it was very hot on Friday and raining on Saturday. I went in the center for some shopping (food) and everytime I go there, I discover some new funny shops or nice places. Disco was planned too, but due to some complications and the high level of tiredness, this was cancelled. Thus, talking, TV, eating, baby and dog sitting, and reading were the main activities. Today (Sunday) I crossed half Córdoba (I felt like an alian in some barrios...) and bought an Argentinian SIM card: 005493516460314. Tonight I'm going to leave Córdoba and take the bus to Mendoza, the city of Argentinian wine. I'll miss this city, but I heard only good things about Mendoza. You'll read soon about what I think of this city. ... read more

Preface 1: I apologise for tipos and bad English. I usually write my entries in the evening after long days and either on an Argentinian keyboard or on my cell phone. Preface 2: Who is reading my blog at 12 pm (Argentina) / 4 am (Switzerland)?? You're planning a trip to Córdoba? Visit the Parque Nacional del Condorito! Already the bus trip to the Sierras is amazing (2h) and having around 25 degrees compared to the 34 in the city is very nice. The hiking through the park is comparable to a Niederhorn trip, but there's just silence, no people, and an endless view. (Un)fortunately, we didn't see any pumas or snakes. However, after 2h we reached the canyon where the condores fly. It's one of only a few places in the world, where these birds ... read more

After the cabalgada yesterday, I needed a relaxed day in the city. First I visited the museo de la memoria, which is about the people that were killed during the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional (70s/80s) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Reorganization_Process http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Perla_(centro_de_detenci%C3%B3n) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_War). Unfortunately, some of the museums here aren't very informative and I didn't learn a lot about what happened and why. However, the museum is in the building where the people were jailed and tortured and one could somehow feel that very nasty things happened there. The museo histórico provincial Marqués de Sobremonte shows the life style of upper class Cordobeses in the 18th/19th century. Unfortunately, photographs aren't allowed. The only cool places at the moment in the city: shopping centers, museums, and cine... read more

Tuesday (8th) was the horse riding day. Marcelo, el polista, picked us up at the hostel and brought as to Cabalonga, about 1h from Córdoba (West). Although one can't compare the material to Swiss standards, everything worked and the horses looked fine and were very nice. We did a 3h trip through the (pre-)Sierras and the landscape was simply beautiful. Afterwards asado (what else) :) I learned a lot about politics and daily life in Argentina from Marcelo's father. E.g.: A single person needs about 2500 Pesos per month, a family about 5000 to live more or less quietly. The cook in the close bar-restaurant gets 100 Pesos per working day (works there Thursday-Sunday), an employee who's paid by the government gains up to 7000-8000 (pesos->francs: 1/4). This year are many elections here in Argentina and ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba » Alta Gracia March 9th 2011

On Monday (7 March), Kelly (from Brazil) and I went to Alta Gracia, a little town in the Southwest of Córdoba. This is one of the places where (rich) Argentinians spend their holidays. The differences between the life style of the original habitants and the tourists is quite striking. But Alta Gracia is also known for a beautiful little church and the grotto of the virgin from Lourdes (gruta de la virgen de Lourdes) and since Monday and Tuesday were holidays because of the carnaval, many Argentinians pilgrimaged either to the virgin or the tennis court of Alta Gracia. Another highlight of this town is the Che Guevara museum (I would call it Che Guevara church...). Che used to live here as a child because of this asthma and this house is now a museum, which ... read more

Hey, quick update from the city of Cordoba, since the last entry sleep has been difficult to come by. From Chile we came back over the border to Argentina, making for the city of Mendoza, hoping to find somewhere comfy to bed down, as the last place we stayed in Santiago was a little ´different´. So upon arrival in Argentinas wine producing capital we followed the big star in the sky and came upon a small inn. We asked the keeper if he had any rooms available but was told that there was no rooms at the inn, and that we should look somewhere else. So we were put back out into the night where we traversed the city asking inn keeper after inn keeper only to be told the same story, no room at the ... read more
