We started our last week with dinner with friends of Mark's from Chevron. A few live here in BA and one is on a trip with three friends. We had a fun dinner at Camp Bravo, we ordered many items and shared the food, the wine and conversation flowed. We went out to a club after and we did not get back to our apartment until after 3 am. We were surprised to see how many people were out in the middle of the night. We also visited Casa Rosada, the President of Argentina holds meeting here. Evita also addressed the people from the balcony. We were on our way to La Boca to watch fireworks. This was a questionable decision to begin with, people get robbed in La Boca in the middle of the day. ... read more

So we had our first incident of the adventure. After having taken the ferry back to Buenos Aires we took off for Ushuaia. The flight seemed to be progressing normally until we were infomed by the captain that we had developed a problem with our front tyres upon take-off and were required to make an emergency landing. Little did we know we had been circling the countryside of BA for the last 2.5 hours instead of progressing on our southerly flight path. I thought I recognized that farm! The pilots then executed a low level "fly-by" of the airport so ground staff could asertain the extent of the damage to the front tyres/landing gear. We were advised that we were going to land and that it might be a little bumpy. The landing was smooth with ... read more

Renting a bike is a easy and cheap way to spend the day. You can rent a bike and just take off or pay for a bike tour. I would only do the tour if I was alone and wanted company on my ride. The city is full of bike lanes that are physically separated from the street. We rented from La Bicideta Narana located in Palermo at Nicaragua 4817B between Thames and Jorge Luis Borges. The cost was 40 pecoes for one hour and 120 for 4 hours. We rode for 3 1/2 hours and they prorated the fee. The bike included a helmet and the bikes have a basket. The company also has a location in San Telmo. I would recommend the Palermo location because it is near multiple parks. We rode around the ... read more

Today we decided to go back to Museo Nacional De Bellas Artes. The special exhibit La Seduccion Fatal Imginarios Eroticos was closed due to rain. The metro station near our apartment was also closed due to rain so we took the bus. I have a picture of me in the rain, with my rain coat and rain pants. The Museo is free so we just stopped to see what we missed on our last visit. Mark got some pictures which are attached. We also met my couisin Barbara and Gigia for tea and coffee, they are on a tour around South America and me met between their activities. It was great seeing someone from home. Tonight we are having dinner with people Mark worked with who live in Buenos Aires. After our visit we just walked, ... read more

I distinctly remember a certain night in the summer of 2003 when I was waiting tables at Landry’s Seafood House. I took care of a table that started at disaster and then quickly proceeded further downhill. While I certainly could have avoided my own mistakes, many were honestly outside of my control. However, as any former or current server knows, you should never blame a colleague for your table’s gripes. As a result, my table berated me the entire meal; all to my face…but entirely in Spanish under the assumption that I couldn’t understand them. News Flash: This is Houston. It may not be Miami, but Spanish is pretty integral to getting by here; however cursory the exposure. Spanish is my second language, and I understood everything they said to me that day, but I played ... read more

Our 3 weeks in BA are quickly coming to end, what an amazing time here. Below is an extract on some of what we have been up to. Tobs spent a day taking Spanish lessons. She really enjoyed it and that evening ordered dinner in spanish and got me my steak rare! I, on the other hand, am going to go with the point, smile and nod technique throughout the trip! I was interested though that the spanish teacher requested the $35 USD for the class to be paid to their Swiss Bank account. We spent an afternoon taking tango lessons. I was pretty confident going in, having watched a few shows in various parts of the city, it seemed that the guys role was to walk, whilst the female did the majority of the dancing ... read more

On the first day of the new year we began our adventure! It did not start glamorously, with a 7am start and one sore head from the celebrations the night previously. Though as we discovered nothing cures a hangover quicker than 29 hours of travelling! That's right, as we booked these tickets on points, we couldn't get the direct flight to Buenos Aires ("BA"). Instead we took this wonderful journey, Shannon Airport to London Heathrow to Newwark New Jersey. From there we had 3 hours to get across Manhattan to JFK and catch a flight to our final destination. Long, but we made it! Our first impressions of the city are: There are big, wide, leafy streets, and in Palermo (where we are staying) there are lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. Lots of dogs! We took a tour of Teatro Colon a beautiul Opera House. It is located in central BA. We purchased tickets for about $15 US dollars and were told the next tour in English was in an hour and a half. We went out to lunch and came back in time for the tour. I recommend the tour, the opera house was designed by three architects, the first two died before the project was complete. The materials to build the opera house were imported from Europe, beautiful marble in different colors. Some of the walls are covered in gold, real gold not gold paint. There is a workshop in the opera house that makes all the sets, clothes and even the shoes used in the productions. I have included pictures of the opera house. Mark my husband ... read more

Rachel arrived and now we are three. It is great having her here. We took a yellow on and off bus around the City. I would not recommend it. You wear a head set and the information about what you are seeing is never complete. It will say this building is important because and then it will cut out. We never got a full explaination without the info cutting out. When it was not giving us info it played music that could give you a headache. We did get to see parts of town we would never visit like La Boca which is not a place you would want to walk around. If you want a tour I would take a private company tour not the yellow bus. Book stores are very popular here. We have ... read more

I was all packed and ready to leave for Cordoba but in the morning there was a thunder storm. On the news I saw that all holidaymakers had been evacuated from the beach, somebody was trapped by a falling tree and parts of Buenos Aires were flooded. The weather was forecasted to be no better in Cordoba so I decided to hold off my travel plans for another day. I spent the morning thoroughly planning my last 2 weeks in Buenos Aires for the end of February and integrating it with trips to Montevideo in Uruguay and a weekend on a ranch, and using the hostel I’m staying in now as a base. Once the rain stopped I went out to change my money from US dollars to pesos after my unsuccessful attempt to get a ... read more
