The two weeks at El Firulete went by very quickly. Going to Spanish lessons became more of a routine, and I was beginning to feel more restless wanting to leave Buenos Aires behind. I decided to visit Uruguay briefly after my Spanish lessons were over, instead of making my way up to the falls slowly, as booking a bus to the Igazu Falls just before Christmas can be difficult, and I didn´t want to make my trip more complicated by stopping at small towns. I´ve managed to to learn more Spanish grammar and improved my vocabulary even though my enthusiasm was steadily declining, finding myself chatting away with Monica about past adventures (which I suspect she enjoyed as much as I did). No doubt to spice things up she arranged the viewing of an Argentine film ... read more

Hola Amigos Last week I was busy job searching - I have a job already (starts in March) but am checking out all the options. I think I will take a job that pays a little less, but offers me free Spanish courses. I´ve been taking some, and can´t really afford it, so free ones is a good idea. This past week I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Great time, the woman there are awesome. The city is very European looking, lots of old buildings, etc, but the streets are littered with garbage. On garbage night, people would put there stuff out, but 10 mins later poor people (who are surprisingly dressed quite well) would tear through the garbage taking whatever looked like it might be worth something. Argentina is in serious economic problems, so we ... read more

Buenos Aires ("Good Airs" in Spanish, originally meaning "Fair Winds") is the capital of Argentina and its largest city and port, as well as one of the largest cities in Latin America. The people of Buenos Aires are known as porteños ("people of the port"), acknowledging the major historical importance of the port in the development of the city and the whole nation. Buenos Aires is, in a certain way, a metaphor for Argentina. Its streets and surroundings gather over half of the country's population and represent its political, economic and cultural heart. It was home for Argentine writers Jorge Luis Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Ernesto Sábato and Victoria Ocampo. And Maria Eva Duarte (Evita Peron), Carlos Gardel (a synonym of tango ), latin American revolutionary and political leader Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, not to ... read more

We thought we were really smart, having found an e-mail cafe for only US$1 an hour. The catch is that it runs at the pace of a snail with a bad limp! Oh well, I will have to keep this short... We’ve been exploring Buenos Aires for the past few days. Went to a graveyard which was VERY creepy. It is where all the rich elite of the city are buried. Instead of your average grave, it is full of huge family vaults, some large enough to be mini-chapels. If you peer through the glass you can see the coffins inside. Some of the more ancient ones had the doors open slightly and we were daring each other to look inside. Many had steps going down deep into the ground, and you could see the many ... read more
