We had been looking forward to this part of our trip following endless recommendations and backpacker hype. We are pleased to report that BA met and exceeded all our expectations, Its a wicked city and heres why... The city has a distinct European feel to it and walking around the streets, you could almost be in Paris or Barcelona. The architecture is impressive and the streets (in the main) are clean and safe. There are endless wicked bars, restaurants and funky shops and everything is dirt cheap!!! Locals are friendly and fun loving and despite the trecherous 80´s with Mrs Maggie T doing little for Anglo-Argentinian relations, we were welcomed with open arms and smiley faces. On advise we stayed at the Garden House Hostal in San Telmo, which was like living with yer mates in ... read more

Greetings and welcome to our much anticipated travelblog! After some running around to the passport office, some hugs here and there and some salty tears, Lindsay and I finally were reunited in the Vancouver International Airport. Karina (my sister) Matt (her boyfriend) and Rosa (their good friend), met us with smile, jokes and open arms in Toronto. After spending a week with them I was totally converted into a die hard Marxist and vegan for life, (well, perhaps not to radical, but close). Lindsay had a great week in Montreal with Michelle, snowball fights, late nights and rowdy Quebecois. Now we’ve been tossed from chilly, relatively quiet, wintery Eastern Canada into noisy, boisterous, humid and summery Buenos Aires, federal capital of Argentina. We are smiling, sweating, sleepy and stunned by the city’s smells, noises, action and ... read more

I am starting my last week in Buenos Aires...with a light storm! First time in 3 weeks I got rain on my way to school...and like in any city it is when it is raining that you can't get a cab!!! Last week in BS AS for me and then HOLIDAYS....and first Sao Paulo. This weekend was a little slower in terms of visits. I started with a "busy" Friday night: Restaurant and the "unique" Argentinian meat, then a Jazz club and a trendy BS AS bar adviced by locals...conclusion no saturday morning this week ;-) Saturday, 35 degrees and I started looking into the future: I will start with Ushuaia and then go North...I already identified 21 sites/places I would like to visit. Three months is not that long after all. Sunday: San Telmo. It ... read more

This is Sara narrating this entry. Well, after a long weekend at Iguazu Falls, we are back in the city for a few hours. After a longer than expected walk to the airport, we had a fairly empty plane to Iguazu. Only about 30 people on a plane that held 150. We got a meal for a journey of only 90 minutes, so the service was pretty good. Puerto Iguazu was very beautiful but even more hot and humid than Buenos Aires. Our hostel was small but cute, but there was some admiring of hostels with pools on the shuttle from the airport. We relaxed with a 2 hour nap before dinner and ate a nice meal on the main drag of town. The next morning we got up early (7 am!!) and headed for ... read more

January 28th, 2006, second day in Buenos Aires day 23 of our cruise of 105, 82 to go. Montevideo, Uruguay was beautiful. We did no organized tours and just walked until I dropped- see picture! The gaucho museum is in a splendid mansion from 100 years ago. We hit town on a flea market day… heaven! I bought an emerald stone mounted on silver for 10 $ US- maybe glass and tin but I love it. Cost of living is so difficult that old rich families are selling their silver, jewelry and expendables for little. We have been in Buenos for 2 hot days. We participated in 2 organized tours. First was a tango show and steak diner last night and this morning, we took the highlights of the city tour- it was very hot, maybe ... read more

Marche de los Madres The Day Before . . . A day of exploring the city of Buenos Aires leads us to the city center. We end up at Casa Rosada which is the Argentine's version of White House, without the lawn or green areas, but with just as much security. The photographer in me wanted to capture this landmark for my journal. However, there were several gates up preventing us from getting a good shot. As I struggled in vain, we were approached by a friendly cop that told us about a protest that would be happening tomorrow in Plaza de Mayo, and directed us to where they were setting up. In the middle of the plaza, there is a huge tower constructed solely of metal pipes with a banner full of black and white ... read more

Avoid the Silent Ripoffs At Nicole´s suggestion, we went to visit the botanic and japenese gardens in our neighborhood. We´d stayed up until late last night, although we didn´t go out, we ended up not leaving the internet cafe until after midnight. After my whole ice cream ordeal, we decided to just make it a quiet easy night, so we watched a cheesy soft-core porn movie and criticized/analyzed the "actors", lighting, and cinematography as only two women can. The next morning (or after 1pm) we head off for breakfast and we return to the same cafe where Danny is a waiter. He´s off today, and the plate of eggs are now half the size, but I think nothing of it..that is until I get my bill, and it´s twice the price. The menu says 2 pesos ... read more

San Telmo (For sure) Before I left home, I researched a way to get vaccines for less money as Nicole paid a whopping $400 for hers!! I found a place in BA, that administers the Yellow Fever Vaccine, free of charge. The hours are specific, but its free and the vaccine lasts 10 years, so I was down to get it. I didn´t know what to expect, so we took the train (this time we asked no one, and just went by the map), and we found it easily enough. The name of the place was something having to do with the sanitation of their borders (I was translating), so I guess they are so adamant about people not bringing diseases that they give anyone free shots. The whole thing took all of 5 minutes...I ... read more

After a long flight from Houston, we arrived in Buenos Aires, surprisingly, ready to see the sights. Unfortunately, they were not ready for us to see them. Three museums attempted, and three museums closed. January, it seems, is a poor time to visit for tourists as all the locals are on holiday, closing many of the attractions. Our hostel in San Telmo, the Telmotango, was very nice. Clean and neat, we had a two story room with two single beds on the upper floor and a double on the lower floor for Sara and me. Cabinets were present in the room for locking up our 100lbs of gear, and we decided the staff was trustworthy. After finding that so much of the town was shut down, and feeling that our lungs were quickly clogging with ... read more

Food: The undeniable Italian influence makes pizzas, pastas, and gelato as prevelant as pigeons in Union Square Park. But I had to try the steak, as Argentine beef is why some people visit. We picked a chic Italian restaurant that gives complimentary champagne with the bread basket. Nicole´s pasta was good, but my steak was tough and fatty. Not to be dettered, I will be trying the beef from the parilla (grill) which can be served at local greasy spoons designed for this purpose. We did find out about an Arabic restaurant and the thought of falafel made our mouths water. (sandwich and soda, $1) Mainly we´ve had plenty of salads, a few pizzas, some pasta, and plenty of crossaints or whatever accompanies all the cups of coffee people drink here. There´s even a pastry ... read more
