Friday 20th April 2012: We left the Suez Canal yesterday evening and on our first day in the cooler water of the Med, we’ve seen the first dolphins we’ve spotted for quite a while. Unfortunately when you’re 8 floors above the water, they look small through a camera’s view finder so we still don’t have any great photos of them but at least we’re back in their territory. We also got a good view of Crete in the late afternoon but quite frankly neither of us could bother getting up to get the camera so no photo of that either! Our clocks went forward an hour last night so we had a late start to our day which left us little time to kill before this morning’s lecture. This was Richard Farleigh again and ... read more

Odessa to Athens Odessa was very cold. I think someone said it was in the low thirties. Luckily, we had decided to go to the ballet, so we were not too cold even though the building was not very warm. The ballet was really very good and we enjoyed it. The city itself is about one step up from Constanta, Romania. The Potemkin steps are quite a sight as an entrance to the city from the port. The buildings are beautiful, but need cleaning and some repair. However, it is wealthier than Constanta although both are large sea ports on the Black Sea. Odessa is larger. From there we cruised through the Dardanelles, a beautiful, narrow strait leading to the Bosporus and past Istanbul, in the daylight. We then reentered the Mediterranean Sea and headed to ... read more

All of yesterday and today has been spent at sea so I've had lots of time for splashing in my paddling pool, going in the playroom and eating nice food. Mummy and daddy even let me try ice-cream! I liked it but preferred ice-cubes. Its been a nice couple of days. We've had lots of islands and boats to look at and the sun has been out both days which has been awesome. Today has been the last day on the cruise, so tonight I had to say goodbye to Quirino, my favourite waiter, and to the people that sat next to us every night. Tomorrow we will be docking at Istanbul Turkey.... read more

Today is September the 11th. On board right now we have over 1000 American guests. We carry several american news networks on our onboard TV channels, all of which are doing memorials for the World Trade Centre. I remember where I was, at school in the reception area. Where were you? 9/11 Dont ever forget.... read more

This morning was a comparatively early rising day at 7:30 AM (even after adjusting the clocks ahead last night). We think that would make it 3:30 in the morning for any sleepy heads back in St Louis. Today‘s schedule is similar to the past few days – eat a lot, visit some entertainment spots, and generally relax all day. It may be starting to sound boring to you, but it is very restful for us. Soon we will begin the excursions at different places and the stories should become more interesting again. Rather than tell you eah thing we did do today, maybe it would be better to tell you about some of the things we did not do. There are many venues which we have not mentioned because we either were not interested or did ... read more

Our day began with a room service breakfast consumed on the veranda. Although outside looked cold, it was just the humidity that blanketed us in fog for the whole day. Seas were mostly mild with some slight rolling noticeable at times. Impressively, food arrived hot. After breakfast, Sharon rushed off to mass, and I completed the blog from yesterday. Then it was off to the first of two bingo sessions for the day. The Win-A-Cruise session that we missed the day before had to be rescheduled due to technical difficulties. That’s cruise-director-speak for saying that when the limit of 46 numbers for the bonus was reached, the wrong button was pushed, and the game was reset. People were not happy because not many people had attended and there was suspicion that they wanted more participants. Next ... read more

With this blog I would like to prove that there is much more to do in Majorca than staying at a hotel, roast on the beach during the day (next to the hotel) and spend the night drinking until your liver explodes (at the hotel bar)... Those of you who know us, would know that we don't have lots of money, but we consider ourselves rich in other aspects, such as having a wonderful family or enjoying what we have instead of complaining for what we don't have; but this year we decided to spoil ourselves and rent a sailing boat with some other members of our family for a week, to mix among the brave souls who spend their summers floating on the clear Mediterranean waters around Majorca. And so we arrived at the docks ... read more

Well there isn’t much to talk about as far as onboard life goes. I’m basically finished doing deck work which means no more early mornings spent swabbing the decks. This week I’m working with the deck repairman, he is in charge of finding creative repair solutions for deck equipment, completing hot work (welding, grinding, etc), and checking inspecting things like tanks and structures. On the 31st I’ll be starting work in the engine room, and I have no idea what I’ll be doing. A week later I’ll finally be working on the bridge. When we were in Civitavecchia 4 of us took the train to Rome. We accidentally boarded an Intercity Train instead of a Regional train which caused us to pay 8 euros more than our 9 euro ticket when our tickets got checked. Rome ... read more

Well I have been keeping a notepad to write interesting things in so I have something to talk about. Unfortunately, for the first week after my previous blog not a single interesting thing happened in my life. So I’ll fast forward to the 8th of June. Think about this for a moment; when an anchor comes off the bottom it brings with stuff from the sea. This normally ends up being clay, mud, and of course; water. So to deal with this, the bottom of the chain locker is perforated to allow all these things to drop clear of the chain. From time to time this space needs to be cleaned. A small hatch is the only entry into this god forsaken space. 20 inches tall, full of girders and spaces hardly large enough to fit ... read more

Hi everyone, Last full day on our fantastic cruise - arrive in Barcelona tomorrow morning at 5am and can disembark anytime from 5.30 - 9am. Looks like an early morning for all of us - at least we're independent and don't have to have bags ready for pick up by 10pm tonight. We've been at sea yesterday and today and the day before that we spent at Iraklion (Crete) - what a great place for a holiday - we both absolutely loved it. We had the best time and will go back there again thats for sure! We had a great taxi driver which cost us $EU30 to go see more historical rocks and yet the cruise recommended a tour which would have cost us around $EU180 each!! All the taxis here are the latest Mercededs!! ... read more
