It has been officially 1 month since I have been in Sydney, Au and at the first week it seemed like I've been here forever and now it seems like last week I just arrived. So much for getting a consistent job, so much for getting a flat, and so much for saving mony. Being as I am a planner knowing everything I will be doing from the time I get up to the time I go to sleep, it's been crazy how plans, expectations, and ideas change daily. At first I wanted to base myself in Sydney living as a local and traveling a bit. People that I have met and the things that I've already experienced have all changed my way of thinking. Our latest plan was to hire a camper van and ... read more

We’ve done five dives now; one was called off because of rough seas. The first was a wreck called the Mataora, outside Avarua harbour. The wreck was broken up, and in places was little more than a pile of twisted metal. We didn’t see heaps of fish, but it was a good and interesting dive. The water was reasonably warm (24C) and visibility was good. We saw angel fish, damsel fish, some big lionfish, cod, crown of thorns, triggerfish, rainbow wrasse, threadfin butterfly fish, anemone fish, clownfish, checkerboard wrasse, blue spotted grouper and trumpet fish. The coral around the wreck was very plain, but appeared to be alive. We hung around town (Avarua), having lunch at Trader Jacks, waiting for the second dive, only to be told that it had been called off due to rough ... read more

London to Rarotonga in one go is a long flight. We stopped for a few hours in LA, what a hassle! We had to go through customs and passport control just to get to the transit lounge. Mind you, it wasn’t really a transit lounge, we did kind of enter the US and then leave again, we could have taken off into the night if we’d wanted to. Next stop was Papeete; we always seem to stop in Tahiti to change planes, never to visit. Finally we made it to Rarotonga, landing early Sunday morning. We were met in a van and were out at the hostel (Backpackers International Hostel, West Coast, reasonable discount for staying longer than a week, basic but friendly) by 8am. Even at that time it was hot and humid. We went ... read more

As I came into the city on the bus this morning, all I thought of was this day -- 2 years ago. September 11. A day the whole world remembers. A day, that for a moment, the whole world stopped. It's intriguing to get the Australian perspective of the US at a time when terrorism is the new wave in crime. While 9/11 is a sad day for the US, October 12 is a sad day for Australia. October 12 marks one year since the bombings in Bali took place. 88 Aussies died in Bali while on "holiday". That day Australians realized that they were no longer "safe" from the terrorist activities occurring in the rest of the world. As the paper said today, "Due to Australia's "lucky" location it seems as though - like the ... read more

Not knowing where you are or how to get somewhere or what street leads to where, a.k.a-you're lost!! I guess being lost in Sydney isn't such a bad thing considering I ended up on the steps of the famous Sydney Opera House. Today I was suppose to have a "trial" at a cafe, which is like training on a first day of work. I knew how to get there from the bus stop but that wasn't where I was coming from today. Instead, I was in the botanical gardens and I left everyone to walk to the cafe. "Sure, no problem-just walk towards the water!" Needless to say, I walked several miles, took 2 taxis', and asked for directions several times and still did not arrive at my destination. It also didn't help that the ... read more

Saturday, 23 August 2003 Slept well last night, woke up around seven o'clock. I'm still in Temora, as I will be until next Friday when I hope to complete a successful week working in a centre here in town. I didn't want to waste the day, so decided to travel via back roads to Glenfell some one hundred kilometres north east of Temora. It was around ten-thirty when I started the car and drove out of town along the Young Road. Not far along the way I came across a sign indicating Glenfell. This road past very flat farming country, sheep grazed contently as I passed. I was particularly surprised to see the flocks of birds feasting on new seeds that grew on the side of the road. I followed more signs to eventually arrive at ... read more

Right-di-ho, here we go!

Bula and Kava- the 2 works you must know when traveling to the islands of fiji!! Everywhere you go, the Fijians shout "Bula" including the McDonalds welcome sign. Thus, bula means welcome! Now, kava is made from the roots of the kava tree, which are crushed up and mixed with water. It appears as dirty water and actually taste the same as it looks. Though when drinking don't shout out "that's awful" like i did! When drinking kava, you sit in a circle and the "cheif" dips half of a coconut shell into the bowl of Kava and passes it to you. Before receiving the shell of Kava, you clap once and yell "Bula", then you drink and clap 3 times once finished. Drinking too much could cause your body to become numb-don't worry we ... read more
