Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch July 31st 2004

Well what can I say.. a great trip comes to an end... New Zealand's South Island is one of superior beauty. We flew into Christchurch on the 24/7. After a few troubles at airport security (surprise surprise) we went to the car hire section. As it turns out they had stuffed up our booking. They had given us 2 cars that had not been skiierised, even though they knew we were driving to Queenstown to ski. So after reorganising, that took us just as long as it did to fly form Sydney to Christchurch, we were under way with our 6 hour drive at 7pm. We drove in complete darkness the whole way, which we would later find out was a tremendous shame. We arrived at Queenstown and checked into our hotel. Rohan, Az and I ... read more

WOW!

It was an early 6 o'clock in the morning start from Queenstown and when my alarm went off I could not remember why - possibly because of the whole tea-pot I drank last night without any help or the few hours sleep I had recieved but after a few minutes I came too and remembered that I was taking the most scenic tour in New Zealand to the Milford Sound I have since learned that Milford is actually a fiord (glacier carved then sea flooded) rather than a 'sound' (river carved then sea flooded) In preperation for the long winding roads to one of the most remote areas in the country and the 3hr boat cruise I took one of handy travel-sick pills - I am now blaming this substance on the reason why I missed ... read more

It was an 8am start on the ski shuttle to the 'Remarkables' ski area - apparently in the summer months they filmed some scenes for LOTR here. This mountain range is one of the few that runs North-South. It was a little cloudy but the journey up the hill gave me a perfect view of Queenstown and the surrounding area. The Remarkables ski area is the highest in altitude in the region and after 13,5km of winding twisting steep and at times very scary paths in the big bus I was glad to get my feet on steady ground / snow. But almost immediately I was carried in wave of people onto a less stable surface! As a novice skier and a snow virgin I am not accustomed too the ski/board jargon - what the heck is ... read more

I spent the morning recovering from the party the night before.  We had all gone out to the Red Rock to meet up with other Kiwi Experience passengers and drivers past and present.  Queenstown is normally the point in the trip where people split up and do their own thing or carry on with the tour so we were promissed a party - which is exactly what we got!!  A few of us braved the cold in order to experience the Minus 5 bar, where everything is made of ice including the glasses.  The half hour in the bar wearing thick 'parka' style jackets and furry booties and drinking cocktails was great fun, the maximum time you are aloud to stay is half an hour, but my warm scottish blood could easily have lasted another 30min. When ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria July 27th 2004

Tuesday, 27 July 2004 I spent the first two days of this week working in Scoresby. It was a Day Care Centre. Three rooms with as you can guess, lots of children. On both days I had to swap from room to room to photograph children as they became available. Ten spools of exposed film went back to the studio on both days. When todays session was finished I drove to Glenrowan. Ned Kelly was a bushranger who roamed the local hills in the 1800's. His career ended in a dramatic shoot out, unfortunately in an effort to end the stand-off the Jones's Glenrowan Inn was burnt to the ground by the troopers. Only a sign indicating the historical event can now be viewed. It was mid afternoon when I arrived and after booking into the ... read more

The first stop of the morning between Wanaka and Queenstown was at puzzling world Well this certainly mucked up my head first thing in the morning. The holograms were pretty smart but the hall of moving faces freaked me out. It is based on the Mona Lisa moving eyes type trick. The next room looked normal from the outside but actualy played tricks with sizes for anyone looking in while there were people inside. This is the same simple technology they used in the Lord of the Rings films to make the hobbits look small. However it was the last room that made me feel dizzy and basically under the influence in a pretty major way. Firstly I walked into a mirror that I thought was another room. Then I had the sensation that I was ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth July 26th 2004

Perth, Western Australia 26th July 2004 - 5th August 2004 My first encounter in a western country occurred some 5 years back. S and I had just completed our Year 2 in the University and decided it was time to reward ourselves with a trip to Australia. I still remembered vividly that in order to cut costs, we took a Malaysia Airline flight to Kuala Lumpur before flying south to Perth. At $692, the price of the air ticket was not cheap in today’s standards considering that Tiger Airways and Jetstar are now offering direct flights to the same destination @ rock bottom prices. However, in those days when the Sin-Perth route were dominated by Qantas and Singapore Airlines, $692 was already a bargain. The advent of budget carriers had certainly made traveling much more affordable ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Glaciers July 24th 2004

Due to yet another fabulous kayaking trip yesterday I was unable to get to the glacier-guides office before it closed, nobody else had signed up for the helicpter/glacier hike so I did not have a clue about when I was going or what to take with me. I figured the best plan was to get up with everyone else who was doing a whole day glacier trek, pack my lunch and wear lots of layers. I hurried along to the office in town for an early start (still dark) 7.30am only to be told that in winter the first helicpter leaves @ 11am. Thinking about it now - it does not seem logical to go on a scenic helicopter ride in the dark or on a glacier hike while it is -15 degrees!! A little peeved ... read more

Well I have spent 2weeks exploring the north island and have had an excellent time - in some ways I don't want to leave here - met loads of cool people, been to loads of exciting places and have taken part in great activities, been ferried around by a fab driver, Royal and generally had a good time. In the south Island I have got cold weather, sand flies and a 3hr ferry ride amongst other things to look forward to. Anyway it has to be done - sure I will have a good time in the South aswell, I can wrap up warm, wear insect repellant and take take a few sea-legs pills and hope for the best on the ferry-ride..... I have heard quite bad reports about the Wellington to Picton ferry. Between the ... read more

It seems like yesterday since I took off and left this beautiful country and my dear friends there. In fact I left a home behind... Oh by the way I know by now that in Australia u don't fall off the earth and that you dont even notice that youre living a life headfirst. And I know now that you dont instantly get bitten by venomous spiders and snakes once you step off the plane :D haha These pictures all each tell their own stories and are dedicated to those beautiful times we had together. I'll be back! FOR REAL!! :-)... read more
