We got here! Arrived very early in the morning into Cairns international airport today. Got in around 5.30 after the 3650 mile journey from Tokyo which in turn was 6220 miles from London. Kate found suspicion with the quarantine people after the cutest dog in the world put its little paw on her luggage. Clearly she had some kind of illicit fruit!! Seemingly the little dog was in for a bit of a kicking after it turned out she had nothing on her at all (though later we did discover an empty KitKat wrapper so maybe it was on to something!) and we walked out into a very dark Friday morning in Cairns. In due time, we arrived at the Calypso Inn, to be our home for the next few days. In their own words they ... read more

Sunday, 19 June My job for the next week was in the central NSW town of Temora. I waited until 9 am before starting what turned out to be a five hundred and forty kilometre journey. It took about three hours before I crossed into New South Wales, near the towns of Albury and Wodonga. I left the Hume Freeway twenty five kilometres out of Albury and joined the Olympic Highway and drove north towards the town of Culcairn. The weather was overcast but it only rained a few times as the road took me through the towns of Henty and The Rock. Near Wagga the road by passes the township and I was on the last eighty kilometres into Temora. I had pre booked my accommodation at the Goldtera Motor Inn. I know the proprietor ... read more

Well only an hour to go before I leave for Auckland and spend the weekend with rellies before flying out to Hong Kong on Monday. Getting a little aprehensive at the thought of going all the way across Asia and hopefully finish up in the UK. This is a trip I have always wanted to do, but I'm sorry I have to do it without Jan who didn't want to go to Asia. My rucksack is all packed so all systems are go! Shame to leave this sort of sunset in Katikati New Zealand behind.... read more

PNG- News # 14: Sargent Major fish frenzy (June 12, 2004) Sitting on a dock outside of Finschhafen wasting time. Four Canadians trying to get to Tami Islands. Patrick drops a Lae Biscuit cracker into the sea and a dozen fist sized sargent majors swim every which way. It is difficult to watch as the sea motion from Sunday night’s sixteen hour boat trip is still present. One successful stripped sargent major poses with his catch - a large piece of cracker in his mouth. Its Tuesday, no market today. No boats. We walk to the local high school Dregerhafen Regional for tourist advice. Lucy, an English teacher with a spare block adopts us. Her husband Jason, an unemployed TV repairman comes from the small island and becomes our personal guide. Telling us the history of ... read more

My first trip to Australia was quite the unexpected adventure. I had just met a friend who also typically traveled on United. Well a week later e-fares come out and has NYC-SYD for $700.74. I couldn’t believe it. I had never seen this fare for anything under $1000. So even though I had a trip planned for this time period to Southern California for the Yankees road trip I decided this was too good of an offer to let it go. And with that another week or so and I was off. I was so happy and excited to finally be going to Australia that I left the office early and got to the airport in time to jump aboard the flight before hand. This gave me a three plus hour layover in LAX and the ... read more

I've just left Perth on the Indian Pacific after spending a week there. I havn't done that much in Perth apart from the cinema and drinking coffee. I havn't been able to drink due to the antiboitics after having my head kicked in, in Copper Pedy. I'm destinded for Adelaide. Perth is a beautiful city. Its the only ciy I have been to so far and that when I look back, I feel slightly home sick. The people are fantastic and the city is set out extremely well. Two days ago I went to the meausum to try and broaden my mind. I didn't find it that interesting but I did like this quote I read. "A city isn't a concrete Forrest, Its a human Zoo". 10/06/04 Well, I'm in starbucks. The train journy actually turned ... read more

Fifty kilometers to the north of Coober Pedy witches hats of white dirt, 20 feet tall begin to apear on the windswept plain. They are the mullock heaps, earth disgarded from the mine shaft beside each one, every gram checked for colour, opal. No humans to see, what few there are 30 feet down carefully chipping a drive forward or sorting spoil in the adjacent hut on wheels, before all that isn't opal, joins the mullock heap's pointy top through a dinosaur neck extractor. Alice Springs is 700km behind and Adelaide 700  father south   as the Sturt Highway nears Coober Pedy. Those first Mullock heaps have by now coalesed into ranges with odd outliers at spots where the effort of digging outweighed the value of opal found. Suddenly the town, in a gully. One minute cold(its winter) and windy saltbush, saltbush and mullock heaps to the horison ... read more
