We went from Christchurch down to Dunedin and the Otago peninsular. Dunedin is a nice city, lots of old buildings. The Otago peninsular is rural - lots of wildlife. We saw some blue penguins in Omaru - the peguins stay in the Sea all day and then return to land when it gets dark every evening. They return in groups, get out of the water, stand around to dry and then walk to their nests. The baby penguins sometimes come out of the next and start shouting for food. Then we went down to the Catlins. This is the bottom of the South Island. Very isolated and beautiful. From there we went to Fiorland, we stayed in Te Anau. This is is very scenic, with mountains almost to the water. We went on a couple of ... read more

I have had a most enjoyable visit with the Unitarians in Wellington - one day of driving about the city looking down from various high spots around the city, chauffered by Yvonne, and another visit out to the suburb of Marana to the home of Ed, Samantha and Hunter and their two dogs Sparky (shephard cross) and Dakota ( tawny mixed breed). For any of you who don't know what Unitarianism is all about, here is a link to a fairly comprehensive description available on Wikipedia : Unitarianism Explained Oh! And there is also a website that I didn't know about until today, for the Australasian Unitarians and here it is Unitarians Down Under Unitarians don't think that proselytizing is a good idea, so don't worry, no one is trying to convert anyone here, by any ... read more

My trip then continued on to the Sounds and I opted to go to the harder to reach Doubtful Sound and it was totally worthwhile. Kanaka (boyfriend from wellington) and I went on an overnight boat cruise which gave us the chance to see the stunning area with just a small group. Despite the pouring rain we went fishing (someone caught a shark!), pulled up lobster pots, played cards, ate crayfish and venison and bonded with the group over a few bottles of wine. The highlight for me was having a pod of dolphins perform acrobats alongside the boat and looking at the hundreds of waterfalls cascading around us. There was a wee stove in the boat that I snuggled up against for much of the trip as it reached freezing temperatures outside (this was in ... read more

We had never heard of paua before moving to New Zealand. Penguins do not live in the northern hemisphere. Both live in the Pacific waters off the coast of Oamaru. After splurging on muffins and drinks at the local grocery, we searched for a spot along the water where we could catch the early morning sun. While cruising around, we noticed signs pointing towards a “Blue Penguin Colony”. The blue penguin (Eudyptula Minor), as we later learned, is the world’s smallest penguin measuring just 25cm tall and weighing only 1 kg. They are attracted to this area because of the relatively warm shallow waters that range between 25 and 70 meters deep. To our delighted surprise, we arrived at a seaward-facing amphitheater used to seat ticket holders for evening viewings of the blue penguins as they ... read more

We had a great Christmas & New Year in New Zealand, although we particularly missed home and you all that week. We started off our festive activities in Hastings Hall Hotel in Auckland, a lovely boutique B&B, arriving late on Christmas Eve after our very delayed flight. We managed to stay awake long enough to drink the bottle of wine mum and dad had kindly arranged to be in our room (Thank you!). We borrowed Malcolm's (the owner of Hastings Hall) family for Christmas Day and had Christmas Dinner - a fantastic buffet - with him, his sisters, their partners & children! Had a swim in the pool and watched Harry Potter and felt the least Christmassy we had ever felt! After a couple of very relaxing days there, we caught a ferry from Auckland to ... read more

The most remarkable thing about New Zealand is the simply breathtaking scenary that exists almost everywhere in the country. I thought that on only my first full day there when i went out on a boat in the Bay of Islands, the scenary there is so stunning i don't believe any words i could use could do justice to it. WE also saw Cape Reinga, which is the northernmost point of New Zealand and the scenary there is brilliant and is a place where one can see three different coasts all at once and again its amazing scenary. Also up there are the giant sand dunes, which have to be seen to be believed. If anything the scenary of South island is even more impressive, we have done a number of drives through south island and ... read more

I woke up in the middle of the night with my sandfly bites itching like crazy. I put on my antihistamine cream and decided to take a Benadryl tablet to see if it would help. I slept the rest of the night and the swelling had gone down considerably by morning, but the bites still itched. I showered and put on more cream. The raw blister on my heel is still very sore and now I have what feels like an ingrown toenail. I never have these problems when I get regular pedicures and I was missing my nail lady. All of this is on my right foot. I worked on my toenail a little and put some antibiotic cream with a Band-Aid on my heel. It was another rainy day and there isn’t much to ... read more

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a decent New Years. I spend New Years on the beach in Paihai, watching fireworks with Michaela and Geshe. For those of you who have experienced the debautchery of the Niagara Grape and Wine festival, I must say that sadly Paihai is about 100 times worse. Every other person was holding up someone else, and the police, they were out in force. I wouldn't have wanted to be a police officer for sure! They set up big holding tanks for the people who get into trouble, drink underage, or get into fights. I had a more peaceful night then most I would say. I was in bed by 2am! Sad but true, I am starting to feel my age. I caught myself looking at these younger people and ... read more

We've signed up for something called the Magic Bus to get around the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Departing from Auckland, our first stop was Rotorua - an inland town known for its Maori population and natural thermal activity. The city is aptly nicknamed "Sulphur City," but it turned out to be a really nice spot to celebrate the New Year. On the way to Rotorua, we stopped at the Waitomo Caves, where we donned wetsuits and ventured into the caves for what they call "Black Water Rafting" on innertubes. The caves are covered in glowworms, insect larvae that literally glow in order to attract food. When the flashlights are off and everything is quiet, the caves are truly stunning, and the slide down the... read more
