We get up, have breakfast in our room and walk down to the bus stop with all our baggage. It is a nice day with beautiful scenery around the roadway between the mountains and the sea. The beaches in this area are all grey river rock, not sand. As we drive toward Picton, the landscape has changed from the lush green hills a few months ago to a brilliant summer gold color. We drive into the Awatere Valley where the Marlborough wine country begins and past several vineyards before we reach Picton. We are dropped off at the ferry terminal, check our bags and board the ferry for Wellington. I am glad we have nice weather because we are aware that the four-hour ferry crossing can be miserable if the sea swells are high. We have ... read more

Got coach up here on sun 8th before staring 'work' the next day. Was a pretty cool and scenic trip - not even the Megabus has a commentary from a shorts and long sock wearing driver called Derek and makes a stop at the 'Swinging Cow Cafe'! Whangarei is the biggest town around but still pretty small. So far we have visited a couple of bars (inc Frings Brewhouse) and cafes. Also found the $2 store which beats the 99p store in Camden both on price (15p cheaper!) and the lack of people having punchups inside. Everyone in the hospital seems friendly and knows each other, have managed to do some work inc a resus.... The accomodation is 'characterful' but only a 3 min walk from work and the hospital swimming pool - more updates on ... read more

Elaine and i have now been joined by another friend, Emily, and for her this is her third time in New Zealand and i think that for her this is her favourite place. What has been most notable since she joined us though is the amount of moving about we have done. As i write these words we are due to stay in our eighth different hostel in as many nights, something that seems quite bizarre, but given that we want to see as much of NZ as we can it seems appropriate. Now though we plan to stay in Queenstown for almost a week and then go to Dunedin for a few days after this so the huge amount of moving about has now ended. Since Emily joined us we have had some more cool ... read more

As well as art deco architecture another thing that Napier is famous for is wine. Napier is in Hawkes Bay, a famous wine growing region. Not wanting to let all this wine pass us by we decided to have a day touring the wineries! Luckily for me Tim decided to drive (we decided against going on one of the tours as they seemed expensive when all you got was the transport. We thought this way we could save the money and buy lots of wine!) There are lots of wineries to choose from so for no good reason we decided to start at Mission Estate Winery which is the oldest winery in New Zealand. We got a free tour which told us the history of the winery. It was set up by a group of French ... read more

We get up, get ready and take off for the Kaikoura Peninsula Walk. We hike along the seaside road about one hour when we arrive at the seal colony. The seals are pretty far out in the water on the rocks. We climb up the hill to the Clifftop Walk and walk around the point of the peninsula. We then drop down into the village at South Bay before crossing over the hill back to Kaikoura. The entire walk takes us about three hours. Since I want to get laundry done before we get to a hotel in Wellington, I stay at the motel and Michael walks down to town to get take-away for our lunch. By the time our laundry is done, it is time to walk to the Whale Watching Center to check-in for ... read more

Heading North from Dunedin towards Christchurch - theres just time to stop off and see some silly boulders in the sand at MOERAKI and a few yellow eyed penguins at OAMARU. Its our last NZ sunset we fly to FIJI tomorrow!... read more

Days 55 & 56 We jumped back on the bus in the morning headed for Rotoura. We stopped for a walk at the Karangake Scenic Reserve where we walked through a km long tunnel which was pitch black!! We arrived in Rotorua mid afternoon where we were greeted by the stench of the sulphur (Rotorua is famous for it's guesers and mud pools which stink but are cool to see). We went for a wander and had a drink at the hostel bar. We cooked dinner, went to a rubbish fayre and chilled out back at the hostel. The next day we went to the Agrodome, where they have some cool activities. We first did a swoop (where you're put into sleeping bag things and hoisted up 45m on a crane). Stuart pulled the rip cord ... read more

Just noticed Rob hasn't written anything for a while so I get to do an entry for once! Flight from Singapore was good - met nice camp steward called Craig who kept calling me sweetie! Food was good, wine was good - they kept wandering up and down the aisles with a selection and giving top ups. Watched Just like Heaven or whatever its called, quite a good movie if not fairly predicatble.. Landed in Auckland bought midday and illegally smuggled in some milky bar butttons. They are tight on 'bioprotection' here and u are meant to declare all food u have with u. They even xray all bags at customs! Stayed in Auckland overnight in very posh hotel (crowne plaza) with sony widescreen TV and bar area in room. The breakfast was also fab. there ... read more

Hello! I have decided to keep a weekly travel journal on this trip so you can read what I have been up to. Hope you enjoy reading it (but feel free to ignore it completely if you can't be bothered!) I have arrived in New Zealand after the longest flight in the world. It was well over 30 hours via Los Angeles and then via Hawaii after we left Los Angeles to deliver a passenger there who had a severe medical condition which needed attention halfway to New Zealand. Poor Jessie had waited five hours for me at the airport. I'm now in Auckland which was beautifully sunny today and I did the coast to coast walk with Jessie following such a badly signposted path that we were amazed to emerge at the end successfully. It ... read more

Hot springs and hills 4-5/12/05 We rode away from the hostel and headed for the ferry back to the mainland, the hills didn't seem as bad on the way back and the mile downhill to the port was great. We rolled the bikes onto the ferry, expecting the same comedy routine (carrying them fully laden down four steps and over two door sills) as we'd had on the way to Waiheke. Amazingly we were loaded straight onto the back of the boat and only had our fellow passengers to negotiate. The ride out of Auckland took ages, the place goes on for miles and miles, but eventually we left the buildings behind and pedalled out into the countryside. Just after Point Chevalier we met a guy pushing a 36" unicycle down a steep slope, he was ... read more
