Well, before I set off into the wide blue yonder again, I thought I'd better put a few photos on.... Christmas was very nice on Great Barrier Island. Just a few people on the campsite and friendly locals to make it even more special. Met up with Mum and Dad on Dec 29th in Auckland (tearfully at the airport!) and we spent time out on the coast (black sand beaches etc) and then headed on down to Rotorua, Taupo, Napier and Wellington. The thermal areas and the buried village were really interesting - we did spend nearly an hour waiting for the big geyser to 'go' only to discover that it had been going all along! I think they got the ferry across to Picton OK this morning.... So I'm off to the car auction tomorrow ... read more

I spent a wonderful New Year's Day at this place: Karori Bird Sanctuary The website does a thorough job of describing the programmes and the bird species. The Karori Sanctuary is only a 15 minute walk from Erin's flat. It was opened to the public in 2001, and covers 252 hectares. It is now a safe haven for rare native birds such as the kiwi. That and other species were reintroduced after all pests and predators had been removed from the valley. The entire area is surrounded by a copyrighted fence, researched to keep predators such as possums and stoats (a weasel-like animal) out. I had anticipated that it would be a quiet place on New Year's Day. Wrong!!! The main paved paths were crowded with families and strollers and senior citizens and teenagers and folks ... read more

Took off to Queenstown with Chris on 30th Dec to camp over before watching the 1st One Day International against Sri Lanka on New Years eve. The pictures speak for themselves - as does the name of the mountain range - the "Remarkables." Campsite was basic but views spectacular too. We set up camp in a little secluded spot in the trees then realised that the water's edge was the place to be, so had to move the tent. Why bother dismantling it after all the hard work! After the cricket Chris & I joined Ange (Andrew/Belinda, Mark & Katie) at the lodge after travelling 30K on a dirt track and hiking over a bridge and across a river with all our food and clothes etc. Hiked up Rob Roy Glacier on New Years day. Pictures ... read more

Bonnie Tyler is singing 'Total Eclipse of the heart' - just a point of trivia, no hidden meaning... Christchurch. Very nice. What I have seen. Comfortable and relaxed city, nice city spaces, one way streets to confuse you, arcades and malls abound and a crew of people from India filming for a movie or advert in the spacious, lazy, Cathedral Square, not far from where people are playing chess with oversized pieces, a small audience gathered, a 50 something guy with white shirt and panama hat playing a Maori guy in tracksuit pants and oversized jacket. Travellers abound. Europeans, English, Japanese, Korean and American/Canadians - apologies especially to the Canadians, because I don't know how to differentiate the accents. The only Australian I can be sure of was a Graphic Designer from Melbourne, in Wellington, whom ... read more

Being that this will be my last post from New Zealand I will dispense random thoughts regarding our latest journey into the Abel Tasman National park as well as the Kiwi culture with primary focus on the south island. To begin, I was extremely disappointed with myself and my inability to write about any intriguing observations I noticed in Queenstown. The reason for this is that I really hadn't let it all sink in at the point when I posted the last blog. In fact I hadn't even left Queenstown before I was trying to sum it all up. My apologies for that, but after 2 day long bus rides and 1 flight to the North Island, I've had some time to think about this Country and everything I think encapsulates it. The pictures that are ... read more

We are in Wellington at the moment and it SO windy. We arrived on Monday by ferry and the crossing was very smooth which was surprising as when we left Kaikoura it was raining and very windy and the car was buffeted the whole way. We did read in the paper on Tuesday that there had been hurricane winds all over NZ with lots of forest fires is some regions and over 170mm of rain in 24hrs in others. For once it was not raining on us! Yesterday we explored the city. It is a great city and we both really liked it although it was very quiet. There was hardly any traffic at all. We started out our tour by getting the cable car (it is really a funicular) to the botanical gardens. We walked ... read more

After our night in Nelson it was back on the bus again - this time to Picton where we met up with some more of the girls, Joanne (another brit) and Delis (a kiwi), and got a boat over to Furneaux lodge in the Marlborough Sounds... home for the next 3 nights. We'd chosen to spend New Years here for a number of reasons... we wanted to be near the sea but away from the hussle of a big town or city (well, big by NZ standards), it's a beautiful spot, it was in the right direction back to Welly... oh and there was a live band playing for NYE!! We had a tiny bit of blagging to do when we arrived at Furneaux lodge..... Joanne and Aileen were late additions to the trip and by ... read more

We get up and it is overcast but not raining. Michael is excited that we are about a block away from the Starbucks and throws on some clothes to go get his coffee. I get on the Internet in our room and look at accommodations for the remainder of the trip. When Michael comes back I get in the shower and he gets on the Internet to check and send some e-mails. When we both get cleaned up we go out for lunch and to the bus station to make arrangements for the balance of our trip. As we leave to walk back to our room it is sprinkling. Back in our room we get on the Internet to make the rest of our accommodations and transport for the trip. Finally, we make all of the ... read more

Rotorua is kind of the Queenstown of North Island except with the constant smell of bad eggs. It must be a little disconcerting to live in a place where every hundred meters or so there's a big hole in the ground with steam pouring out. Still we reckoned we'd risk 5 days or so. After a chill out day and a trip to the cinema we began our warm up with a bit of mountain biking on some really nice custom built mountain bike trails in some woods just outside the town. The next day we ventured a little further to visit the Wai-O-Tapu "thermal wonderland" and saw guess what - more steaming holes in the ground. There were also various coloured pools with names like "The artists pallette" and the "Rainbow Crater" which was perhaps ... read more

today is the best day ever!! (melissa's already gone and i'm catching up on blogs....so today isn't really the best day ever but i'm going to pretend she's still here) today we arrived in windy welly via the 3 hour ferry ride. it was uneventful (I WAS BORED AND BOTHERING CAITLIN THE WHOLE TIME) but beautiful. we arrived in wellington and decided that it was too much of a hassle to figure out which bus to take to our hostel....so we walked. (IT DIDN'T LOOK TO FAR ON THE MAP....) it was hot and long and very uphill, but i'm no rower so i wouldn't know what real hard work is (HEY NOW!!). WE WERE SWEATY ANYWAY SO WE DECIDED TO VENTURE BACK INTO THE CITY TO FERG'S KAYAKS (aislyn's lovely suggestion) TO RENT ROLLERBLADES. as ... read more
