This morning we drove out to the start of the 'Rob Roy' track. The drive was on very bumpy unsealed roads, culminating in a '4WD recommended' section. However after being passed by 2 other camper vans we decided to contine. Eventually we got to the start of the walking track. We followed the track, climbing for about 2 hours before being rewarded with spectacular views of the Rob Roy glacier... An excellent spot for a picnic. Approaching the glacier, we could hear the rumblings of an avalanche - we were saftely on the other side of the valley.... read more

Happy New Year from sunny New Zealand! Hope you all have a great 2006 with lots of fun and adventures! Well I left Australia behind and have just spent 10 days in the north island of New Zealand. I met up with my Dad in Auckland and it is nice to have some company for the next month. Auckland was a bit wet but since then the weather has been glorious! Enjoyed a nice meal in the revolving restaurant of the sky tower in Auckland, went on a hole in the rock cruise in the Bay of Islands and spent Christmas in Rotorua. Christmas Day was lovely we went on a cable car, did a luge ride, patted baby lion cubs at Paradise Valley and went to a Polynisian thermal Spa! Boxing Day we went out ... read more

New Year’s weekend offered us four more days to see the countryside of NZ. This time we were on our own as we loaded our gear into the Pathfinder…er, Honda … and set off. Heading in a southeast direction on Route 1, we passed a myriad of the Canterbury region wineries. It wasn’t long into our journey when the car started to let out an obnoxious “BEEP BEEP”. Alarmed, we pulled over at the next petrol station and popped the hood of our 1988 hatchback. A fella approached us as we scratched our heads. After a brief investigation, he grimly informed us that we had obviously been speeding. Lo and behold, our smart car is equipped with a sensor that warns us whenever our traveling speed exceeds 105 kph (65 blazing mphs). We were quite happy ... read more

New Year’s Eve in Franz Josef. I woke up around 5:30 am to go to the bathroom and was somewhat relieved that it was raining so we wouldn’t hike the glacier. Michael woke up about 8:00 am and I told him it was raining when I got up earlier. He said it must have cleared since he could hear helicopters. I looked outside and it was pretty clear except for a few clouds right over the glacier. We looked at each other and I told him he should call to see if there was still room on the trips for the day. When he called, the girl asked him if he had seen the photos at their office and was sure we wanted to make the trip. This didn’t serve to make me more comfortable, but ... read more

Day 48 We arrived in Auckland where we were delighted to see our bags going round on the carosel. We caught the bus into town and got to our hostel where we were told our room wouldn't be ready for another 6 hours!! We tried to sleep in the hostel lounge and luckily after 3 hours, our room was ready. We went back to sleep until mid-afternoon, it took a further two hours to be able to keep our eyes open before we got ready to go out. We walked down to the harbour and had a yummy mexican meal followed by some drinks in a couple of bars. We saw new year in in a funky little bar and pretty much headed back to the sanctuary of our bed just after 12. Considering New Zealand ... read more

Yep, we're in Auckland and we bought a van. It's awesome here, New Zealand is kickass. But first let me recap our last week in Fiji. We left Lautoka and spent a night in Nadi on our way to Mana Island. Our friend Rio from Nananu-i-ra was there so that was cool. She told us that Dangerous Dave was staying down the road, so later that night we go to surprise him at his hostel and see what he's up to. We walked around to the back of the bar and find him in the front of a Fijian conga dance. Typical Dave style. The next day, Dave flew to Auckland and Bryan and I hopped on a 9am boat to Mana. The ride was amazing, it took about 45 minutes to get to the island ... read more

here are some photos of my last few days in picton. all together rather uneventful. i finished up cleaning work and driving work yesterday. all paid up and ready to party....to bring in the new year with style!! well, maybe not so much style, but fun in a city at least!! today i drove from picton to christchurch....it took most of the day. the drive was beautiful. i have come to expect nothing less. i saw a few snow covered peaks descending to black sand beaches. much of the drive i spent on roads carved into moutnain sides looking out onto the water. the roads doubled back and forth around the mountains and through them with scary dark tunnels. i rounded on corner and was looking out onto a small bay....i saw something move above the ... read more

After spending Wednesday recovering from our jet lag and the hamhandedness of Jack Black in King Kong, we spent the next two days exploring the bustling metropolis of Auckland. A city of a little over one million people, or 1/4 of New Zealand's total population, it is pleasant, outdoorsy, multi-cultural, but not overwhelmingly interesting. Kind of like a Southern Hemisphere San Diego. On Thursday, we took a ferry across the bay to Devonport, a quaint village of shops and rich people. We walked to the top of a dormant volcano, which afforded a great view of Auckland and the surrounding areas, including its well-used waterways. After heading into town for fish and chips and a pint, we headed back into the city. Both that night and the next we grabbed dinner at Japanese restaurants. The Asian ... read more

Resan slutar denna gang i "Fox Glacier". Gissa vad den sta'n ar kand for? Har spenderar vi var nyarsafton, och tar under dagen en guidad heldagsvandring uppe pa glaciaren, i det faktiskt fina vadret. Frammat kvallen festar vi till det lite pa campingplatsen, och gar en promenad ... read more
