Resan slutar denna gang i "Fox Glacier". Gissa vad den sta'n ar kand for? Har spenderar vi var nyarsafton, och tar under dagen en guidad heldagsvandring uppe pa glaciaren, i det faktiskt fina vadret. Frammat kvallen festar vi till det lite pa campingplatsen, och gar en promenad ... read more

Having consulted our maps and guides hard we decided to skip most of the South, East, West and North of North Island. Fortunately that leaves us a little bit in the middle. First stop was Tongariro where we walked the "Tongariro Crossing" ( Billed as the best one day walk in New Zealand ). Basically it takes you about 17km past Mount Doom and Mordor with a fair bit of climbing. For full effect we decided to do it in a major hurricane. Sara now rates "Wind" as her greatest fear ( something I had suspected for some time ) just above "Heights", "Walking" and "Volcanoes". To be fair, it was a little scary walking along a couple of the ridges in 70kmph winds and Sara did only sit down and cry once. Otherwise it was ... read more

Day 3: 21.5km, 6 hours, James Mackay - Heaphy Hut Today was almost completely down hill. Heaven. We were back in the forest again but as we descended during the day towards the coast and mouth of the Heaphy River there was a noticeable change in the types of trees and vegetation that we saw, moving from predominately beech at the start of the day towards and increasing number of nikau palms at the end of the day. A few of the girls were starting to get some quite evil blistering and rashes but we still made steady progress. Poor Aileen took a wee tumble at one point which, with a few juicy embellishments, made for a good story later. We crossed lots more swingbridges, stopped for lunch at the Lewis Hut and eventually got ... read more

I was lucky enough to stay with some relations in their holiday home in Queenstown over New Year. My cousin owns a river surfing business which is where crazy adrenaline junkies go down grade 4 rapids with only a body board for protection. Despite deep rooted fears and serious misgivings I was also signed up to go on a Serious Fun River Surfing trip - I was convinced I would probably drown or least need to be rescued at some point in the 2 ½ hour adventure. There was the bonus of some rather good looking guides in wetsuits and I knew that my cousin wouldn’t let me get in too much trouble - after all, it would look really bad for business. You’ll be amazed to read that I did actually manage to surf a ... read more

We woke early, ate breakfast and took our bags to the bus stop. The bus was almost one hour late, which is highly unusual. Since it was supposed to take until after 4 pm to get to Franz Josef if the bus was on time, we were concerned about how late we would be getting there. The bus was packed so Michael and I had to sit totally at the rear. Since most of NZ’s roads twist and turn around mountains we don’t like to sit in the rear as it can make you a little nauseous. Having no choice, we put on the i-Pod and closed our eyes so we didn’t have to watch the scenery as we were swaying back and forth. The bus driver promised to make up as much time as possible ... read more

Once again the best of intentions are crushed mercilessly by the sledgehammer of lazyness. Ah well, its the thought that counts after all and thought is being put in now. It's been almost four weeks since I arrived in North Island and three of those have been spent messing about in Wellington due to circumstances both in and out of my control (aforementioned slackness played a major part here) but they were three happy and well spent weeks and that's all that matters, right....? To clarify, I originally intended to spend some time in Wellington before moving off to explore the key spots of North Island (Taupo, Rotorua, Bay of Islands, Hawkes Bay, etc.), finally arriving in Auckland to fly onwards to Fiji, my next destination. However, things worked out much better in the end. On ... read more

Hi friends! It's been a while, but I am confident that few of you were kept up nights by my online absence. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with loved ones, and that you keep up the fun over the New Year. I've settled in nicely here in Akaroa, spending my days in a rather mundane routine that I am feasting on with the relish of a consistency starved traveller. Monday through Wednesday, I work at the Supply Store which is an anachronistic ye old general store in the age of super-tubs-of-mayonnaise-for-a-dollar bulk shopping. Roger and Coral are pleasant bosses who truly enjoy supplying the town with no more than three of anything you could ever need to eat, drink, fish or do repairs. I work with an interesting cast of characters. First is Roger ... read more

Merry Christmas to you; I hope you all have had a wonderful day giving gifts, receiving presents, stuffing yourself with food and playing with the cardboard boxes. Christmas was just slightly diffeent for me this year, despite the fact i was in Mt Cook National Park. I went to bed late, and loe I woke up on Christmas Day to the sound of hiphop. "So you wanna be me, you bitch" is not the most christmassy of lyrics. No turkey, chocolate money or Mum's gorgeous Xmas cake, no presents to open or give, or Vicar of Dibley to watch on TV. In fact, I only heard the word 'christmas' mentioned 3 times all da. But, I have been treating myself to masses of feel-good food all week: chocolate, chocolate mousses, jelly, mince pies, caramel slices, popcorn, ... read more

Fantastic day .... We reported in early at 'Alpine Guides' for our day glacier hike. A short bus ride and then a scramble over some rocks and we were at the glacier. After strapping on crampons and armed with a spiked walking stick we were ready to face the glacier. Our 2 guides led the way and used ice axes to cut steps in the glacier. We spent over 6 hours on the ice. The views were spectacular.... read more

We wake up and it is a nice day so we decide to walk the 2km to an attraction called Puzzling World and hike a mountain loop across the street. We went by the DOC office and stopped in to see the displays. There wasn’t much of interest at the DOC office so we continued our walk. Puzzling World is a funky attraction with a café that has puzzles on every table and a ceiling like a giant kaleidoscope. The public toilets have a room designed to replicate a Roman-style facility with a diorama continuing the room. There is a wing of illusion rooms and holograms. Finally, there is a giant labyrinth with four colored corners. You enter and must walk to each colored corner then find your way out. All in all we spent about ... read more
