Just two nights in Wellington, to draw up our attack plan for North Island and of course to celebrate Sara's birthday. We wandered around the city a bit before going and watching Kink Knog ( kind of like that typo ). It wasn't very celebratory though as Sara spent most of the morning saying "I hope they don't still kill the monkey", then blubbed her eyes out for the whole second half and spent the rest of the evening miserably saying "They shouldn't have killed the monkey should they?". Unfortunately Sara's birthday is a high profile event and no photographs were permitted.... read more

Just spent two brilliant days in Abel Tasman National Park. I think this is the best place we have been so far. It really does look like it does in all the brochures. It is all clear blue water, blue skies and big stretches of golden beaches and secluded coves. We started our trip by getting a water taxi (very small and fast boat) to Onetahuti beach which is to the north of the park. Once there we got into our kayaks and headed along the shore. We were in double kayaks (as usual) although this time Tim got to steer. We headed out to Tonga Island which is a seal reserve and we saw loads of seals which was excellent. They swim along side the kayaks and right under them. They are so playful and ... read more

After leaving Kaikoura we had a day to kill before getting the ferry across to North Island so we spent a day in Nelson. I think the main point of Nelson is to use it as a base to explore the Abel Tasman National Park but we didn't really have time. So barely worth a blog entry really. We stayed on a massive campsite with the rest of New Zealand ( all of them ) and were woken up the next day by their Hi-de-hi style tanoy to tell us the endless activities on offer ( massages and caravan washing ). We opted for the caravan washing. Actually no, we drove to Picton to get our ferry. ... read more

Legs strapped to the chord. Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle to the jumping ledge. Stand up Straight... Deep Breath... Don't look Down... 3, 2, 1, CYA! 134 meters… 8 seconds of freefall… Everything about the Nevis Highwire Bungy Jumping experience is intended to maximize the fear stirring inside you. After the bus ride, you are immediately strapped into a harness before ever seeing the Ravine or Jump Platform. Once suited up, you are allowed to walk out to the viewing deck where you can see the 380m cables stretching across the valley suspending the world's first Bungy Gondola. For the last few weeks while I've been in Wellington I've allowed myself to totally feel at home in the city. As well as working hard, there's so much to explore, so I've taken time out to visit the zoo in Newtown, discovered the open-air swimming pool in Thorndon, and tramped up Mount Victoria to some magnificent views. Venturing further afield I took the train to Upper Hutt to picnic next to the River Hutt and rummaged around Jackson Street in Petone. On the west coast I travelled north as far as Paraparaumu, through Porirua with its harbour and hope to go back to Mana in the next few days to find out about the possibility of snorkelling there. I'm also making my way through the list of cafes, bars and restaurants listed in The Rough ... read more

I know that this story may be familiar to those of you i emailed the first time it happend but sometimes you just have to be versatlie and do what you have to do. This time the location was the waitomo caves on the north island in new zealand. My situation at this time was that i had been living in a car for 4 weeks, obviously for those of you that drive you will know that cars dont come equipped with kitchens and bathrooms. Well at least this one didnt, this was just a standard car, 2 front seats, and small back seats and a large boot.......which incidently we had been using to sleep in. A few towels on the windows and a sleeping bag or 3 and it wasnt too bad......quite homely actually, or ... read more

My Christmas was great. There's so much to say but so little time. I woke up at about 8 am to find Christmas presents being handed out by Andrew (the manager at the hostel) and having a glass of some cheap champange (better then nothing). I spoke with Mom, Dad and Nicole and opened my presents. The family calendar is quite the hit down here in New Zealand! I then went off to Tom and Julia's to meet the rest of their family and have a nice New Zealand Christmas Meal. It consisted of avacado and shrimp, lobster tail, chicken, ham, potatoes, salad, and pasta. For dessert we had triffle with a lot of brandy in it. I really felt like I was going to breathe fire, apple pie, fruit cake (this one was kinda yuckie) ... read more

Boxing Day at Katie & Mark Falcous' farm was awesome. That's not a made up name, nor is the letter "L" silent. Headed across to their farm (former home of the lamb that was now at peace in my stomach) and onto the race track to gamble away a few more bucks. Made it back to Chez Falcous for a BBQ before the rains came, before the Cranium and Charades came out. I was voted the best player by everyone. Fortunately, I can't post video clips here, as my charade entitled "Giving birth" was probably a little more realistic than anyone would want, especially as our host Katie is only a few months away from such pleasures.... read more

I'm still playing catch up with my blog entries.... here's what we got up to after xmas at Collingwood.... Day 1: 17km, 5 hrs Brown Hut - Perry Saddle When I got up on the 27th December I was a little nervous. Today was the day we started a 4 day, 82km walk through the Kahurangi National Park. The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealands 'great walks'. I'd done a couple of great walks already but they weren't in quite the same league... first there was the Tongariro Crossing, but that's just a one day walk, then there was the Queen Charlotte track.... where a boat ferries your bags between hostels so all you carry with you is your lunch. This was a whole new experience for me - we were carrying all our food, ... read more
