It's stopped raining! The grey clouds are gone and it is all blue skies. In some ways that is typical as we were left the glaciers today but it can't be helped. We are in Punakiaki now which is further north up the coast. We are in this really cool hostel that is situated in the rainforest. It is not one building but lots of small cabins each with its own kitchen and stuff. The views out of the windows are great. We went to the Pancake Rocks earlier (which is what a lot of people come here to see) and they were great. One of my favourite things so far. They are these tall rocks that are actually stacks of rocks (I assume they are supposed to look like pancakes). There are lots of blow ... read more

Our last Stray driver and our guide to the Catlins was Noddy. A nice enough bloke, but very opinionated and always having a dig at the Aussies for one reason or another. We made several stops on the trip up to Dunedin at: a fur seal colony, a petrified forest preserved by molten lava millions of years ago at Curio Bay, three Hector Dolphins playing in the surf at Porpoise Bay and then a walk down to see yellow eyed penguins at Nugget Point.. but they were hiding! At Dunedin - 'the most scottish town out side of scotland!' - we stayed in the On Top Backpackers, a brand new hostel built with a 16 table Pool bar on the groundfloor. Lin went for a walk around town and the shops while I went on a ... read more

We tried to get a late checkout but they were so busy we couldn’t, however they did clean our room last so we were able to stay in it until 11:00 am instead of 10:00 am. We had breakfast in our room and I made some phone calls on some rentals I saw in the Park City newspaper. We are starting to get anxious to get a rental for ski season. We stored our bags and went into town to complete some errands. The towns we will be in for the next week or so will be even smaller than Te Anau so we had to take inventory on anything we might need until we get back to Christchurch on January 4th. Michael spent some time on the Fantasy Football website and I worked on getting ... read more

I had a great day today, and nice night last night. Kerikeri puts on a Caroles at Dusk event every year, so I decided to go with a couple of people from the hostel to sing some caroles and try and get into the mood here amongst such summer weather. I just thought to myself when we were singing "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas", how could they sing it when they've never experienced it, and sing with such gusto at that. I then started to sort of, kind of miss not having a white Christmas. Today we were off work early at 3pm to have some social time at work with beers, champange and snacks. I then received more presents from Tom and Julia (bosses) and Pam. Both packages of which I think contain chocolate. ... read more

We rented a car and drove to Whakatane to meet Steve and his family and spent the Christmas with them. We had a really nice time with them and enjoyed our first Christmas outside Finland. In New Zealand the Christmas is the warmest time of the year so we had barbeques, played games, went for beach and ate a lot. So it felt more like the midsummer festival in Finland. We also did some sightseeing around Whakatane and visited the town of Kawerau. Entering the town brought us memories of Oulu, feeling the familiar scent of the paper mill in our noses. Apparently this is not most popular tourist attraction around the area, judging on the laughter of Steve and Richard when they heard of our visit. However, we learned that when the mill was built ... read more

It’s been just a short while over a week since I left the states and not much has happened that would separate the beginning of this trip from the average Aussie/Kiwi holiday. I can’t show any pictures of Sydney that you haven’t already seen a thousand times whether it be from the Olympics or wherever. Below are some pictures from Christchurch New Zealand however there’s not much to report from that city either due to the fact that we were there for no more than 18 hours total. The Tranz Alpine train ride through the southern alps of the South Island was interesting but not nearly as breathtaking as advertised. It was once we got our rental car and began the drive down the coast on the wrong side of the road where this trip and ... read more

Stenformationerna i havet ... read more

Arriving at the ferry terminal at Bluff, we could see across the water to the huge Aluminium smelting plant that we had heard about at Lake Manapouri. A huge facility if a bit of an eyesore! We caught the Stewart Island Experience ferry and and hour later, arrived in the little harbour that was the centre point of Oban, the only town on the Island. Our accommodation was the Stewart Island Backpackers which was quite pleasant, and we bagged a twin room from the pile of keys available. It was only midday by the time we arrived so we had a nice afternoon on a little sandbar. I reached it by climbing over rocks from another beach. Lin took the more scenic route! Great to just chill out for a bit. Had a drink in a ... read more

It's still raining!! It has been raining for the last 3.5 days pretty much non stop. I did not realise it could rain that much. I think the following poem entitled "Rain" pretty much sums it up! It rained, and it rained, and rained and rained. The average fall was well maintained. And when the tracks were simply bogs, It started raining cats and dogs. After a drought of half an hour We had the most refreshing shower. And then, the most curious thing of all A gentle rain began to fall. Next day was also fairly dry (save for the deluge from the sky) which wet the party to the skin, And after that.... the rain set in! We have managed a bit of walking but it has all been a bit on the wet ... read more
