By now you've probably noticed that most of my travels been in the winter. The reason is simple, in my line of work, spring time and summer are usually filled with projects, making it hard for me to take leave. Also, there simply aren't a lot of public holidays during the summer time. In the winter, I can usually get away with taking maybe 10 days of vacation, and get out 20 days of break by stringing together the Christmas and New Years holidays. Also, in the winter time there aren't much activity in the office anyways, so you can leave guilt free. Anyways, after having travelled exclusively to cold places for the past 3 days, I was fed up in 2004 and determined to go somewhere warm for a change. Even though I would still ... read more

I spent the last few days in New Zealand in Christchurch staying with my great-auntie Janet - well I think that is her relation to me. Janet has been in N.Z. for forty years, yet she still has a broad Dundee accent while I have been in the country four weeks and have a strange mixture of accents depending on who I am talking to at the time. Janet and her welcoming friends and family are proud Scots and seem to have enjoyed re-telling stories from their past and I have very much enjoyed listening to them. Janet took good care of me, feeding me home-made soup and making sure my electric blanket was turned on. In fact it was just like being at home - which is where I wanted to go when I left ... read more

After deliberation, I decided to go back to the Remarkables for another days' skiing.  I had enjoyed the first day so much and my skiing had come on heaps in a short space of time so I hired all the gear again and headed up the mountain. At the end of my last lesson the instructor said I was about a level 3B so I went along for my morning lesson and stood in the 3B line.  We headed straight up the hill and went for a test-run to make sure all the 3As & Bs had assigned themselves to the correct ability group.  Well I had managed to forget almost everything from the previous days skiing and was tkaing it a little too slowly for the 3B group and I was demoted :( This must ... read more

I was pretty jealous of the folk who had perfectly clear weather and took a scenic flight back to Queenstown, so you can imagine how happy I was to wake up and find that yesterday's overcast weather had cleared and once again the sun was shining without a cloud in sight. I phoned the airline and arranged to be picked up from my hostel, taken to the airport, a 45min scenic flight and a transfer back to the hostel in Queenstown.  Yep, the credit card has absorbed yet another one of my impulses which I will have to deal with when I get home!!! It turned out to be even better than that though - for no extra charge a hunky pilot picked me up and flew me back to Queenstown!!! Oh yeah!!! You will be pleased to ... read more

A more reasonable start this morning a cushie 9.50am pick-up from my hostel by the kayak instructor Wayne. Yes, I am going kayaking again - this is the one place I was determined to have a go at it before I even arrived in N.Z. so despite being on many kayak trips already, I booked a full day trip - surely I should be good at it by now....This is the furthest south I have been on my trip and this was also set to be the coldest trip I had been on to date, so I was pretty pleased that the kayak folk had lovely matching stripey thermal gear to dress up in as well as fleeces, beanies (hats) and spray jackets in a fabulous shade of purple.Back in a tandem kayak - which are ... read more

Well what can I say.. a great trip comes to an end... New Zealand's South Island is one of superior beauty. We flew into Christchurch on the 24/7. After a few troubles at airport security (surprise surprise) we went to the car hire section. As it turns out they had stuffed up our booking. They had given us 2 cars that had not been skiierised, even though they knew we were driving to Queenstown to ski. So after reorganising, that took us just as long as it did to fly form Sydney to Christchurch, we were under way with our 6 hour drive at 7pm. We drove in complete darkness the whole way, which we would later find out was a tremendous shame. We arrived at Queenstown and checked into our hotel. Rohan, Az and I ... read more

WOW!

It was an early 6 o'clock in the morning start from Queenstown and when my alarm went off I could not remember why - possibly because of the whole tea-pot I drank last night without any help or the few hours sleep I had recieved but after a few minutes I came too and remembered that I was taking the most scenic tour in New Zealand to the Milford Sound I have since learned that Milford is actually a fiord (glacier carved then sea flooded) rather than a 'sound' (river carved then sea flooded) In preperation for the long winding roads to one of the most remote areas in the country and the 3hr boat cruise I took one of handy travel-sick pills - I am now blaming this substance on the reason why I missed ... read more

It was an 8am start on the ski shuttle to the 'Remarkables' ski area - apparently in the summer months they filmed some scenes for LOTR here. This mountain range is one of the few that runs North-South. It was a little cloudy but the journey up the hill gave me a perfect view of Queenstown and the surrounding area. The Remarkables ski area is the highest in altitude in the region and after 13,5km of winding twisting steep and at times very scary paths in the big bus I was glad to get my feet on steady ground / snow. But almost immediately I was carried in wave of people onto a less stable surface! As a novice skier and a snow virgin I am not accustomed too the ski/board jargon - what the heck is ... read more

I spent the morning recovering from the party the night before.  We had all gone out to the Red Rock to meet up with other Kiwi Experience passengers and drivers past and present.  Queenstown is normally the point in the trip where people split up and do their own thing or carry on with the tour so we were promissed a party - which is exactly what we got!!  A few of us braved the cold in order to experience the Minus 5 bar, where everything is made of ice including the glasses.  The half hour in the bar wearing thick 'parka' style jackets and furry booties and drinking cocktails was great fun, the maximum time you are aloud to stay is half an hour, but my warm scottish blood could easily have lasted another 30min. When ... read more
