Up early for the climb, the weather has turned for the worse, it's pissing down and you can hardly see in front of your eyes through the fog, should be an interesting climb............ Get to the rendezous point to be told that it's postponed for half an hour as it's too dangerous to start, the fog will hopefully lift, it doesn't but we set off anyway. We get all the gear, waterproofs, gloves, hats, boots and these mental talonz that go on to your boots to grip the ice, the spikes were real blunt like, we looked the part though and set off for the hike. An hour later we were at the foot of the glacier and Fiona was already debating if she could go any further, the boots had given her mental blisters already, ... read more

We got up early for our drive and rang the bell at reception to check out, the chick was nowhere to be seen and after speaking to another punter we were told that she doesn't ever show face before 09:30, now that was no good to us as we paid a $20 key deposit and I wasn't leaving without it, helpfully the other punter offered us the $20 and said she'd hand the key in when reception opened and get the money back, we thanked her and hit the road. On the long road to Greymouth, about half-way, Fiona started panicking that the key deposit was in fact only $10, there's nothing we can do now though, so if we ripped you off by $10 in Nelson please get in touch so Fiona can appologise. It was a roasting day today so we got creamed up and headed out for a walk along the river. Nelson is allegedly the centre point of New Zealand and they have a plaque and that to prove it, it's up some huge hill that's about a two hour walk but as it was a lovely day we thought we'd go and find it. The river walk was nice but there's millions of these sand fly about, Fiona is happy now that I've been bitten a couple of times, she though they were picking on her but it seems they're not fussy after all, bad news for me. Anyway we made it up the hill and it was worth it, we had to stop a few times on the way for water and a seat in ... read more

Doesn't have quite the same ring to it as the Gerry and the Pacemakers number but the having sailed across both I can say that this one wins hands down. It was an early crossing so we had to be at the port for 7am, the boat left at 8am and it was so foggy that we didn't hit top speed for a while, the crossing took about 20 minutes longer than expected and we docked in Picton at 10:35. The views from the ferry were amazing and it was roasting when we landed so a quick change into our shorts and we were ready for the 2 hour drive to Nelson. Picton looks nice and we're back here in a couple of weeks so took the opportunity to nosey about a couple of hostels then ... read more

Just arrived at Franz Josef Glacier and I can tell you the view is pretty good .. so why am I inside an internet cafe? Beacuse its too bloody hot. Can you believe it .. I have nothing but jumpers and rain coats in that rucksack and its been 20 odd degrees every day - I'd say its about 27 at the moment!!! We have our trip for tomorrow booked so we have an evening to do nothing for once. It was only a two hour drive from the last place we stayed. So I suppose I'm going to do some ranting about NZ instead of the whistle stop version I have been giving you over the last three weeks. We had a brilliant piece of luck on Sunday. We stopped to see the Pancake Rocks ... read more

Right, I have 27 mins left before the cafe closes and I can't even remember what I have done on what day so I'll do a quick top ? list.... 1. Abel Tasman National Park This was amazing - no one told me that the beaches would be so amazing here. We went on a two day trip - one day hiking and one day kayaking - we camped on the beach and went kayaking right up to the baby seals. How gorgeous were they!!! The views were fantastic and the kayaking was easy. We went with the Sea Kayak Company and had a really chilled out guide. It cost the same amount as doing a freedom kayak so it was def worth it as B and I hadn't done any proper kayaking before www.seakayaknz.co.nz. 2. ... read more

I arrived in New Zealand early in the morning on Sunday, January 23rd, after a long overnight flight from LA. When I arrived in Christchurch I checked into the Windsor Private Hotel, which is a turn of the century home that has been converted into a bed & breakfast, and then I went exploring. It was a beautiful day that I spent walking through the streets of Christchurch - I visited Cathedral Square with it’s large gothic church and stone walkways, I walked through the many parks along the Avon River watching the punts, which are similar to the gondolas in Venice, and the ducks go by, I learned the history of the surrounding region in the Canterbury Museum and I walked through the verdant forests and colorful fields of flowers and grass in the botanical ... read more

Rolling off the car ferry into Picton, the port at the top end of the South Island, is like driving into a slightly different world. The fjord like scenery of Malborough Sound gives a slightly mystical introduction to a land of lakes, mountains and waterfalls - where sheep are many and people are few. No wonder that this has become one of the "must sees" on the international backpacker trail... A real frontier land wilderness. There are towns and villages scattered about, but they tend to be sleepy affairs with some of the regular facilities, a couple of bars, a cinema showing slightly out of date Hollywood films, and caravan parks and camp sites from the same era. The towns are really reminiscent of Britain of the 50s or 60s - politeness from strangers, slow service ... read more

Hi Everyone, Well I am finally going to finish the journal of my trip before it is so far away that I will forget everything. Of course the time I choose to do this I really should be studying, but I've had enough for the day. So I think I pretty much finished spain..... We had an interesting time getting to the Barcelona airport. We left our lovely fancy (but cheap amazingly enough) hotel with great instructions from the receptionist to get a taxi (note to self....travel LIGHTLY next time :p) to the train station and get a bus (which supposedly left every 20mins) from there to the airport. Upon arrival at the train station we got lost, got sent from counter to counter only to be told when we were finally able to ask for ... read more

4 days, of amazing views. 5 nights Freezing cold crampt tents with Mike me and Clarke all sharing a 2 man tent hmmmmm i am still not over your farts Clarke they are disgusting but i admit they did keep us warm so i thankyou. I made a vital error whilst in Queenstown preparing for this trek. I did'nt buy any boots and had to make do with a pair of old sneakers. Not a good idea, but i made it! the sneakers did'nt. You feel like you've hiked to the top of the world on some parts of this track, its truely beautiful, also surreal to be walking along the side of a mountain to look down and see clouds beneath you and planes flying beneath you. Gorgeous part of the world so clean & ... read more
