Note to self from last entry: try to avoid writing a blog after drinking too much the previous night. Taking my own advice, I'm in a better mood, despite constant rain all day. Yet because I'm now only doing miniscule distances and the novelty of it still being warm, I quite enjoyed it and hope that my hair will now become curly. Come to think of it, the only hair I have IS curly, further ruminations on which now cease. Camping beats hostelling. Except tonight, of course, with the rain. I found a free campsite by the beach in Charlestown on the west coast, tucked into a bottle of wine, watched the sunset, then wandered into the working mens club. They're proud to boast the smallest membership of any working mens club in New Zealand and ... read more

So, we were going to wake up at 6:45 to get our day going early, since the sun exists nice and early in these parts. But...Murray was in charge of the alarm clock, so it was 7:30 when the body decided to start moving around. Still in good spirit, we headed off up island to see an arch, some caves, and some rain forest. Was a great view of the ocean to start our day, and then we travelled on a 16km stretch of single land gravel, only one mini bus on it's side, good thing it was a dry day. The arch was all it was built up to be, 200 metres long of limestone, 30 metres high and 40 metres wide...and just a trickle of an iron laden stream. We found a couple of ... read more

Cloudy with occasional sunny intervals. Showers turning to rain later Packed the campsite and headed west along highway 6, without any real idea of a destination for the day (or even for the week). Perhaps inspiration will strike along the way. The road started along a broad valley, cultivated with vineyards on the valley floor and with forested sides.Gradually the valley became narrower and 'wilder' and the boulderyshallow Buller river became visible meandering about the valley floor. Reached the small town of Murchison in time for coffee - I suspect it's always really just catered for travellers - and then carried on along Highway 6, through the Buller Gorge now - a narrow valley with a river that's grown in size. When the decision point came, I headed along Highway 6 towards Westport, further north along ... read more

The drive from Haast to Fox Glacier is short, although pretty. We had a few stops on the way to look at the beautiful coastline. When we made it to Fox Glacier, we went straight for a hike to check it out. The scenery is quite nice, and the glacier is quite amazing to look at. It’s a very fast moving glacier (compared to other glaciers) and there’s often ice and rock falling down the face. As a result, they don’t let you near it without a guide. There are a few river crossings to get to the glacier face. Emma’s approach was to carefully balance are walk across the stepping stones to cross each creek. Matt just ran through the water. He got more wet, but it certainly got some laughs from the people waiting ... read more

“This is the most scenic drive in all of New Zealand,” Robert says as we start our journey from Franz Joseph to Wanaka. The route winds along the West coast through the mountains then dips into valleys with wide riverbeds full of glacial debris and water so clear that it reflects the deep, blue sky. When it’s time for a “flat white,” we stop at a combination restaurant and salmon farm. A wooden boardwalk wanders through the trees and beside four tanks holding salmon that are swimming round and round. Our coffee break over, Robert drives a while longer then stops to guide us on a one-and-a-half hour walk through the rainforest to Monroe Beach. The walk crosses a stream on a swing bridge where the path leads deeper into the native forest. The sound of ... read more

The Franz Joseph Glacier After we arrived back in Queenstown, we had our fill of pizza and our first of many tastes of Monteith's beer. Our rental car, that we picked up the following morning, was a hatchback Corolla and was Steve's dream car. He loved everything about it including backing up, as did the culvert and PBC pipes he would later encounter. Within minutes we grew accustomed from driving on the left side of the road, and Steven was acclimated to the road conditions (windy, narrow, steep roads with many entrance obscured one-way bridges). As we continued through central New Zealand to the west coast, the roads made Erin feel ill. All she could think about was a car coming around the extremely tight corners and crossing the center line and sending her and ... read more

The rafting trip was not cancled. A couple from the Netherlands signed up for the trip last night. We met up with the rafting company at thier base close to Westport and then followed them up to the take out point. It saved us about an hour's drive east after the rafting trip was done. Then we hopped on the van with the raft and drove to the put in point about 11 km up the buller gorge. The trip was lots of fun. A good introduction to rafting for Chris. There were a few nice rapids and everyone worked well together. Anne got out and floated down the river through some small rapid a couple of times. Tony took a swim twice too, but only once was intentional. Tony also jumped off the side of ... read more

Last night we had a lovely dinner in Franz Josef and then drove to Hokitika and stayed at a wonderful farmstay called Kaniere Farmstay. It was a nice place with two rooms and a kitchen. They had some cows from scotland called Belted Galloway Cattle. They were very furry with messy hair. We drove around Hokitika a bit in the morning and checked out the tea room with the "largest teapot collection in New Zealand" They served some very nice pancakes there. We also visited the Jade Factory and the local library was having a quilt display so we stopped in a took a look. Next we drove to Greymouth and spent some time at the local McDonalds using the internet access there. Greymounth is where the TranzAlpine Railway terminates on the West coast and they ... read more

Some days just cry out for a blog entry. Today was one of those days. Nothing spectacular happened, but taken together it was just a good day. The kids are now almost entirely self-sufficient in getting themselves out to school. I completed a computer rebuild back at the office - all done remotely of course. Tackled a number of issues for our house renovation. Went for a run along the river before the kids came home from school. Against all odds, helped Adrianne find a very special ring which she lost swiming down by the river yesterday and then laid out in the sun while the kids floated by in the river. A flat white courtesy of Marg at the Broadway Tea Rooms followed by a light dinner at Dawsons. Attended an ITP (tourism board) event ... read more

Torin jälkeen päätettiin jatkaa matkaa kohti Greymouthin kaupunkia/ky... read more
