Another weekend, another Rotary event. "Rough and Tumble" was sponsored by the Westport Rotary club. The plan was to head out to the Rough and Tumble lodge near Seddonville (half way between Westport and Karamea) for a weekend of merrymaking and tramping. Seddonville was formerly a mining community named for past Prime Minister Richard Seddon (1893-1906 - frequently and aptly referred to as King Dick). It is currently home to a rare mollusc (giant land snail), which is found only in the Seddonville area. It is considered nationally endangered and has been the subject of considerable controversy involving the local coal mining operations. In the end a major project was undertaken to "relocate" the snails. We arrived at the lodge by convoy in the early afternoon. The Rough and Tumble bush lodge proved ideal wilderness accommodation ... read more

We ultimately decided to take Mum and Graeme down to Fiordland this week - a long trek to squeeze into 5 days, but they were both very keen to see one of the dramatic sounds for which New Zealand is known around the world. So we headed out via Greymouth to Hokitika where we had our first stop to browse through the local museum. The museum is small but concentrated on local history. A fine green stone (pounamu - Mauri jade) display featured prominently as well as an intriguing scale model of a gold dredge made entirely out of Meccano. It apparently took some 3000 hours to complete. We had lunch on the patio of the Café de Paris. Before leaving town we went out to the mouth of the Hokitika River to watch a half ... read more

Lotsa noise again - didn't sleep alot but the ear plugs helped. Think the most we got in any one stint was 3 hours. It didn't help that we had to be at the train station by 7.45, taxi booked for 7.30 which means up to shower and eat at *groan* 6.30am. Susan was not impressed as I'm sure most of you can imagine. Mind you I wasn't feeling any different after my night of non-sleep! The taxi got us to the station with plenty of time to spare. Our seats were allocated on check-in which saved us having to fight with the oldies for the better seats. I have no doubt we would've lost the race! :-) (Just kidding, they were pleasant enough people really!) We were looking forward to the trip on the Tranz ... read more

I got up even earlier this morning with one of the other girls from my dorm who was also travelling on the magic bus (the backpackers bus tour company I'd booked to see the South Island with). We had our breakfast then went to wait for the bis to find that it was pouring it down. We stood sheltered for as long as we could then we ran out to the bus when it appeared. The bus wans't too full which meant that everyone got two seats to themselves. The itinerary for the day was Nelson to Greymouth with a few stops along the way. After only about an hour the bus driver informed us that we'd just stopped at the last traffic lights til Dunedin (pretty much the other end of the island and on ... read more

Another fine day could not be passed up. I headed out to the coast to the Fox River about 20 minutes south of Westport and hiked about 8 kms inland alongside the river to a cave set into the wall of a limestone gorge. It was a spectacular, sunny day. The walk follows the banks of the river crossing it in two places before heading up the gorge along a path of slippery of rocks. The entrance to the cave is striking in its own right. I saw one young couple on the way to the caves, but there was otherwise no sign of anyone. This made the cave exploration all the more isolating. Exploring the cave alone and unguided was at times an eerie experience, with the constant sound of dripping water. An unanticipated sighting ... read more

It was a fabulous spring day today - 18 degrees and fine. To nice to spend indoors. So I abandoned my indoor chores, packed a lunch and headed down the highway toward Springs Junction to climb Mount Haast. Mount Haast is a prominent triangular peak clearly visible from the highway about 20 minutes from Reefton. The summit is 1,587 metres above sea level. It is a steep but manageable climb. The track winds up a mixed beech forest for about an hour. The vegetation then gradually changes and thins out for 15 minutes until you emerge above the tree line. From here the peak is deceptively close, but still another good hour away. I was grateful to have my trekking poles. The snow was melting in the spring sunshine making it very unstable to walk on. ... read more

We saw Marie off this morning on the "bus" to Christchurch. She'll be back in Toronto in about 30 hours, no doubt glad to be sleeping in her own bed. We had a fine visit and we are sending her back with a much improved, although still not perfect Kiwi accent. The weather was almost perfect. While Marie was here we had almost no rain (1 mm all last week). However, there has been a real deluge in the last 24 hours to make up for it. It was good weather for Marie to head home. The house was strangely quiet, as I got caught up the with laundry and scrubbing the mold out of the shower once again. A bug of some kind is sweeping through the family. Josh came home from school today feeling ... read more

Our first stop was the Nelson Lakes National Park where we went for a walk alongside Lake Rotoiti, surrounded by snow capped mountains. After a BBQ sausage by the lake, we drove to Murchison for lunch. We continued through the very scenic Buller Gorge and arrived in Westport at 4pm where we watched an exciting last 15 minutes of the local rugby game. Then we walked around the small town and bought dinner and beers for the evening at the hostel. We sat in the cosy TV room and watched Austin Powers before having dinner and a couple of beers. We went to the local bar at 8.30pm where there was a live band and all the rugby players from both teams. A few of us pushed on to a reggae bar where I watched a ... read more

After logging hundreds of kilometres on our week long expedition to Milford Sound, we headed back to the familar surroundings of Reefton from Queenstown. It was about a 9 hour drive including an hour for lunch spent in Haast. The weather was fine and the scenery dramatic. Through the Haast Pass we came across a number of vintage cars, including a number of Porsches, all part of a car rally. These twisting roads are perfect for an enthralling drive. In a 7,000 lb Toyota Landcruiser with a high centre of gravity, these same roads result in motion sickness for the passengers. Astrid and the kids are no doubt used to my erratic driving and sat in the back, their view of my random lane choices at least partially blocked. Marie got the front seat and a ... read more
