Last friday was friday the 13th and I'm not superstitious or anything but still... I hate days like these. So yeah I went to the Hauroko lake, the deepest lake in New Zealand and I did a hike that was the most exhausting track that I did so far. But I DID IT and as the sayings goes: the best view comes after the hardest climb! Beside that I drove to the Clifden limestone caves, where I saw glow worms for the first time! On sunday I spontaneously decided to hike to the first hut from the Kepler Track. I have to admit that it was quite exhausting to go up especially as I had an extra weight because of my backpack. Additionaly, the weather conditions weren't the best. However I was very proud of myself ... read more

Leaving Fiordland behind (Saturday 25thFebruary) it seemed we had also left the good weather behind, as we headed first east and then north from Te Anau towards Queenstown, following the south-eastern shore of the lightning bolt-shaped Lake Wakatipu for the final fifty kilometres. If there is one destination in New Zealand that is more hyped than any other – especially in backpacker circles – it would have to be Queenstown. But as we arrived under leaden grey skies, the town's appeal wasn't immediately apparent; so after heading back to nearby Frankton to stock up on groceries, we passed straight through Queenstown and made our way out to the DOC campground at Moke Lake, located high up in a steep-sided valley to the north of Lake Wakatipu. And there by the shores of Moke Lake, we were ... read more

Journeyed this morning via Cromwell (fruit growing region) to Wanaka... but stopping at a little known village called Tarras. Tarras was put on the map by new Zealand's most famous sheep, Shrek. Having avoided muster several years running, Shrek the merino sheep was finally found living in a remote cave in the Otago hills above Tarras. Merino sheep are renowned for their beautiful fleece.... but several years without being shorn had left Shrek with an ogre like appearance, his fleece looking like an oversized jumper covering below his knees and over his eyes. His first shearing was shown live of NZ tv (where else would give it prime time viewing??) ... the fleece weighing in at 25kgs. His human like personality made him a national icon, and he has raised funds for numerous children's charities. His ... read more

A spectacular view of Mount Cook, Mount Tasman and The Southern Alps started our day. When you are in the township of Fox, drive towards Lake Matheson and look behind you when you reach the motels on the edge of town. Today was unparalleled beauty, clear blue skies, sun glistening off the mountains, the colours of nature in absolute splendour. We drove south along the Haast highway, this road was only opened in 1965. The whole area is UNESCO listed, conservation was a topic very much in the forefront of NZ conversation at this time, so other than the Maoris, gold miners and some farmers and fishing industries this area of NZ was largely unexplored and untouched. And no mistakes had to be undone, virgin pristine rainforest is everywhere. The waters are clean, mountain streams and ... read more

... read more

From Queenstown we went to Wanaka, this is the gem of the South Island in my eyes. The weather was beautiful the entire time we were there, which definitely gave it the advantage, and the scenery was just gorgeous. This was also our LAST place to stay in the campervan and the penultimate stop on our tour. On our first day we had a coffee in the sunshine on the waterfront and went on a walk to Eely Point Reserve which is a peninsula on the edge of Lake Wanaka. It was a lovely walk and we had views into and out of the bay which were beautiful. After walking back we whiled away the rest of the afternoon in the sun on the lakefront. Pushing out the boat that evening we made spaghetti bolognese for ... read more

Even gestopt in Queenstown. Het Benidorm van Nieuw Zeeland. Wat een drukte. Dat waren we niet meer gewend. Rondgelopen en snel weer weg. In Wanaka is het echt stralend weer. Strak blauwe hemel. Relaxed sfeertje.

November 2015 Nostalgic pangs were eased as we drove away from the West coast of New Zealand's South Island by the previous night's deluge of 100mm or so of rain. I had come across this poem in a book about the area whilst staying in the Copland Valley which summed up the West coast's climate well: It rained and rained and rained, The average rainfall was well maintained. And when the tracks were simply bogs, It started raining cats and dogs. After a drought of half an hour, We had a most refreshing shower, And then the most curious thing of all, A gentle rain began to fall. Next day was also fairly dry, Save for a deluge from the sky, Which wetted the party to the skin, And after that...the rain set in! Despite incredible ... read more
