Hello from our camper van (a camp site with wifi - who knew?!), where we have just completed nearly a week of touring over 1000km through the magnificent but currently extremely wet South Island in New Zealand. We hand back our trusted friend tomorrow, yet are still looking forward to another fortnight before moving onto Australia. Not having really been bred as a camper myself, I was a little sceptical when Vicky booked us into living in a vehicle as big as our flat's en suite bathroom for part of our trip. The inevitable rain, veruca ridden showers, luke warm dinners and limited sleep that I'd experienced on my few previous ventures had drummed out any kind of desire to indulge in the activity ever again. This didn't look set to change on our first night ... read more

Kiwi blog #3 Sorry I have been quiet but signal and wifi have been scarce and I have spent the last week ill with a horrible cough. The illness put paid to any high adrenaline high jinks at Queenstown but we may get time later for jetboats and the Nevis swing if we go back We finally got out of Queenstown with a replacement campervan and headed to Bluff to board the ferry for Stewart Island where we had 2 nights booked at the backpackers. The ferry trip is about an hour and we arrived in Oban and walked up the road to check in. We made a quick dash for the pub, the South Seas hotel, for an early dinner as we had to be at the dock for 7:30 for our evening Kiwi Spotting ... read more

Te Anau Leaving Te Anau, it was a crisp clear morning, and unfortunately, I missed the sunrise over the lake - I'll have to remember to get up early next time I'm here! Te Anau to Gore The views were the usual spectacular views I had come to know and love. Gore We stopped off in windy Gore for a morning tea stop, and I went for a quick wander around the town. We then continued along the Clinton Highway to Dunedin... read more

Queenstown Getting up this morning I went for a quick wander around the hotel to get my last views of the mountains around the city - it really reminds me of Vancouver with the mountain backdrop. Kingston to Te Anau The scenery along the road was pretty spectacular Te Anau We stopped here for lunch, and to drop our bags at the hotel, as we were coming back tonight. It was a cute village. Mirror Lakes We then headed towards Milford Sound, stopping at Mirror Lakes. ... read more

We left Dunedin on Route 1 in sunshine once again. It really did lift our spirits. The road was quiet and empty of traffic apart from more of those classic cars pootling along in convoys. Many of the roads had rumble strips down the centre line; we weren't sure if this was to warn dozy drivers they were wandering out of their lane or whether to help with lane demarcation when the roads were covered in snow. It was at about this time that we began to realise that New Zealand should be known as The Land of the Loose Chippings. Jeez, they were everywhere. Roadworks? Loose chippings. Lay-bys? Loose chippings. Car parks? Loose chippings. And when you're in a hire car where every bit of damage has to be paid for you made damned sure ... read more

Hello Friends, Family and fellow Bloggers, We woke up to a nightmare!! We had a parking ticket on our van!! It said there was no freedom camping in Queenstown and we had been issued a $200 fine!!! We were raging mad as we looked all over for signs on the road and even asked a local if it was ok!! IF YOU COME HERE DO NOT PARK ANYWHERE OTHER THAN A PAID SITE!!! We walked down to the police station; they told us we had to go to the council office to query it!! I worked out we were 10 meters in the no parking zone and there was a sign 20km away in Frankton that there was not freedom parking in Queenstown!! I could not believe it she said it would cost too much money ... read more

Well since Dunedin we have done a serious amount of miles, but OMG what a journey. We travelled down the Catlin coastal road and called in at Kaka Point which led us down an unmade road to Nugget Point. There is a lighthouse there and fabulous views out over the ocean and the bays on either side, one of which was cannibal bay, didn't bother visiting this one!! Next onto Purakaunui Falls which apparently are the most photographed falls in NZ, don't really know why this is. They were pretty and the walk to them down the boardwalk was short but lovely. It was like being in the jungle. From there is was back in the car and off the the southern most point on the South Island which is Slope Point, we visited porpoise bay ... read more

Today was the day. My long awaited sea kayaking trip on Doubtful Sound had finally arrived. We had to be up early this morning. We had to meet at the outfitter's office at 7:15am, and it was about a 20 minute drive from our motel. Getting to Doubtful Sound is a bit of a labor of love. After meeting our small group of ten, we boarded a boat for a 45 minute cruise to West Arm (that sounds peaceful, but it really is a little fishing boat, engine running wide open across the lake, so you can imagine how big the lake is for that to last 45 minutes), and then about a 45 minute mini bus ride on a gravel road to where you put in. I'm not at all complaining, mind you, simply describing ... read more

Saturday 7/2/15 Queenstown to Te Anau.Yet another lovely drive, the roads are so quiet and the scenery changes from flat to hilly and forests to bare mountains and snow. The motel in Te Anau is another surprise, a bit dated but large and clean with a big sofa and a little patio area at the front.Went a walk and found 'the best pie shop' well that's what it was called and who am I to disagree. Ian had a pie and didn't seem to be disappointed. Tea was in the pub that was next door to the library, excellent co-locators I think but the ser... read more

It is now week 1 of my Woofing adventure, and before i start, i'm going to give you a little update about my plan for the upcoming months. Having just finished a winter season up in the Southern Alps of NZ, the region opened my eyes to how exciting exploring the outdoors can really be. The extensive skiing and hiking I did during my time there got me really excited to continue exploring New Zealand's backyard. With not much of a budget, the option that made most sense to me was to work in exchange for food and accommodation around the country (Woofing), one week a time. So finally, after a painful last minute search for my first woofing place, my first stop is Lake Manapouri, 20 mins from the township of TeAnau, and not far ... read more
