So by the title of this entry, you may assume that it will follow a theme. In Wanaka we spent our full day hiking up the Rob Roy Valley to the Rob Roy Glacier. It was a nice hike, a couple hours of steady uphill but we're in good enough shape to handle that now. The forest we were walking through wasn't too special but the end of the hike was. We came out above the tree line and there were steep rock faces with deep snow-cover on top of them and many waterfalls coming down them. At any point in time there were between 10 and 15 reasonable sized waterfalls in sight and it made for a great spot to stop and eat our daily pb&j sandwich and hope for the sight of an avalanch. ... read more

Ok so we're finally catching up with out travel blogs! Better late than never but hey, we're on west coast time! It's the back end of no-where but its great! So our adventure continued from Wellington with getting up at 6am... (yes there is such a time in the morning!) and got the Ferry to Picton in the South Island. It was a 3 hour journey, with the last hour and a half being very slow as you sail through the Marlbrough Sounds. It's a really spectacular sight and very peaceful! Luckilly the sea wasn't rough but we didn't really notice as we fell asleep before the Ferry left the port and woke up just as we were entering the Marlbrough sounds! After departing our Ferry we got on our new bus and headed to The ... read more

Today was glacier day!!! We woke up, and got out of the hotel in Queenstown at 7:09. Only one short stop and we arrived in Franz Joseph at 11:45 (387 km). Anne and Chris were very grumpy, but got over it after a meal and after we got hiking. Then.. UP UP UP. The guides carved out steps as we walked behind them (both up and down). At one point there was a big BOOM... sounded like an oncoming earthquake, but it was just part of the Glacier falling away somewhere :) :) There were lots of people there from all around the world. We spoke to someone at length from Ireland, and a couple from the Bay area, CA. we have lots of pictures... We'll see how many get up tonight.... as in... how fast ... read more

An early start was required for a full day’s adventure trek on the Franz Joseph Glacier. We were kitted out with boots, crampons, over trousers, jacket, hat, gloves and socks - everyone looked the same and pretty funny! Though after a bit of climbing it got quite hot, so by the end most layers were off!! It took about 45mins to walk to the glacier and when we arrived it was immense! Helicopters were dwarfed by it and we would only see a few kilometers of it throughout the whole day! Steps had been cut into the glacier so it was easier for us to climb and the crampons made a big difference - walking like a cowboy and stamping our feet! We went through crevices that had only been there a couple of weeks that ... read more

We arrived and found a great cheap backpackers/motel called Chateau Franz. Then were holed up in our room for the rest of the day watching videos because it was chucking it down. Which apparently it does 260 days of the year, on average. We went out for dinner to a place that had a Halloween party on. Only to find that it didn't start till 10pm. The girls were a little disappointed that they didn't get to go trick or treating. Whilst sitting in the restaurant we say a place opposite that did flights over the glacier. After much discussion and thought about Ellie's ears and Aisha dislike of anything scary, we chose to take a flight on a plane rather than on a helicopter. We are glad now as we have been told by someone ... read more

Apologies for my ongoing tardyness with the blog updates. I'm aware I'm pretty behind but rest assured the only reason is that I'm having such a good time that I never seem to get a chance to reflect on what I've done.....anyway I will aim to finish the Australia story.... My time on the east coast ended with a few days in Brisbane where I go the opportunity to visit the Australia Zoo and buy a million Steve Irwin fridge magnets and also allowed me to meet Andy, one of Mark's friends who has sensibly taken up the good life in Aus. I then hopped on a plane and crossed another time zone to Adelaide where the welcome face of the ex Fiona Steer was waiting for me. What can I say? It was absolutely delightful ... read more

We were all up early hoping to leave the greyness and on to Franz Josef, the first of the two Galcier towns in NZ. As we drove further away from Greynouth the day seemed to get brighter, and by the time we stopped for our first tea and loo break at Hokitika the weather was lovely (but still freezing!!). Hokitika was nice there was a reaklly lovely NZ jade shop and a lovely cafe, but we were soon on the move again. After Hokitika we stopped off at a town called Ross, which seems to be one of many of New Zealands old gold mining towns, although this one is still mining gold! They had an old jail and stuff so we had a poke around, then got showed how to pan for gold before being ... read more

My next location was Franz Joseph where my activities begun!!! There is so much to do here in NZ but being on a budget I promised myself just to do alot of the free or cheap activites i.e the sightseeing, walks etc but I did limit myself to a few of the big activities and these were Kayaking, Glacier Hiking and Skiing! On the way we stopped at Ross Goldfields which was where gold had been found and you could have a go at trying to find your own! When we got to Franz I did the Kayaking on Lake Mapourika in the afternoon, it is a black water lake and we ended up rowing 7k in total which I was pretty chuffed about beings my upper arm strength is about as good as my little ... read more

12-15am - Having been fully infected by Claires extreme cold we awoke today both eager and yet slightly dismayed at the fact that we are to climb a giant glacier. Wrapped up warm we plooded down to the centre to be suited and booted with our waterproofs, stunning hats and mittens (Claire was happy) and some kickass army boots, complete with spikes for the ice. When ready we got a bus down to the carpark and hiked to, then up the glacier. Wow. What a view and what a crazy, exhilirating experience. Walking, and slightly stomping up pure ice that seemingly emerges from no-where is a slightly odd feeling and as we reach higher points the ices height increases making beautiful but claustrophobic pathways. Being surrounded by dazzling white and with no route other than up ... read more

8pm - Yesterday we travelled to the town of Wanaka. A lovely lakeside town the view were pretty amazing. After checking into our hostel we went straight to the small lakefront area that holds the few bars and grabbed dinner in a local pub. Although this doesnt sound exciting the view whilst eating made everything worthwhile. Eating food we looked out over the blue, blue lake and snow tipped mountains, Incredible. We later returned to the bar to mock and laugh at the plentiful Karaoke singers all seemingly auditioning (badly) for X-Factor. This morning with Claire feeling very poorly we drove the 4 and a half horus to Franz Josef Glacier. This is a very small town famed for its huge Glaciers upon the mountains. We've booked the trip for tomorrow and i cannot wait. Best ... read more
