Day 14 - Thursday 3rd May Left Lake Wanaka 10.20 ish Gem drove today. The weather was dry and quite warm and sunny. It was a nice scenic drive through tropical forest and mountains to the coast which was very similar and green. We stopped at Haast beach which was pretty with the green mountains close in the background though guess what... there were loads of.... SAND FLIES!!!!! We must be very sweet tasting yumm yumm no sugar needed!! Refulled and had yummy ice-creams. Gem and Sar got out at hte next beach stop which seemed tropical with an island on it! It was lush! Drove on a bit further for lunch at yet another beach with...... SAND FLIES!! .... Picnic in the car again. Drive to Franz Josef from here was windy with much ... read more

Stranded In Franz Josef Australasia » New Zealand » South Island » Franz Josef By DR Drea AKA TedMay 1st 2007Paul Michael James DreaWell the drive from Queenstown was gorgeous, loved Wanaka plus had a vension pie there. weather was gorgeous. Met up with an Irish fella in Franz who invited me to a quiz at a pub. despite a very shakey start we actually won it ! god knows how, this however meant that we got pretty drunk afterwards, finishing off with Bundy and Orange. it goes better with coke! the day after with a massive hangover the weather ... read more

I know it all got a bit exciting with 2 blogs in 2 weeks but its busy driving a campervan! So.... before we left New Caledonia Sarah thought it would be a good idea to jump out of a plane!! As we were accompanying Ben to the parachuting club where he not only skydives himself but also films and photographs others doing their first tandem jump. With the plane ready and waiting on the runway and the 1st tandem jumper nowhere to be seen Sarah was harnessed up and on her way to the plane! Suprisingly sat backwards in a 6 seater plane, not strapped in or attached to the instructor was quite natural! As the incline to 10,000 feet drew nearer 2 student skydivers jumped out and with the roll door open and the plane ... read more

The Glacier Experience Kel Gets Sick Again It’s amazing that Kel’s sickness is traveling at the exact same pace as my sickness did in Asia. After a day of feeling better Kel decided to push it a bit and eat “real” food. When we went out for dinner on Wednesday night Kel had a really nice braised lamb dish that seemed fairly innocuous at the time. Unfortunately about two hours later Kel was in the process of getting sick again…and again. By time she went to sleep that night she had visited the restroom almost ten times and had taken a full days dose of Immodium. Thankfully Kel was able to sleep the whole night without getting sick again but she was completely drained when she woke up on Thursday morning. Since she was afraid that ... read more

Well, Autumn is in full swing and I just got back from my tour of the north part of the South Island. Had a splendid time. Things kicked off with a few days in Christchurch. It was absolutely freezing when we got there. Actually, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it was cold, too cold. First night there I had to stay at some hostel that was a thirty minute walk from the city centre. Bogus. Slept on a couch and it was probably just as warm outside than inside. That week there was a break from school, so everyone and their mother was in Christchurch and all the hostels were full as. Next day things got a little better when I was able to score a bed in the place I wanted to be. ... read more

Well after a week in Christchurch with family, i left to travel new zealand. I caught the coast to coast bus at 8 and set off through some very nice country side seeing some of the places where bits of the chronicles of narnia were shot. To pass the time i listened to music and read my book and got speaking to a german girl from Hamburg. Well we finally made it to greymouth after a very scenic trip aqnd i have to say one of the best bus rides, in terms of scenery i have been on. We only had to wait about 15 minutes before the Stray bus picked us up and took us to Franz Josef, where i would be planning to do a glacier walk. After a few stops and some ... read more

Checked out of our room and head to an internet cafe to book our next two nights in Franz Joseph (alittle behind on booking a room). Hit the road and took the West Coast turn off out of Wanaka on another lucky blue morning. This route took us through the flat wide bottom of a valley and passed by a golf course that I caught Kerry gazing at longingly. We reached Lake Hawea which was as clear as glass as there was no wind in the air today. Climbing hills with the lake at our feet, the far side of the water was flanked by mountains dark in colour and faces that ran vertical straight into the shore. Starting to see less yellow and more green with trees and shrubs which added to the lushness of ... read more

ive just realised how much im spending on the internet... :S not good! still its nice to try and keep in contact with people... haha anyway! yes. Nelson was rubbish. i have no idea what posessed Meg and Meghan to stay there to be honest! Westport was kind of dead too... it has the highest suicide rate in NZ and im not really supprised! Smiley (our new bus driver) made a real effort to liven up westport for us, he drove us down to the beach and we had a massive bonfire for hours... and being a clear night we were able to see the stars and the milky way... and it was really really awesome. the hostel was waaay better than nelson too, which was good. after westport we went to Lake Mahinapua. with this ... read more

.....the Blue Mountains were left behind and Sydney awaited. We spent a good few days there over Easter weekend and did many of the standard travellers things; the Opera house and Harbour Bridge at night, went through the Rocks, surfed at Manly (in the rain - Grrrrr!) and slept at Sydney airport (where they turned off the 5 meter high TV so we couldn't watch the end of the Masters golf or more importantly the England vs Oz cricket - we were disgusted!). Sydney was great fun with some awesome picture postcard views but the weather was a bit of a let down. It weeeeed it down. We flew out of Oz not a moment too soon, as about an hour beforehand England had had the mandatory middle order batting collapse and lost, we didn't ... read more

We arrived in the very small town of Franz Josef at midday, and quickly established that there really is very little to do other than the 'glacier-related' activities! So during the afternoon, we managed to watch more TV than we have in 4 months and became pretty wrinkled in the lush hot tub! This was all perfect preparation for our full-day glacier hike the next day (with the exception of going to the pub for cheap beer and free weird shots in the evening with our the Magic Bus driver and fellow Magic passengers!!). The next morning was absolutely perfect with gorgeous blue skies and a few white fluffy clouds - ideal for hiking on, in and around a glacier! We hiked in a groups of about 12 people and were led by super-fit Tom, ... read more
