After my jade carving I went to place called Franz Joseph Glacier, the place ive been most looking forward to visiting so far! Its only a small little town but home to a 'warm' glacier only one of three in th world and 2 are in nz! It's beautiful the glacier has spread all the way down to the valley floor. The glacier is restricted unless ... read more

Ok so left Christchurch and jumped on the Trans Alpine train across from Christchurch to Greymouth and it was such a stunning journey. It would be great to see the contrast of the mountains in winter aswell- maybe the next trip!!. It took about 4 hours but was well worth it. We finally arrived in Greymouth to glorious sunshine. Most people then get on a coach down to Franz Josef Glacier but our trip said that we should go to Barrytown. I checked with the driver that we were getting on the correct bus and asked him whether he would drop us off in the town centre and he just laughed.... now i know why. When he stopped outside this tavern he joked about the fact that we had to get off quickly before the place ... read more

We had a long bus journey along winding mountain roads to get to the small town of Franz Josef, but it was well worth it. We saw some nice scenery along the way too. The reason for us stopping in such a small place was the same as everyone elses - to experience the Franz Josef glacier. There are loads of ways to do this, but we went for the all-day hike. We had an early start and a 2.5km walk just to get to the terminal face of the glacier where we put on our 'ice-talonz' - special grips to stop us slipping. Combined with the heavy boots, they made for a harder-than-usual days hiking. We soon forgot about it though as we climbed up the steepest guided glacier in the world and got amongst ... read more

so, I know you might think i am crazy, but i assure you, i am not, nor am I an adrenaline junky, but i do love great scenery and their is nothing better than the skies to see the mountains, right? So since the weather turned out to be just right, i decided to jump out of a plane again! actually this is the jump i had my eyes set on from the get-go, and now after Taupo, and getting the first one out of the way, this is the place to just simply ENJOY the jump! And did I ever!!! The Fox and Franz Skydive company ( for Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers) is a very small outfit, with a very small plane, that can only take two jumpers up at a time, . ... read more

I wrote an entry earlier, but it accidently got deleted before I could publish it, then of course my internet time was used up :( very frustrating. Anyway, we went to Franze Josef Glacier where apparently the lighting of the beacons in lord of the rings was films. It was huge and it was a nice day walk to go view it. We considered spending $150 dollars each to walk up the glacier with a tour, but we have been doing so much hiking, we felt we needed a day off. Plus, it was expensive! We got some great pictures. Our favourite glacier was for sure Franz Josef, far more impressive than Fox Glacier just 20 minutes down the road. We stayed at Gillepsie's Beach that evening where we got eaten alive by sandflies. We are ... read more

Part 3 16/02/07 - 17/02/07 Two Long Walks. Wanaka and Franz Joseph Glacier! We took the shortcut to Wanaka over the Coronet range and dropped down to the town nestled on the banks of Lake Wanaka. Yet another beautiful town where we had no time to spend, stopping only for a chai latte in a café and on to the intriguingly advertised ‘Puzzling World’. The puzzles include a complicated maze where you end up walking on average 3 - 5 kilometers in only 1.5 kilometers of passages. Illusionary rooms include a room where all the faces seem to look at you as you move around and a tilt room where a snooker ball appears to roll up hill and water seems to defy grafity and run uphill. The effect room, used in film making appears to ... read more

We had a free morning in Barrytown to chill out so we headed to the beach to look for Greenstone (Jade) which is big business here. I found some nice stones but Dorit, a German friend of ours found some actual jade. We went to Hokitika which is packed with Jade factories before heading to Franz Josef, famous for the glacier. We had the afternoon free to relax. Today I booked onto the heli-hike which is a helicopter ride up onto the glacier followed by 2 hours hiking on the ice. Unfortunately it was cloudy in the morning so we had to put the flight back to the afternoon. It was still cloudy but at least got as far as the heicopter. They took us up to the glacier but they couldn't see the landing site ... read more

Such an amazing day! I thought I was signing up for a walk in the park but this was a full day of playing on an enormous glacier. I'm not sure what the technical term would be but what comes to mind is ice mountaineering. Hahah. Our guide was actually NUTS. I'd say as a rough estimate, ten times more hard core than any of the cliff jumping adrenaline junkies in Jackson. Cliff (ironically), our guide was lanky and didn't speak much but knew every crack and cranny of Franz Joseph Glacier. Our group of ten were all equipped with crampons and ice axes and we scrambled, squeezed, climbed and repelled through a wonderland of ice mazes, tunnels, and crevasses for 6 hours. It was a bluebird day and the ice shone an equally brilliant blue, ... read more

We arrived at the Helihike place on time and the weather today is absolutely superb so we are confident we will be going. At 9am we walked to the Helipad where we kitted up and were put into groups, Ruth and I were in a group with most of the old people which turned out to suck a bit but the experience was still one of the best ever. I have been in a helicopter before but this was a little been daunting with all the cliffs and walls the pilots enjoyed getting so close too. The trip up took about seven minutes and was spectacular, we landed about three quarters up the Glacier and started strapping on our crampons soon after. The group full of younger people were already gone when we arrived so we ... read more
