On the way to Franz Josef the bus stopped at Hokitika, the jade capital of NZ. I saw what I needed to in the rain drenched hour that the bus stopped there, thank goodness I wasn't staying. You can do fun stuff like searching for jade in the local area and carving you own jewellery but the weather was appaling so I'm pleased I didn't stay over. The Aussies beat the Kiwis that night in a close final of the Tri-Nation rugby league championship. I had booked myself onto the full day glacier walk with Franz Josef Glacer Guides who have been taking people up the glacier since the 1920's so hopefully they know what they are doing.
