So on returning from Milford the boys were due to leave and I was going to stay in Queenstown abit longer but accomodation is a real problem there- I couldnt find a bed for love nor money!!!!! So the only other option was to go with the boys- they were dong the rest of NZ in 2 weeks (a little quicker than I wanted as meant to be here 4 weeks but it was great to travel with them and in a car- stopping where and when we wanted- plus it helped with the old purse!!!!!- Thanks boys!!!!!) Next on the list was Franz Josef Glacier.............................................. We didn't do the climb which i regret as you could only go so far up to the glacier without climbing guides...................... but again it all costs money and i ... read more

Update from Zoe Wellington was a nice city. The museum was very interesting (not often i say that) they had a lord of the rings exhibition, which was superb! We also went to the parliament building and watched mps arguing from the gallery - very amusing. In the evening we had a good catch up with Tony and Mel, which was lovely. The next day we got in a flying tin can. This is no exagerration (can't spell that one) it held 12 people and the pilot was 2 rows in front, Dan loved it, me not so much. We landed in Picton then jumped on the bus. Tonight's stop was Nelson where we learnt how to play poker and did a bit of wine tasting, although not enough in my opinion! We then moved on ... read more

Got the ferry from Wellington to Picton and then boarded the bus again for the journey south. Wellington was nice, but wet. Busy few days, when Team Handsome became proud Scottish warriors dressed in bin liners at the Poo Pub fancy dress night. We also had a full day hike on the amazing Franz Josef glacier - has to be seen to be fully appreciated.... read more

Franz Josef! not the Austrian archduke but one of NZ's most famous landmarks, a Glacier in the Wetstlands National Park. Its one of only three that descend from the mountains into temperate rainforest, now I've seen all of them Puerto Moreno, Franz Josef and Fox. We arrived on the Stray Bus from Barrytown mid-avo. First thing we noticed where majestic views and just how damn cold it was. The town, Franz Josef is at the bottom of the glacier and snuggled into the Southern Alps. We stayed at the Rainforest Retreat Lodge, sounds alot nicer than it actually was, full of Kiwi Experience types. The next days weather report was grim so delayed our glacier hike and had a night out. Hit the only open bar in town with a few fellow Stray travelers. Quickly descended ... read more

Got to Franz Josef last night, having taken part in a fancy dress compettion at Greymouth, I dressed up in silver foil and carboard to be a sort of Gladiator (after all Russel Crowe is apparently a Kiwi) had a 4 bed dorm to myself wonderfull! okay i don't mind sharing with people but for frist time in 2 weeks its kind of cool. mind you last 2 weeks i've generally allready known the people I've shared with which helps. Went up and onto to the Franz Josef Glacier today, very hard work but unlike for most people it was a lovely sunny type day. Was something pretty special, hard work going up the ice steps etc trying not to fall into crevaces etc, got some good pics, struggling to upload pics on crappy hostel computers ... read more

Hi everyone, I have been in New Zealand for nearly two weeks now but it feels like I have been here a lot longer. We seem to have done so much and covered so many miles in such a short space of time. It's definetly a lot easier to see things here having our own car. We are cruising around in a Nissan Pulsar, which actually isn't as bad as it sounds. We arrived in Christchurch on Sunday the 28th of April and spent a few days there. It was definetly a great place to start and is still my favourite city in New Zealand so far. Theres a really nice atmosphere everywhere; people singing and playing instruments in the street, coffee shops dotted around outside, trams, and people playing giant draughts in the centre. From Queenstown we had a long, long trip to Milford Sound, way down in the south. On the way we stopped briefly at Te Anau, a pituresque lake on the tourist trail, and headed on down the one way highway. The drive got more and more spectacular, we went from the green fields and mountains to driving down a steep narrow, winding road past walls of mountains. Their high peaks were hidden in mist, so it just looked like granite walls, rising vertically up from the gorge below. Waterfalls that tumbled down looked like dribbling taps; dwarfed by the sheer size of the mountains. It was a beautiful drive, and eventually we arrived at Milford Sound itself: the water calm and still, the mountains silent beside, with trees and bushes clinging impossibly to their cliffs. The Ice Climb We arrived at the small town of Frans Joseph, famous for it unique glacier that decends from the mountains into sub-tropical rainforest!! We had decided to book the 'Ice Climb' - which is the most difficult of the various expeditions on the glacier!! bring it on badger! We left at 7.45am :o( ...headed towards the MASSIVE glacier armed with full-on sharp Crampons (sharp metal foot attatchments that aid ice climbing), ice axes..proper!!, helmets, harness, big-off climb boots, and waterproofs. The Glacier itself doesn't look very big from the view point, until Mike & Sally, our guides, tell us it is a 2km walk jst to the start!! the closer we got, the more the sheer size of it becomes apparent! We began climbing up ice steps carved every morning by the rangers...it took ... read more

Crampons. I like Crampons. When on icy terrain such as a glacier I find that 12 sharp spikes are very useful for gripping. If I was to guess the evolution of footwear on ice, I would say it goes something like this: * Hobnail Boots * Crampons (with spikes) * Crampons (with front spikes, for walking uphill) So, given how good crampons are at what they do I wonder why the Franz Jospef glacier guides provide us with the spike free Talonz(TM). Crampons without spikes. Spikes being the things that grip. So two steps backwards in Evolution. No front points, no spikes. Just plain stupid. Anyway... enough of my rant. Today I went up to explore the Franz Josef glacier - but got a lift up the first 6km by Helicopter! The flight was AMAZING. We ... read more
