So I've finished packing and now the nerves are starting to set in!! I can't help but worry about will I have the courage to meet new people in Vancouver?? Since I'm not meeting Spence or Sophie till Calgary and I have a week n Vancouver alone :S Haha But I just checked the weather report and the funny thing is the only difference between Wellington and Vancouver is the fact that Wellington has wind and Vancouver doesn't. Despite the fact NZ is in Spring! and Canada is in Autumn! Now that doesn't seem right does it? O well time to turn off the Lappy and Pack it for the flight even though I don't leave for another 6 hours but I need to get my Outrageous Fortune fix before I go oh and Marmite!! ... read more

Wellington is the Capital city and administrative capital of New Zealand despite being only NZ's second biggest city next to Auckland. It may not take the gold in size but it wipes the floor with the other cities when it comes to being the windiest and wettest. A day at sea prior to arriving in Wellington and at about 4pm a message came from the Bridge announcing a POD of Whales on the port side. Chris and Roisin rushed to their balcony fighting over the binoculars. As Roisin raised the binoculars to her eye's Chris yelled, "Over there!" pointing out to sea. The POD was some distance away and it was not possible to see any of these magnificent beasts breaking the water. They did see, however, a couple of waterspouts shooting upward of 20 feet ... read more

Hi all, added a map again so you can see the progress around the islands. Blog a bit later than usual, struggled with some of the internet connections at the campsite, am finishing this on Emmas mum Alison's laptop! After writing last blog stayed near Orewa beach, just north of Auckland for one night before heading south east towards Thames. I have been staying in the "proper" campsites as they only about ten pounds a night and means can plug in and have 240v to charge stuff and play music and the heater! Plus they have nice hot showers, laundry facilities, TV room, internet and kitchen to cook in. Orewa campsite was near the town so walked in and had a few pints of Guiness in an Irish bar then bought some fish and chips to ... read more

Geo: -41.2865, 174.77613th May WellingtonWe have been very lucky with the weather so far, considering it is late autumn here, but the rain finally caught up with us today.Wellington has been called San Francisco's twin – it has a wonderful waterside location, is hilly, has a cable car and is prone to earthquakes. It is also notoriously windy but we managed to stay upright today. Although we have only had a couple of days here it definitely seems to be a very "livable" place. Alan is glad to be back in a city. He says that scenery is scenery but every city is different ! Hey ho, you can take the boy out of Hong Kong but...!We spent the first part of the day in the Parliamentary District, the focus of which is three very different ... read more

A gloomy start to the day. In the daylight we had a chance to look around the campsite we’d came across last night in the dusk, drizzle and gloom - in Ashurst Domain (no Shires here Sam!). The Domain grounds have training grounds, playing grounds, the camping ground and the cemetery ... right next door to the camping ground! Cosy! It wasn’t a bad site though, very reasonably priced (cheap!) - John was chatting to the warden, and he told him that they will soon be charging separately for showers as the locals keep coming over to use them and they’re using up all the hot water! For once the campers were not the ones getting the blame. When we were talking to the lady in the Information Centre in Napier, she was telling us that ... read more

Kia Ora! That'll be Hi in Maori. There are lots of photos here by the way and they don't quite match up with the words like they normally do so just scan through the photos after (or before if you can't be bothered to read the words!!). So after dropping off our Hippie in Cairns we headed for the airport and our 2 flights to Auckland (connecting in Brisbane). As we arrived in very late (midnight) Patrick had the wonderful suggestion of staying at the airport instead of travelling into town for a short night stay. Well I did investigate this on the very useful website all about staying in airports and it suggested the observation lounge for a decent night kip. Well decent night kip I didn't get as it was a little too bright, ... read more

I have to admit I wasn't in top form when I blogged from Rotorua last weekend. I wasn't in a very good hostel and it was also probably the unfriendliest one I'd stayed in to date. I mean, I appreciate some people who travel solo do actually want to be alone, I understand that, but if someone walks into the communial kitchen and says hello (and that's all, I don't cling to people), the least you can do is reciprocate. It reminded me of a discussion with an English guy I met at my hostel in Ahipara a few weeks ago, who was rather wistfully telling me how he had this wonderful idea of sitting around a table in a hostel making new friends, but it hasn't happened. I don't know, are people getting unfriendlier? Anyway, ... read more

Rivendell, crazy sevens action and old friends Well the drive to Wellington didn’t look that far but it was!! Poor Nath had to stop a good few times to reinflate his arse cheeks, and I couldn’t share the burden as my foot was still massive and wouldn’t allow me to wear shoes!! We had stopped part way though at a place called Woodville, where I had seen a poster previously about cheese cakes. We stopped by just to see what the fuss was about at a place called yummy mummy’s and perused the 20 long lists of different flavours. Talk about lush, they then hooked us in with a free sample (it was sooo thick), so we gave in and had the hard decision of only picking two….I had tiramisu and Nath went for raspberry crumbled ... read more
