Nor westerly winds have been buffeting me for days - providing me with riding that has been at times exciting, frightening and simply pleasant. From Palmerston North I took something called the Pahiatua Track, which in fact is not a track but a perfectly good, steep but sealed road . On a high ridge, wind generators spun swiftly and a cold blast sent a chill through me and pushed the bike off its stand. Later the same day, I was forced to push THE BEAST OF BURDEN in places, for fear of being shunted off the road. At other times, the wind struck from behind and sent me flying effortlessly uphill. I felt adrift on an ocean of wind. Buffeted in More Senses than One I’ve also felt adrift emotionally. For several days poor reception has ... read more

This morning we got up and went back to the wineries we wanted to buy wine from. We ended up getting the dessert wine from Villa Maria, and a 2008 Riesling "M" from Te Whare Ra. We continued north toward Picton and had some time before we needed to board the ferry. We had run out of books, so we found a bookstore (which had the second and third book of the Millenium Triology by Stieg Larsson) and found an internet cafe. We have had a lot of interest in our van, so we're happy about that. Trying to work out details about viewing the van, etc. when we get back north. Then we got on the ferry back over to Wellington. It was a bit smaller than the other one, but we had our sugared ... read more

This morning we got up, showered (it was nice!) and headed south towards Wellington. We are staying in Upper Hutt, about 25km north of Wellington. We stopped by a Home Accessories store and got a metal spatula (since the plastic one melts on the pans) and another duvet innards, that was on a super sale, so now with the both of them in there, hopefully it will keep us warm. The one that came with the van was super thin, and this new one is a medium thickness. Adam said the winter thickness was too much! We drove into Wellington and booked our ferry ride for tomorrow at 1pm. We then went to Te Papa, which is a free museum about New Zealand. We saw the Colossal Squid (which we had watched a program about months ... read more

Being the only American Spicer in NZ, I 'raced' down to Wellington via a twelve hour bus trip and stayed in the nicest hostel I have found, the YHA. Halloween out with Galen, who I hadn't seen in fifteen years was a great time. He put me up for a few days while I explored Wellington, the numerous harbours, steep 'hills', the local art museums and Te Papa - the best national mueseum I have come across - which was actually free. The City Art Gallery was chalked full of Yusama's dot works, which to say the least were bizzarely interesting. On a budget I sought out an organic farm to live on for the next few weeks. After sending out emails to a few, including (by accident) an 'Au Natural' - nudist farm, I managed ... read more

bNovember 8, 2009 Things worked out well for us today, as we had no trouble getting to the trailhead, 15 miles from where we stayed last night. The owner of the motorcamp offered to drive us right to the start for a mere $20. Any transport company would have easily charged $30 per person. With enough food to last three days, we set off into the Tararua mountain range to do the Southern Crossing. These are the same mountains that gave us trouble during our last trip, and they are known to frequently take the lives of trampers. The last two deaths were only a month ago, and they were two locals. So we came prepared to be on top of our game. The track started with a brutal climb from the river in the jungle-looking ... read more

It’s been a while since we last did a blog. We haven’t got much to write about, however we though we would show you some of the eyesores around Wellington… We’re still working hard, saving the pennies for our next big adventures…Julia is still working as a nanny, enjoying the playgrounds and beaches during the weeks, and exploring Wellington at the weekends. Dan on the other hand has become a sales super star with Telecom and is earning heaps of commission. He joins Julia and the boys on his days off for picnics and walks around the clifftops. Other news from our side of the world…we have sold our beloved campervan Joey, and are going to camp our way around the North island, so will be braving tents and wild campsites for 2 months! We have ... read more

Day 5 - Patea to Palmerston North 140km Despite being a relatively straight forward cycle, quite flat and a decent length, it proved to be one of the most challenging days so far. It seemed to take forever, with the route very uninteresting. The previous day we had had the backdrop of the spectacular Mount Egmont whereas day fives route consisted mostly of driving past farm after farm. As the day went on we seemed to be edging towards our destination very slowly, and the final hours approach to Palmerston was not helped by the wind and rain! We arrived at around 6pm, it had been a long day. We spent the night with Lesley and Ian, wonderful hosts. A special mention must be made for Lesleys apple crumble - amazing! Again it was nice ... read more

After a consideration of the alternatives, we bought an Inter City bus pass for the North Island and headed to Waitomo. It was a very different experience to the Greyhound services in Australia and it was like being looked after by a long lost Uncle - with a full explanation of the rules of the vehicle and a fascinating description of how to use a service station. Whilst I am sure there are those who would disagree, there is no reason to visit Waitomo apart from the caves. There are a host of caving options, ranging from the high adrenalin black water caving to the more sedate float along and look at the gloworms. A brief check of the insurance, suggested the former wouldn’t be such a good idea and we opted to float awhile and ... read more

We decided to move on from Nelson on Saturday as it was raining all day and there was little prospect of an improvement for a few days. We had a fairly hairy drive along Queen Charlotte Drive, with Lys clinging tightly to her arms rests, but we arrived in one piece and saw some beautiful views of the Sound on the way. We stayed at the ferry port of Picton that night and headed south for Blenheim because Lys had found out about some Stock Car Racing that afternoon. It was the NZ national championships. The sun was baking hot, as per the forecast and we spent most of the day there. No pictures for you as we used video and I haven't worked out how to upload that to the blog. It was fairly exciting ... read more
