As I outlined earlier - today (yesterday) was a travel day 4 plus hour drive from Mt. Cook to Christchurch then a plane to Wellington and shuttle bus across town to the rent-a-car facility to pick up another car and drive to Wanganui. 14 hours total. If you want to fantisize about driving really fast come here where distance is metric. the speed limit is 100K (60 mph) I was driving 120 and 140 at times. Not that that isn't a little fast at home. ... read more

4 February 2011 This morning was pencilled in as one for a lie in since we had Nelson in our sights for tonight's stop and we knew that it was just under 100km away (a helpful sign just across of the road from the campsite told us that) - there was therefore no hurry to get moving in the morning. The trouble was that our bodies seem to rather like early rises and we were therefore awake at the usual time of 6.30am. Since we weren't in a rush, we executed a leisurely morning tea routine, probably played a couple of hands of Monopoly Deal and then set out on our way. I dimly recalled that, as I was drifting off to sleep last night, Gregg said something about how wonderful it would be if ... read more

Monday 29th November 2010 (Wellington) Today we were shopping, not for your usual NZ items such as Jade or an All Blacks jersey, but for Smurf costumes to celebrate Rita’s Birthday. 9 of us scoured the various cheap shops and charity shops where we bought lots of blue face paint and white outfits with pillowcases for hats. We managed to sort our costumes out before the others, so we hit Te Puia museum an hour before closing, where we saw the giant squid and whale skeleton. Time to paint the town blue... A dozen of us got ready in the Irish girls’ room, which after an hour or so had a blue tint we all hoped management wouldn’t notice. Smurfs hit the hostel bar with many amused looks from the people around and after several drinks ... read more

I checked out of YHA Wellington with a sense of profound relief. Sue had been kind enough to offer me a ride to Palmerston North, so I'd cancelled my Wellington-to-Palmerston-North bus ticket. I just won't use that part of my bus pass. Sue drove me first to an impressive overlook in the Rimutaka Hills, and then to the Fell Engine Museum. Fell Engines turned out to be small steam locomotives used to provide additional horsepower on a steep grade. The two-story museum included models of the settlements at both ends of the slope, with the higher village, of course, on the second floor. An unusually good documentary film was shown as an introduction to the collection. It explained how the engines worked, and in particular how the trains were kept braked and in control on the ... read more

After leaving the glacier we headed north along the west coast of the South Island stopping at Greymouth and then Westport. Our overnight at Greymouth was right on the beach, beautiful sunset to enjoy. At Westport we took a short hike to a fur seal colony on rocky outcroppings. Babies born in November so got to see some young seals as well as adults. Ate lunch at a wonderful seaside cafe and then took another short walk to an old lighthouse. We then headed inland going through Murchison and then heading north to the Nelson area. Our stay at Murchison was just for one night. Huge yellow jackets swarmed our RV (guess they liked the bright green) so didn't even sit outside. Took a short hike the following day up the mountain to see some the ... read more

Also weiter zur nahe gelegenen Stadt Nelson.

"So, has anyone got any questions about England?" I enquired of the year 1/2 class that I was teaching that day. I find this question a good introduction to the day, and it usually follows a familiar format. "Yes I have been on a red double decker bus. No, the Queen doesn't tend to invite members of the public into Buckingham palace for tea. No, I don't think I do know your aunty Sheila, even if she does live in England.....". An angelic, shy-looking boy meekly raised his hand. "Matthew.....are you bald?" The answer to that question will remain in that classroom, but let's just say 3 years in the teaching profession and the associated stresses haven't been conducive to good hair retention! I write this in Picton, having just arrived on the ferry after completing ... read more

Well, it turns out it's been a while since I last wrote this- almost 4 months in fact! I guess a lot has been going on but it just seemed like normal life really, just that I've been living my normal life at the other side of the world, far away from all you lovely people! But now I've finished up at work and tomorrow morning, just after the rugby finishes, I head off to do my last tiny bit of travelling. Then I get back to beautiful but cold and miserable Scotland on the 3rd of December (Flags ready?!). So, I really should do a bit of an update on whats been going on in Wellington the last 4 months! I'll warn you all now though- this is going to be a bit of a ... read more

We seem to have had a problem with our Tongariro Blog so hope you have received it although some of you seem to have received it three times – hope you are not too bored!! We had a long drive today heading down to Wellington for our interisland ferry crossing to South Island. Our visit to the North has ended already and we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay having met some lovely people on the way around. Everyone says that South island is better but we must say that the North has been good and will take some beating. We have allowed two days to explore the area around Wellington before our crossing on Saturday morning at 0830 hours. We took a scenic route down from the mountains travelling through many small towns and stopping at ... read more
