Wellington New Zealand - Day 1 -- After our road trip from Auckland to Wellington we settled at Brandon and Andrea’s in the heart of the city.. B lives at the top of Cuba street, which would be similar in comparison to Queen St Toronto- A funky eclectic mix of people and shops, the street runs down to the bay in many different directionsà Korey and I packed a bag and walked around for hours, getting our bearings, at this point we are becoming more comfortable with being abroad and are falling into a routine were we pack, travel, explore, waste money, and take in the sights!.. Notes about Wellington: the city is very clean and organized to me, and the architecture is bold… there are many more boutique shops than I anticipated , but the ... read more

ridiculously early start (4.20am!) and we were off to Picton to catch the first Interislander Ferry of the day. We didn't plan on getting up that early when we booked the morning crossing but hadn't seen the 5.25am check in for the six thirty trip...or the half hour drive to the docks. After that we were glad that the 3 hour crossing was completely calm as we had heard that it can be a bit choppy, so we managed to doze all the way and woke up in Wellington. Wellington is a 'proper' city and much livelier than anywhere else we have seen here so far. There are lovely quayside areas with coffee shops, rollerbladers and people bustling by. We watched a few kids try their hand at water walking (basically big inflatable hamster balls ... read more

Hello again, We spent another couple of days in Taupo, seeing some of the local sights. We bathed in the hot springs beside the Waikato River. The river water mixed with the spring water and you could find the spot where the temperature was just right! We had planned a longish walk from here but decided to just relax instead (it’s been a stressful two month holiday!). Further downstream we also visited the Aratiatia Rapids - an odd spot where water is released periodically from a dam - making the docile rapids spring to life. We also enjoyed a dinner overlooking Lake Taupo (pasta cooked up on the camping stove!). Before we left Taupo we found a spare hour or two to panic over my (John’s) missing wallet…even popped into the police station before predictably ... read more

The end of our time is Wellington has come, so as its the last time we will have easy access to a computer we will give all you avid readers a little update of our final days in the Capital. Julia went away with her parents between Christmas and New Year to see a little bit of the North island, and even bullied the whole family into jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane to do yet another skydive. She went black water rafting in the Waitomo Caves, visited a living Maori thermal village, and finished the expedition off with another quad biking trip. While Julia was away having a whale of a time, Dan was slaving away in order to be able to put some food on the table. Christmas in retail means long hours, ... read more

Hobbit Wanders Part 4: Tararua Hobbits Did you know that E A R T H can be re arranged to read H E A R T ? On this over night tramp in the Tararua mountain range we have to change plans to avoid spending a night without shelter in the alpine, do a river crossing as the track has been washed out, and I have my first go at fire writing. I love the lightness of my soul when I am tramping. All the daily demands of urban life are shed, like dirty clothes and I am free to just walk in the woods. Wandering like a hobbit. Not long after setting out, it begins to rain. Our spirits are not dampened by the drizzle though. In fact , the rain that seeps through the ... read more

Arriving on a damp day in Welly with mozzy bites all over us we were in high spirits...) However in tru Briitish style we picked oursleves up and headed for the Wellywood backpackers, sure not to attract the low lifes of society! Located in the heart of the city it was great to leave the van behind for the next 5 days, although I am missing its pungent aroma (I swear its Lisas socks it doesnt matter how often I wash them, is a mans work never done 'rant over'). We decided we needed a bit of culture and as I couldnt find any motor racing we had to go to the museum. The Te Papa museum had a special exhibition highlighting what happened to Pompeii in Italy. Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for all the lovely cards and presents :) We hope everyone at home had a great Christmas with lots of snow! Our Christmas day was very different to what we are used to...it began with opening presents and our stockings from Santa, then we headed off to the beach for a paddle in the sea. We were planning to have a picnic on the beach but it was very windy, so we ate that in the car instead. In the afternoon we headed home, and spent the rest of the day out in the garden playing frisbee and lounging around, then had a huge barbequed feast thanks to our housemate, Scott. We both got some great presents, lots of lovely English chocolate (the chocolate here isn't very nice), a book all ... read more

The Former Mike Brockie Arrives in Wellington You stood in the newsroom like a messenger from a sunnier land. Between a climb on a gravel road in the King Country and a tail-wind out of Lower Hutt you’d pedalled away a few decades of worry. All you carried - the sun lightly on your back, a mind clean and clear as a back-country moon. You were a modern who’d made the epic journey - two and half thousand kilometres with only yourself for company. The news you brought to us was you - sun-filled, travelling at your own speed. You were the intro, the copy, the story. Richard Langston This poem arrived in my email the day I returned home to Auckland. It is written by friend and colleague Richard Langston , who has just had ... read more
