This morning we went black water rafting. It was a lot of fun. We got all decked out in a wetsuit, a wetsuit jacket, wetsuit booties, boots, and a helmet with lamp. It wasn't very easily to get around with all that constricting gear on. We learned a little safety, and then headed out to the cave. We picked up an innertube, and got to practice jumping backwards into the water. It wasn't too scary (the anticipation was a little nerve wracking), but I got a lot of water up my nose. After that we moved from the river we were practicing on into the actual cave. It was a pretty short entrance, so lots of ducking for taller people. The water was cold, but not really so bad. We walked around some, and then we ... read more

This morning as we were leaving our site, we talked to a guy who had camped there. He was hiking the Highway, which was super impressive. We continued on the Forgotten World Highway and went through the Moki Tunnel, which was built in 1936 This one-way 180m tunnel is also known as ‘Hobbits Hole’, and the site where unique giant crab fossils were found during construction. It was really cool. We then went on a bunch of unsealed road to get to Mt. Damper falls, which is the North Island's highest waterfall. It was pretty cool...even if we couldn't see the whole thing (just the top part). The walk to and from the waterfall was a little tough because it had rained a lot, so there was a lot of squishy ground, mud puddles and sheep ... read more

Today we visited the Waitomo caves to see the cave-dwelling glow worms. This is a very special trip where guided groups walks down a series of stairways passing though a number of chambers into the limestone cave and there board a boat. The guide then pulls the boat along fixed lines in total darkness except for the glow worms attached to the ceiling of the cave. The glow worms give off a bright blue bio luminesence that attracts mosquitoes and small moths into the caves. They become entangled in the glow worm's mucus fishing lines and are eaten by the worms. Quite bizarre. Eventually the boat exits the cave system at river level. Unfortunately taking pictures of the glow worms is forbidden. Our quest to find a live Kiwi was achieved today at the Kiwi House ... read more

It has been a very eventful last couple of days! Sunday night I had a change of plans, and instead of going straight to Wellington like I thought, I decided to grab a ride with two of my new homies (one of whom owns a van) to the region North of Auckland. We were planning on leaving Monday night but neither Will or Janelle could break their reservation at our hostel, Bamber House, so we couldn’t leave until Tuesday morning. Monday night was miserable- there wasn’t enough room in Bamber House for me to stay, so I ended up at a less-friendly hostel down the road. The actual hostel was fine, there were a few familiar faces, but I was miserable. I walked there with my backpack on in the pouring rain thinking of how much ... read more

Another rainy day was what we woke up to but we all hopped on the bus to drive to a tiny place called Waitomo. There is not much to the town but motels and hotels because this is where all the caves are. In the 1800's the caves were open to the public and now guides take people into the caves to see the famed glow worms and do some adventure caving. Our driver dropped us off in Waitomo and we had to sign a medical form. That's never a good sign haha. But I did it anyways. Meike and I had decided to do the Tumu Tumu black water rafting adventure. Our small group was taken by van to a building in the middle of no where basically to get geared up. For those of ... read more

18th May 2009 We traveled on from our overnight stop and reached Waitomo caves. These are special caves as they contain an abundance of glow worms. First up was a look around the caves museum where we found out about the life cycle of a glow worm and the history of the caves. A tour of the caves was next up where our eccentric tour guide told us about various cave formations. We then descended down into the depths and boarded a boat on the river running through the cave. Above us were tiny star-like blobs covering almost all areas of the caves ceiling. As the water level was really high we felt a little too close for comfort to there "sticky, poisonous strands of silk". The rest of the day was spent traveling to Rotorua. ... read more

05/06/09 Friday Day 294 Cool and cold day today. Got the bus from Sky City at 8.15am. Our bus journey was part of the Great Sights bus tour to Rotorua via Waitomo Caves which was where we were getting off and it included a running commentary by the driver along the way. We got to Waitomo Caves village around 11am and booked one of the cave tours at the information centre right where the bus dropped us. When we asked for directions to our hostel she told us it was 2 kilometres away and with no taxi service we had a bit of a walk. It turned out to be only about 1 kilometre away so it wasn’t too bad. After checking in we headed back into the village to get some lunch. There’s very few ... read more

So back on the fun bus after breakfast for the longest drive (Hopefully) on this North Island to South Island trip. Passing fantastic valleys, hills and forest during the 6 hour journey gave us the home views that the countryside and even scenes out of "Lord of the Rings" which was filmed here in New Zealand. Glow-worms and deep, deep caves Waitomo, in the central North Island, is an area renowned for limestone caves, glow-worms, adventure and fun, and is a place not to be missed. The name Waitomo comes from the Maori wai, water and tomo, hole or shaft. Activities centre around a small village called Waitomo Caves (or simply Waitomo) where the Museum of Caves is the focal point. For more than 100 years the Glow-worm Cave of Waitomo has attracted millions of people ... read more

After another ridiculously early start we headed out to Waitomo for a spot of black water rafting- our original bus driver had told us we had to stay there but once we were on the bus the bus driver said we could go straight to Rotorua and not stay in Waitomo, which was a damn good thing seeing as there were 4 shops and nothing else to do! Black Water Rafting was so much fun- we got all kitted up in wetsuits, shorts, helmets, gum boots and got in the bus to be driven to Ruakuri Cave. When we arrived we were each given a rubber ring type thing (from the wheel of a car) and we stood on this jetty into the river to practise our jumping technique for off the waterfalls in the caves- ... read more

DAY 3 (Feb 8th) We left the bay of islands early and made our way back to Auckland for lunch while we picked up the rest of our tour mates. We added 19 people to fill our bus to 50 for the rest of the trip. Then we continued on to Waitomo. In Waitomo I stayed with three other girls, two Australians and a Canadian. When we arrived many of us went underground cave rafting and glow worm spotting. The glow worms look a lot like stars in the sky in the dark caves. We jumped off a few waterfalls the tallest being about 10 feet. Afterwards we ate soup and bagels while chatting with our tour guides and some of the locals. That night we had a pizza party with every one. Pizza here isn't ... read more
