Today started just like yesterday...in the dark. Sunrise is about 7:30am, so naturally with my always waking early habit, I was up well before then. Today wasn't going to be like yesterday, today I was going Black Water Rafting! (more on that later, and an actual explanation of what it is.) I awoke at 5:30am after what was a fairly bad nights sleep, the bed was comfy enough and no one was snoring, but it was a Saturday night and there was a bit of noise and music coming from outside, it wasn't too bad though and I got enough sleep. I went downstairs to meet the bus at 7am and he took me, and a few other people, down to where the main bus for the day would be picking us up. This bus was ... read more

Today Dom was up at half past 6. Very much cold, and very much still dark. Ate a very quiet breakfast before going outside to wait for the bus. The bus was a bit late, but driven by a very nice english chap, so it was hard to be annoyed. This bus was to take me all the way to Waitomo caves, and then back in the evening, a drive of about 2hours each way. Occupied myself with podcasts on the way, since the scenery was not too much unlike England. On arrival at the caves, I had a bit of a wait before my tour, but it gave me a good chance to wake up properly. The tour began at 11am and was called the Black Abyss. Sounds nice doesnt it! The first stage of ... read more

Day 172 - Monday 10 March Once again I actually like a place but unfortunately its time for me to move on. Its strange that almost everybody we've met had told us the south island is better than the north yet I think the exact opposite. Just goes to show everybody's into different things. Were continuing to head north and today were making our way to the Waitomo caves to see the glowworms there. Way back in Laos Regan had said it was really good so i've been looking forward to it for some time. Theres different trips you can do but were going to do the tubing where you float through the caves on a rubber ring. Arriving mid afternoon we had a couple of hours to kill before our tour but included in the ... read more

In the morning we headed to Te Puia, which is New Zealand's most well known thermal area complete with geysers, bioling mud, a live Maori arts and crafts centre and a Kiwi bird house. We then headed to Waitomo (Wai meaning water, tomo meaning cave). The local caves, hiding under the green Waitomo countryside, are made out of limestones, which is basically very old dead fish (in this case about 40 million years old). The caves would have stayed under the sea if the Australians haden't 'puched the continental plate around' (this was apparently the origins of a famous Rugby competition known as the Bledisloe Cup). However, nowadays, even the Australians come over to marvel at the caves that rainwater has gouged out of the rock. While we were there we decided to do something called ... read more

It’s famous for its Black Water Rafting and Glow-worm. There are a few companies doing the tours. As usual, we looked for the cheapest. As we have some vouchers from tourist leaflet, so we went for Tumu Tumu Toobing of Waitomo Adventures. It’s kind of Black Water Rafting as well ( according to the brouchers) but I have no idea what’s the meaning of Tumu Tumu Toobing. It’s a 4 hours wet trip underground which you can experience the wonderful creation under earth, and the glow worms. It’s damn cold down there, we were equipped with the wet suit which can keep us warm, boots and helmet with lights on it. We were like earthworms, crawling underground and we were wet. The best part is the glow worms. After 1 hour crawling, we looked up and ... read more

Thursday, 28 February 2008 Today was a full tour day starting at 8:15 am. There are only 14 people in our tour group so it is a very nice size, plenty of room in the bus, and everyone seems very nice. Our driver and guide today was Berndt, a German who moved to NZ about 20 years ago. He was very nice and seemed to know the history of Auckland and all of NZ. We started by driving about an hour and a half and then made a stop for “coffee.” Berndt made sure to tell us to get the coffee first, and then head to the bathrooms. The stop was a shop that sold wool goods, had ice cream and other food to buy, and of course had the bathrooms most of the bus needed. ... read more

Hello again! it takes a while to do all this stuff and have been really busy recently sorry! Taupo Right o, we left on our big green bus straight after caving for Taupo (skydive capital - unfortunately too windy so no sky diving!) just before we arrived in taupo we stopped off at Huka falls which is an incredible waterfall discharging over 220,000 litres a second through its narrow channels! After checking in for our hostel which was one of the better ones we pretty much went straight to the hostel bar for a massive night out (a few photos but most of these on facebook). The next day was wasted really too hungover went around town a bit and sat by the pretty lake, nice not to have to get on a bus! Today me ... read more

With Becs S feeling much better we made our way to National Park and back up to the North Island. This was a sobering thought for us as the realisation set in that we only had five more nights in beautiful New Zealand. We arrived late to National Park giving us our first experience of driving in the dark in New Zealand. As the day turned to night we became even more aware of how rural New Zealand is and how alone and in the middle of nowhere you can feel even though you are on the state highway. As we had already walked the Tongariro Crossing we used National Park as a chill out place with the only plan of action being Bec S in search of the perfect Mt Doom picture. The hostel was ... read more

We drove south to Auckland, to pick up the rest of our tourmates. We met them, and soon had a fully packed coach. I sat next to Tara, who is from about an hour north of Sydney. She has worked in Colorado and in Alberta in resort towns, so we had a lot in common. We've hung out a lot, she's great. We arrived in Waitomo where we would be getting right to it with some Black Water Rafting in the Waitomo Caves. We had an awesome group going rafting; Tara, me, Clara, Agnelle, Tenile, Allie, Yvonne, Hesh, Mary, Haley and Nat. Our guides werre named Parker and Chad and they were SO so fun, we loved them. Black Water Rafting is a kind of crazy experience; you are outfitted in a hideous two piece wet-suit, ... read more
