Yesterday I went on an amazing adventure by going underground and exploring some caves in Waitomo. I did it with the Black Water Rafting Company, and they were a really good crew. Check them out: http://www.waitomo.com/ One of our guides, Dan, kinda looked like AC Slater from "Saved by the Bell", only with a Kiwi accent. It was a 5 hour caving experience. We got kitted out with wetsuits and rope harnesses before we made our way out to the cave. We received some brief training on how our repelling gear (absailing gear for you Brits) works, and then we headed for the hole. I had to work my way through a tight opening and then it opened up enough for me to lower myself down to the bottom. Our next challenge was to ride a ... read more

Tues 8th Jan: Left on new Stray bus to rural village of Waitomo, famous for its caves and glowworms. There are several crazy caving activties to choose from but with my sensible hat on, I chose the sedate 'Spellbound' option. We got transported to the cave by minibus, then wandered down the path to the cave entrance, put on our very attractive hard hats and then, in we went. We walked along a windy path until we reached the boat, then hopped in, turned out our head torches and enjoyed the view, literally 1000's off glowworms everywhere! we spent about 30mins in there with it taking about 10mins for your eyes to adjust to the dark. Once outside, and temporarily blinded, we drove to the second cave. We stopped at a shelter on the way for ... read more

Not too much of an early start today......up at 9am for breakfast - superbly presented by Kathy and Allen - and then a bit of blogging and map sorting, and then off. First visit was Waitomo Caves which are famous for ....... being caves !!!!! But ..... there are loads of thing to do here plus glow worms (or magots with radioactive s**t or so we were told). Anyhow, we arrived a liitle bit unsure as to what to do - do we do the full on action tour or the more sedentry tour. As we're getting old (especially me) we thought th emore gently one, but then thought "Oh, sod it" and decided on the full on, get wet, break your leg, black water raft one (which was departing in 10 minutes). We rushed on ... read more

After an early(ish) start of 8.15am we headed to the next big town down of Waitomo. The area is very well known for having lots of underground caves which have glow worms and the thing to do here we are told, is to go Black Water Rafting in them - OK then! Black water rafting basically consists of sitting in a black inner-tube and floating your way through the underground river, a bit like donut rings at Alton Towers. Today we are very organised and book our caving adventure, then go and sort out our accommodation (we are giving the YHA a try tonight) and then be back in time for a quick butty before we go caving - all before 1.30pm! Going down into the cave is a bit tricky as they fit you out ... read more

We set off early today to get a good head start. we went to Raglan centre to have a look around and to check out Wannui Surfers Bay.. Weren't many surfers unfortunately as the waves weren't massive but there were a few! Raglan is a nice surfer town and has a very chilled atmosphere to it - no ones in a rush whcih is always nice! We saw a calf cow legging it down the road as we were driving on .....it's escaping being eaten we decided - the smartest cow in new Zealand! After checking out the surf we drive down to Waitomo Caves with me back behind the wheel. We chose our caving trip - BLACK LABYRINTH woooooooooo!! The caves are famous for their glow worms! And then found some accom at the YHA ... read more

After Raglan headed out to Waitomo, and did a spot of caving, deep underground being the best place to hide with sunburn. Did some abseiling underground in water falls and spent alot of time getting pushed in water by our "guides". The night was in Maketu where the coach stayed with a Mauri family. They give you food and stuff and then put on a show. I was sat right in the middle and got eyeballed by this 8 year old kid during the Haka. I laughed until his massive 22 year old brother pushed up next to him, the eyes they pulled scared the crap out of me. Then the girls all got taught to do some poi stuff, yawn! We got to learn the Haka! Only 4 men though out of the 30 on ... read more

Yup we have been and gone and black water rafted....given that there was so much rain again last night, we decided to seek our entertainment 85ft underground.....and because there was so much rain it was to our benefit, as the underground rapids were wild....... We were strussed up in rather fetching wetsuits, that were wet from the previous trippers, i just hope that mine had not been wee'd in by the previous person wearing it. We then were given helmets with torches, and a big rubber ring, before being given some brief instructions on how to paddle through the rapids. The trip was for three hours through some amazing caves, really tight tunnels, where you had to lie back, and duck out of the way of stalagtites, pulling yourself along by your fingers....therewas watrefalls inside the ... read more

Today's the day, our Blackwater rafting trip. 5 hours of caves, underground rivers, and innertubes. It started with an introduction to the trip and getting fitted out with Wetsuits, gumboots, helmets and harnesses. Next we headed out to the start of our trek to pratice repeling. Next we repeled 35 meters down in to the caves. The trip down started with 5 m out in space then a tight fit through the cave opening. Then it was ~25 m down the cave wall to a platform. Anne went first, then Tony, two other people on the tour, and then Chris. After a short walk we hooked up to a Flying Fox (also known a a zip line) for a fast ride in the dark, dark except for the glow worms. Anne didn't see the glow worms, ... read more

It was an early start this morning, real early but all nine of us made it and were excited for our black water rafting adventure. A weird thing has happened since i've started travelling, whenever I have a few drinks, I have an overwhelming urge to make sure that everybody in the vincity knows who I am, my life story, my future aspirations and my outlook on my life. Now when i'm sober I am fully aware that this is not much interest to anybody but I can’t seem to help myself, this morning this came to bite me. As I was trying unsuccessfully to get into my wetsuit which was the biggest obstacle i’ve ever had to face in my 25 years, I suddenly hear a voice from around the corner, "I know that voice, ... read more

Day started bright and early, which is still not a problem for us - even though we have been crashing at about 9pm each night (i would be out by 8 if dan let me). So we had some breakfast, picked up our car (a supped up Ford something or other - dan took pictures for Steve, i know he will be honored), then hit the road. Drove south on 1 to HAmilton, then picked up 3 to Waitomo. What a drive. The entire day was filled with the most amazing views around every corner. Yes, they were all huge rolling green hills covered in Cows and Sheep and horses, but we loved evey minute of it. No joke, we must have seen thousands of cows and thousands of sheep - it was unreal. At about ... read more
