Hi! We left Russell and the Bay of Islands and headed down to Waitomo Caves, which is South West of Auckland. It was a long drive and we made it to Waitomo Top 10 Campsite by tea time. At our site we met a couple from Australia who were very friendly but would not stop talking! I think we ended up having our dinner at 8pm! The next morning we headed off to Waitomo Caves to explore the glowworm cave. The actual cave wasn't as spectacular as the Jenolan Caves but as we made our way into the darkness we started to see the cave ceiling light up with thousands of glowworms! It was pretty amazing! We made our way down to the river and were told to crouch down, the guide then shone a light ... read more

My journey is going too fast now! The New Zealand bit is nearly over and I haven't been here long enough :( Yesterday went to Hobbiton and had to sign a secrecy thingy cos we saw the new set for the new Hobbit movies. So no photos can be shared.... But it was fab Today went to the glow worm caves and two other great caves - aranui and Rotarui. The stalagtites and stalagmites were absolutely amazing. It's been really sunny too since we got here - so lucky with the weather. Everyone here ways it's incredible that the weather has improved so much since last week! Only San Fransisco to go now and I will be home again - damn thing is too quick. Was cuddling little animals today too and got to see a ... read more

... read more

On our way now to Waitomo caves, the long route. GPS wanted us to see all the beautiful green hills on the way. Long but beautiful. Caves were wonderful with sites of the glowworms on a boat through the caves. Then we went into the rain forest, so lush and into and out of caves. Then a stay at the Big Bird farm just an arms reach outside the room to the animals. Went with the owner on a animal feeding.... read more

Mar. 2 Back in Rotorua Quiet day today. Did take the time to explore the museum here. It was originally build as a thermal/medical spa. The building is very impressive and was well worth the time we spend there. It is currently being restored so half of it was closed. Tomorrow we are off to Taupo. March 3 To Taupo Today is a shorter travel day with our first stop at Wai-O-Tapu, a thermal wonderland. This another of NZ’s many volcanic areas but is a very colorful one. We only had about an hour to take a look, but well worth the run around the grounds. We started with watching a geyser blow its cool. This geyser was enhanced by adding rocks around it to create a cone, and then it is seeded to make it ... read more

Once again, I woke at 5:00. This time, at least, I wasn't gasping for breath; the inhalers had done that much good. I'd planned to get up at 5:30, so there wasn't much harm done. I did some last-minute packing, ate breakfast, left messages for Jim on Chatzy, and was at the bus stop by 7:15. To my delighted surprise, the Rotorua-Auckland trip went perfectly. I got my favorite seat on the bus (left front), and there were never more than eleven passengers so we were all pleasantly uncrowded. My shoulder was well braced, not least because the driver was very firm about my wearing a seatbelt. I could barely fit into the belt, but I could fit, so I wore it. The driver began his commentary by referring to Rotorua as "this little corner of ... read more

Wednesday 24th November 2010 (Rotorua – Waitomo) We had an adrenalin filled morning on our way out of Rotorua – Richard went Zorbing at the worlds original Zorbing centre where they threw him down a ZIG ZAG hill in a large ball filled with water. It only lasted about 30 seconds, but Joanne managed to take a few hundred photos of him while testing the ‘continuous’ function on her new camera – looking at them after looked more like a film from a flicker book. Just 2 minutes down the road we were given 30 minutes at adrenalin junkie heaven where they had a bungy jump, bungy swing, schweebing (a self powered recumbent bicycle in a bubble which you race around a monorail style track) an air powered skydiving freefall simulator and super fast jet ... read more

Ilona: we start walking down the boring road again with heavy bags and geeky walkingsticks. even though we discovered that walking is absolutly shit, its still way better then being around unfriendly bitter Bryce. Richard is the brave one hwo dares holding his thumb up in order to catch a lift, im trying to look cool and not bothered, car by car is speeding by on the little road, it feels like strolling down the auto bahn. and then it happends. a silver grey ford is stopping, we run towards the car and try to squeeze all gear and sticks and hats in. well in the car there is a brazilian woman closer to her 40, she introduced herself as Roberta and then we heard the tires screaming as she drove off with fresh meat for ... read more

We had an uneventful trip to San Francisco where we met our grandniece Paige. After 3 movies, several cat naps and 13 hours we landed in Auckland, NZ. We flew on Air New Zealand which has very nice service and excellent food. Reminded me of the service we had on Air France when we went to Italy in 2001. We let San Francisco at 7:45 PM on Dec. 31, they served champagne to everyone when the plane was in the time zine for midnight. We then landed at 5:55 AM of Jan. 2 having skipped Jan. 1 completely. The hour change between NZ and NV is only about 4 or 5 hours, but the day is different. How confusing can that be. We picked up our van without any problems. We are not into high visibility ... read more
