Today we left Taupo and headed south. For half the day anyways. We didn't make a plan on what we wanted to do but we all just wanted to leave Taupo. We went to Naiper, stopped for lunch and then kept driving. We stopped at the place with the longest name in New zealand and posibbly the world. I am not even going to try to spell but you can try to say it if you want. I have no Idea how it is said. We left there and headed to Palmerston North. It didn't seem like there was much goign on there so we kept driving north and ended up in Wangarie. We stayed there for the night and check on the weather for tomorrow. It siad it was going to be nice so we ... read more

From Kaikoura I went to Blenheim, the wine region. It was a scorching day and the sky was soooooo blue, it looked like it had been photoshopd! Went straight to i-site and booked a 3/4 day wine, distillery and oils/preserves day.....oh dear. So drop bags at place I'm staying that is actually a vineyard and they accept guests, so had a glass of wine (should mention here due to band had so far that day eaten soap on route, a biscuit/cookie and had 3 cups of chai latte), then guide picks me up....he had the complexion of a man who likes his wines and soon we were off. Picked up an Irish guy travelling around who knew alot about wine, it was then I had a feeling that I was going to dissappoint/embaress my mother and ... read more

Continuing Where was l when l interrupted by Nancy. I remember - we had found this cache in Clive Square and along with the instructions about how to find the cache was also information about the square itself. In particular it told us about the local gardener whose name we found out was Kyle. He obviously knew about the cache and wasn't surprised to see people walking around with a GPS. Kyle was a font of knowledge about the square and he and Nancy had a long conversation about the exotic plants he was tending. The square also had a sort of chime, bell sort of thing which used to play 4 tunes every 30 minutes and included Greesleaves and Faere Jacque (my French has never been any good). It was obvious to us that Kyle ... read more

There are some thing you always have to do, even on holiday in paradise. Thats Right - the washing. Because we had been travelling for two weeks we decided (well Nancy did) to do some washing and cleaning of the van. The facilites on these Parks are first class - lots of washing machines and drying. All done and dusted in very short time. Time to walk into Napier the Art Deco capital of the world. This building desgn all happened of course following the Magnitude 7 earthquake of February 1931 when some 157 people lost their lives. The city which stands on the East coast of New Zealand's North Island and Hawkes Bay. On our one full day in Napier manged to pack in a lot of activities. We went on our customary long walks ... read more

After packing in the morning, we took another look at the screw lodged in our tire. The park mechanical person, figured removing it would cause an immediate flat and that it would likely be fine for some time, but we figured we should get it fixed soon. Unfortunately, all the repair places we passed on the way out of town were closed on Sunday so we headed for the highway out of town, thinking we would stop in the next town to see if we could find some place. We didn't get more than about 5 minutes down the highway when were here the tell tale sounds of a tire going flat and pulled over. As we have a Automobile Association membership, we called in the flat rather than trying to figure out the jack set ... read more

When we got up at 6am I gave the shuttle company a call to find out the latest weather report; it wasn’t good. The up to date report said there would be rain showers that could turn heavy. The guy on the phone didn’t sound optimistic. We decided that it wasn’t worth paying $40 each for the shuttle, plus paying for hire of waterproofs, hiking boots and everything else if in an hour or two we’d be turned back. We decided to get back in bed and change our plans for the day. We decided to use our spare day to go to Napier, the Hawkes Bay wine region. We’d wanted to go there all along but had run out of time so had cut it out of our itinerary. I called the i site in ... read more

Day 553 (02.10.08) Having given back our van in Christchurch due to the prices going up in preparation for the approaching summer we thought we'd probably get the bus around the north island but as we'd looked into it nothing really jumped out at us that seemed to suit our plans/travelling style/price range so we weren't really sure what to do. We love the flexibility that a car can bring so we looked into it and managed to find a really cheap deal so booked it up without thinking twice. They collected us at the hostel and with a quick stop at the office to sort out the bills etc. we were back on the road again and headed for Napier up on the east coast, a city blessed with the most sunshine hours in the ... read more

"My chocolate pudding has got the same recipe, but I make it a bit different, it's better."

It was Jackys influence that made us visit Napier, but I have to admit that when I heard about the wine tours I was swayed myself (obviously for the wine knowledge I would gain!). Napier is a city but appears more like a small town from the 1930's. Having suffered a major earthquake followed by severe sweeping fires the place was replanned and rebuilt by 4 archetects with an interest in Art Deco. It was designed so well and so in keeping with each other and although it went through a period of degradation today due to the tourism industry getting behind it they have festivals, "tea & cake" type day on the lawn, antique car rallys & generally any opportunity to live it up 1930's style'. Jacky was in her element and seemed to have ... read more

A three day weekend calls for a road trip to Napier. Three-quarters of the team that rolled to the south island last year made the trek this time (Marcos, Sarah and me). It was a seven hour drive with a few stops along the way, including a café well outside the suburbs of Auckland that served water with coffee flavoring for lattés, a hydro power dam and swing bridge, the driving range on Lake Taupo (floating barge with chance to win $5000 for holes in one), a waterfall and finally Napier. We pulled into Napier around 4pm Saturday afternoon. We hit the Opossum shop and museum, checked out the world famous art deco architecture in town and prepared to go out and watch the rugby equivalent of the super bowl - the New Zealand team handily ... read more
