As usual we set off early and without breakfast in order to make a good start with the driving. The trip up to Paihia was due to take about 3.5 hours, but Nick had given us a number of suggestion of places to stop on the way. We first stopped at the historic village of Puhoi, which was founded by Bohemians in 1863. There we found a delightful little tea room in Puhoi Cottage where the owner made us very welcome and explained the history of the place. He specialised in cream teas, so even thought it was breakfast time, a number of had a huge scone, strawberry jam and thick cream. Pressing on we next stopped at a Dutch Cheese Shop “the last cheese shop for miles”! The shop was stuffed with all sorts of ... read more

Napier was very nice. Mission Wine Estates beautiful. A fantastic walk along the ocean cliffs, in a hurry to beat the incomming tide. Again a stay at a caravan park with BBQ. Coffee in a garden setting.... read more

STILL HERE!!! lol... I'm sick of the sight of fruit!! Well.... Actually, it's not so bad. It's kind of become like a little community. Everyone is in the same boat, so we're all trying to save money to move on. The weather has been really good, and most evenings we get together for a bbq and a few beers. I'm really enjoying it. Most of the time it doesn't feel like work. ... read more

I've spent the last week or so working. I didn't have much luck to begin with. I stayed in a hostel because i was told the guy that runs it helps you find work. This didn't work out for me, so i took to good old fashioned cold calling. Turns out this was the right choice. I've been working ever since. There's a couple of farms between Napier and Hasting, sleeping in my van, and sneaking into hostels to use there wash rooms! lol shhhh.... So i'm not spending a lot! It's been quite hard work, but i've met some really nice people! Sorry this is not more of an interesting blog, but this is my boring time to earn some money!! lol... ... read more

Today, having finally realized that I was at the ocean, I did what I'd usually do there and got up to watch the sunrise. There was a belt of cloud on the horizon, so I did not actually get to see the sun rise out of the sea, but the cloud colors were striking and it made a good start to the day. At 9 a.m., I walked down the seaside path in the other direction, away from the historic Art Deco district. The first place I encountered was Marineland of New Zealand. I had, actually, seen and investigated Marineland a couple of days ago; it's right across the street, diagonally, from the YHA. Marineland was closed indefinitely to the public in 2008. New Zealand's Department of Conservation objected to the keeping of dolphins in captivity. ... read more

I've settled comfortably in to YHA Napier, as I did into Tailor-Made Tekapo and YHA Te Anau and the Kiwi's Nest. I still have moments of acute distress when I think ahead to Rotorua and Gisborne, but overall I'm a lot calmer. I really like this YHA; it's been quiet well before midnight, and the staff is friendly. They've also, as I found this morning, got a really great laundry room. I've said so much about laundry disasters in this blog that I think I ought to mention that YHA Napier's washers and dryers are clean, fully functional, and effective. I breezed through my wash with no trouble at all. When the laundry was finished, I went out for a walk along the path beside the beach. (Walking on the beach itself is not practical; it ... read more

I slept well, though with the aid of the very last of my Benadryl, and woke rather groggily at 7:30 a.m. I went out to walk by the ocean (for the YHA is across the street from the South Pacific), and when I returned I had a wonderful surprise. The lady I'd asked to pray for me had come to the YHA while I was gone, and left a package for me. It proved to contain a 2011 calendar, a keychain, and several postcards of New Zealand. There was also a friendly note, wishing me a happy stay in Napier and safe travels onward. I was delighted. Somehow it made the whole trip feel safe and happy again. I decided to go sightseeing. I had noticed a mention of Art Deco Walking Tours on my ... read more

It was exhausting but simple to drag my luggage the four or five blocks to the Criterion. My first impression was cautiously favorable. It was certainly a lovely old building, right in the Art Deco district of Napier. The lounge was decorated in that style, as were the bathrooms. And the manager was kind enough to carry my bags upstairs for me. My bed was hard, but my room was rather nice, with a washbasin and a lovely small-paned window with a pretty view of the art-deco district. It looked out over a pedestrian mall, so for once automobile traffic was not a problem. I thought, hesitantly, that I might be happy here once I had settled down a bit. I went shopping; the supermarket was closer than I'd feared, too. Things began to go downhill ... read more

Finally some rest... and Napier English (Anouschka) 16th January 2011 Today we were in for some rest. Yes: shocking, maybe we’re getting old! We decided to book one more night at our beautiful spot in Tongariro National Park. Time for sleeping in, doing some laundry and tidying up the van (for those of you who are familiar with the day-to-day state of our rooms back home, this should not be surprising). Later in the day the sky cleared. As a lot of muscles were aching after yesterday’s workout, it was time to loosen them up a little bit. The camping ground is in the centre of the national park, so it wasn’t hard to find a nice walk close by. We walked to ‘Silica Springs’, another of those nicely (in this case: red/brownish) colored water springs. ... read more
