I had been lucky to pick the last sunny day for my Mail Boat trip in Picton as the weather closed in and I ended up in a freak tornado in Wellington. I got over the trauma by doing some marvellous wine and food tours in Napier. I had a peaceful morning wandering around the shops in Picton, including a bead shop where you could buy all the elements and then sit and build your own jewellry with the help of the shop assistants. It was a very pretty shop with bottles of beads in the full rainbow of colours and loads of already made-up necklaces and bracelets. I imagine it would have been a wonderful place for young girls to hold their birthday parties. I went in to buy a simple black cord-style necklace as ... read more

So after our epic drive we arrived in Napier in the evening and found a lovely motel on the beach front with great views over the ocean. The moon was fll that night and we took a moonlit walk on the beach (well isnt that what you are suposed to do on your honeymoon) We decided to see the place by bike the next day so we hired a tandem. This was a great way to see the town as it is very flat and not very big so we rode up and down the beachfront and explored the area. We also managed to see inside the aquarium, which the coucil has decided to close to the public even though all the animals are still there, so we saw some penuins and seals too. There was ... read more

2/14/2010 Hearts and Flowers in Napier Today we’re in Napier New Zealand. When we first booked our shore excursions last Oct they didn’t have any listed for Napier yet and by the time they did we decided we might like a day without one since there were 6 New Zealand Port days in a row. So we slept in a bit and then headed up to breakfast and to do our daily puzzles. When we returned to the room I found a surprise of a dozen roses waiting for me from John for Valentine’s Day. This was in addition to the lovely heart necklace he’d already given me when we had our Valentines Dinner in the Pinnacle. We then took the shuttle into town and did a bit of shopping at the Opossum Store which had ... read more

Day 11 of my trip has a clear focus on nature and the creation of New Zealand. Having stayed in Rotorua, we still have a few sights to see nearby and on our next leg to Napier, 224 km away. The first stop is the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, just on the edge of Rotorua. This is as old Maori meeting place (the name means something like the gathering place for the war parties) and the local tribe have done a lot to maintain, supplement and manage the site. After having been greeted by our guide and given a little introduction to the project, the local history, and attempts to set up a Maori craft centre of excellence for wood carving and weaving, we walked towards the valley where the sight just relegates any of these admirable ... read more

Oct 25 - November 15 Ahh, Napier Prison, my home for the last 3 weeks. This has been the most relaxing 3 weeks of my trip so far. Yet, it’s the first 3 weeks that I’ve actually worked. For 2 hours a day I had guided tourists - mainly older adults in their 60s - 70s, but some backpackers as well, through the currently decommissioned but haunted prison. Napier Prison first opened in 1862 and remained open until 1993 before it was shut down. It briefly opened as a hostel in 2002, but that was closed this past July. So the only ones living in the prison were the staff - all of whom are backpackers, and most of whom (myself included) were working for accommodation only. So it was nice and homey- well as homey ... read more

Napier 11-4-09 - Wednesday we arrived late afternoon in Napier on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Without a doubt, Napier is one of the loveliest cities we’ve been to since landing in New Zealand. We had Jeannie’s address and since she lived atop Lighthouse Road …. well we figured to find our way to the highest point in the city, close to the edge of the of the bluff and we should find her house. Sure enough we worked our way to the highest point and we finally found Lighthouse Road where she lives. Her daughter Emma greeted us as she returned from piano practice. We got settled in our room with all our stuff and awaited Jeannie and Magnus to return from Wellington. Not too long after we got in, Jeannie arrived, ... read more

As soon as I set foot in Napier, I realised that my mum, a lover of all things 1930s, would fall in love with it here. Most of Napier was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and had to be rebuilt and therefore most of the architecture is in the art deco style, which the town continues to embrace. Its an absolutely delightful little town, with wonderful examples of art deco wherever you look, it's almost like you've stepped back in time. We did our own little tour, taking photos galore of all the wonderful buildings and stopping off for a cuppa and slice of carrot cake to sustain us before another little drive up to Taupo.... read more

Napier is a small city with a friendly, relaxed vibe. The city boasts the world's finest collection of Art Deco buildings which came about as a result of two and half minutes on the morning of February 3rd, 1931 when the city was rocked by the biggest earthquake in New Zealand's recorded history, measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale. The centre of the city was reduced to a heap of smouldering rubble which gave the citizens of Napier a blank canvas and when construction got underway all the buildings reflected the then popular Art Deco movement. Today these buildings are sadly more or less obscured by the huge awnings over shop fronts. New buildings are simply ugly square boxes. The foresight of their predecessors appears to be lacking in the town planners of today, this is ... read more

So, just a quick pit stop in Napier before heading off further North. It's quite a way from Wellington, so an early start again. More scenic stop offs at waterfalls and the like, but a cracking stop at the Tui Brewery. Now, it was still morning, but part of the deal was you got 3 pints for $2 which is ridiculously cheap. You are only given 45 minutes to finish them, so no hanging around. Me & Roy were bored for the last 20 minutes having quaffed our quota and refusing to pay for more. Good stuff tho, the lager is shocking, but the dark ale is great! We arrived in Napier around 3pm and checked in. Straight back out for a look. Really nice seaside town which was destroyed in the 30's by a huge ... read more
