Leaving windy Wellington at 5.36 pm they advised us to take sea sick pills just Incase apparently the seas are expected to be rough out of the bay The pilot left the ship early or it would be too dangerous je is following behind to give instructions  Anyway apart from wind Wellington has a cable car that goes almost vertically up the side of the hill and a fantastic museum including a live earthquake room which is rather rocky  There version of Harrods has all the expensive stuff including a doorman to welcome you. ... read more

On Tuesday 28th December Rob, Alex’s friend from home came to meet with us, he got a bus up from Wellington and arrived at 3.30am. On the Wednesday the 4 of us went to Hennessey’s for Pie and Pint, a large Sheppard’s pie and a pint of lager for $10! Then we went to the Pig and Whistle for drinks. On Thursday 30th December me, Tracey, Alex and Rob left to go to Napier for New Year. We arrived about 6.30pm at Toad Hall Backpackers, was ok but wasn’t Crash! We went out for some food and a few drinks and then back to the hostel. On New Years Eve we spent the day having a walk around town and then drinks on the terrace of the hostel, in the evening we went to the bar ... read more

Day 13 Monday We had read a bit about Napier in the guide books and so knew that there was a bit to see that was “Art Deco”. However, the pre-information did not prepare us for the spectacle we encountered today. It was like going back to the thirties or going on to a film set. All the buildings were built and decorated in Art Deco style. Guides in suitable dress were showing tourists round (a couple of cruise ships had arrived so we just followed a guide book – we were conducting our own tour). You could also have a ride about town in a veteran car. Starting at the Art Deco shop we were soon exploring different buildings, looking at the interiors and the way they were built – all in similar style. The ... read more

Day 12 Sunday Up and off on the road again. Heading for Napier but stopped on the way at Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. A 3 km walk around natural bubbling pools of mud and water. The colours ranged from yellow and green (sulphur) red (ferrous) to purple (manganese). The steam coming off the pools was at times quite suffocating. Arrived at Napier at about 4.30pm and booked into our apartment which includes a kitchenette with washing machine and tumble dryer– joy! We’ve been away 12 days and we were running out of clothes. 3 loads later and we found a great little Turkish cafe to have a meal. I am writing this at 8.45 and I’m ready for bed – how sad is that?! ... read more

We headed out of New Plymouth after two weeks. We decided to head for Taupo-nice lake, thermal pools, waterfalls, and rapids! On our way we stopped at a brewery and had a few tastes of organic beer its not bad... we miss having beer made from wheat not hopps. After the brewery we see a sign for a waterfall off the highway-LETS GO! Its was 47km off the highway, but with all the twists, turns, and hills to climb on the gravel that soon turned into 4x4 track it took us wayy over an hour to get there. Once we got to the sign we ended up having to walk 20 min to get to the falls. By this time it is raining out so we get our nice new rain and wind proof jackets on ... read more

His Name was Brian and he want to go Hanggliding with his wife Sophia. We helped them to pull out the Car and they invited us to stay in their House in Masterton. 25 04 2010 For some reason we both woke early and had a cup of tea. After a lovely shower we were packed up and ready to roll by 0800 hours. What’s going on, this is the weekend. In any case we had about 400 kms to get to Napier our destination. We left Wellington with the grey cloud and wipers on and headed north. It was a long way but the weather improved as we got further north ending up in bright sunshine and having to change into shorts. We stopped at Featherston and the old bill had shut the road for the ANZAC celebrations to ensue. The route was highway 2 all the way. The scenery in the north started off quite dramatic as we left Wellington suburbs with a steep mountain climb ... read more

After a quick trip to The Turangi Library for some free internet, I headed east for a scenic 2 hour drive across New Zealands Central Plateau, thru the Ahimanawa Range and over the Maungaharuru Mountains, to the coastal town of Napier. I was anxious to keep moving south, but had heard good things, and I'm glad I made the trip. Napier sits in the Hawkes Bay Region, and is known for its vineyards, fruit orchards, and sheep farms as well as being the Art Deco Capital of New Zealand. In 1931 the city was destroyed by a massive earthquake (7.9), leaving much of the town to be completely rebuilt. Art Deco was the style of the times and Napier has kept much of its historic center intact making it an attraction for architecture buffs from around ... read more

Staat ook bekend als art deco capital of the world.
