Made our way through the streets of Wellington for the route to Napier. Great double laned highway that we came one car away from being nailed in a radar trap. We were to see the major difference between the North and South Island as we made the day's road trip. Here, you pass through a town every 10 minutes and everything slows down but in the South, you pass through a town every hour. At this rate, it would take us forever to get to Napier. I started to long for the wide open pastures and mountains. There was intermitten rain and decent wind gusts among the grey clouds and pointy brown hills ran along the highway. Soon we were along the coast and lots of road construction. The Tasman Sea was pretty calm even with ... read more

A nice clear day, so we bought the leaflet and followed the Art Deco walking trail. Napier was virtually destroyed by an earthquake and following fire in 1931. The authorities showed amazing foresight and had the town rebuilt according to the then fashionable Art Deco style, The result is a town which looks good - especially if you look up above ground level (unfortunately modern signage desecrates the former glory). After the walk we headed to the beach for a stroll. We went to the town centre in search of ice cream (and a haircut for Jen). We went for a short drive late afternoon to see the Art Deco classic ‘Tobacco Factory’. ... read more

Left Jaine/Alex’s after a leisurely breakast including a stroll around the garden. We topped at Mount Bruce wildlife centre which is a splendid stop. They protect and breed rare NZ birds. The birds are housed in large aviaries set in a remnant of ancient forest. There are stitchbirds, kaka and takahe. Thee are streams with huge eels. However the highlight was the nocturnal Kiwi House were night and ay are reversed so that the iwis ae active during the day. Once our eyes had accustomed to the low lighting we had a fantastic view of a rummaging kiwi. It was superb. As we continued our journey (in drizzle) the landscape changed to gently folded hills used for sheep farming. The sun returned to give them a beautifl look. We arrived at Napier late afternoon and ... read more

We left Wellington the following morning after the rugby Sevens Chaos and like most of Wellington we were sporting a huge hangover. We boarded the Magic bus after nearly a week away from it (hello old friend) and after saying goodbye to Barbara we set off for Napier. Our driver was an interesting fellow, giving us his whole life story on the journey. Stories included his brother's time in and out of gaol and the mate who was abused by a priest, the priest still being protected by the Church today!! On the way, as is custom with Magic Bus, we stopped for morning tea where we also got to see Kiwis. I was extremely excited about this; the others could probably confirm that I'd been going on about seeing a live Kiwi since I ... read more

On our way to Napier, we stopped at Huka Falls, a beautiful glacial blue river and waterfall with jet boat rides. We're saving our Jet Boat money for Queenstown, but it was definitely worth taking the quick trip off the highway to see the falls. After this, we stopped for lunch in Lake Taupo. The view across the lake with the mountains in the distance reminded us of home, absolutely gorgeous! Taupo itself was overly touristy and not very quaint at all. The main highway runs through town and along the lakefront. There is a park on the lake side of the road, with all of the shops, restaurants, and parking on the opposite side. However, there are few if any crosswalks! Go figure. It was like playing Frogger to get across the highway! We were ... read more

Gisborne, first city in the world to see the sun and the chardonnay capital of New Zealand, was best described as an acquired taste. It wiil probably rank in our minds as the Invercargill of this trip - closed on Sundays. Gisborne is also the place where Captain Cook first landed in New Zealand, exactly 237 years to the day before our arrival. The Cook connection obviously created additional interest from our perspective and the foreshore at Kaiti is scattered with various points of interest - lookouts over Poverty Bay towards the first land sighted at Young Nick's Head, monuments to the landing and quite bizarrely a statue, which now has been recognised as nothing at all to do with Cook given that the figure is dressed in French naval uniform. Whilst the city was showing ... read more
