Gisborne Spent two nights at a Homestay in north Gisborne and then we hired a car to take us all the way to Wellington at New Year. Eventually we got the bike into a Corrolla and ventured further south. At the Information Centre first thing we met again our intrepid cyclists from Malvern, Harvey and Catherine, who were staying in town as well. Then off to stay with Don with whom Lesley stayed with last time, a lovely man, who lives in a small bungalow in Hastings. And off to the Hawkes Bay Sun Club where we were greeted by a single member who then left for Rotoroa leaving us on the site on our own! We were in an old partially reconstructed home of three bedrooms but a bit needed doing. Next morning Lesley had ... read more

Seriously...for those of you that may have thought about coming here, stop thinking and book your ticket. Just one town/city/location makes is all worth it. Currently, I'm in Napier. The Art Deco city of the South Pacific. It's beautiful. Sits right on the Hawk's Bay and the beach is magnificant...not a sand beach, but black rock and sand...I think from the earthquake that happened here, but not entirely sure. I don't have much time to write, and I took a tour of wine country today...so I'm a little bit tispy...sorry for any missing/misspelled words, but really it should be expected. The wineries here were great. Several wines at each one. I was with a local guide and we had some unique access to the wineries. Bought another X-mas gift (John, get excited) and a little treat ... read more

Gem here, Few days behind in updating about our trip over the weekend with Chevy who we met pruning. We had shopped on Friday to get all the supplies needed for the weekend and told to be ready for 6am, thanks for that one Chevy. A sleepless night followed filled with BAD irish folk songs curteousy of the idiotic bloke duty manager of Napier YHA. His opinion was that everyone else in the building wanted to hear the awful sounds of a cat being strangled and churned out to try and sound like folk songs, when no one was actually sitting in the Kitchen where it was playing to listen to it, think they had all been scared off by it. But our room was right above so anyone for irish rover for the 3rd time ... read more

Ever since I became friends with ngaire I wanted to visit vist her hometown. It is something about going home with someone, when you really understand them as a person. Plus, getting out the hussle of welly is a good thing- NZ hometowns are where the cultural immersion really happens-in my opinion. Welly is such an international city- with ppl from all over the world. hastings, rather, is a genuine NZ town. purely kiwi. just what i was looking for! Hastings is a small town of around 40,000. It is in the middle of Hawke's Bay- a region on the eastern coast of the North Island. It is most known for its great wines made on the regions many vineyards. :) We caught the Intercity bus at 7 45 am. I woke up- and realized Ngaire ... read more

Hi again, Thanks for the sarcy comments 'bigbro'. Well the night in Taupo was rather more lively than we planned. With a meal and drink for what came to 4 pounds and a good view of the screen for the NZ versus Auz match. (NZ won for anyone who doesn't know. Well a few drinkies later and Laura and Elinor are dancing away and Dave being very entertaining as usual. The YHA there is fab, the guy is so friendly and the place gets a view of the lake in the distance. Next morning feeling a little tired we set of for Napier, arriving around luchtime for a picnic on the beach. Then spent a wee bit of time doing a winery tour, guided by our little map. Managed 3, park estate (rude host), Church road ... read more

Big news! Got woken up by Lucy the pregnant sheep bleeting and making very strange noises, she was due at any moment and after a few hours out pops a brand new Lamb. My mum was very proud and Lucy has bonded well although think the lamb has got her under her little hoof as she won't let here out of sight for a few moment to eat, think she will be a very skinny Sheep soon if she doesn't calm down. Very cute, name yet to be decided, we think it is female as no winkle seen. Ta ra for now. Gem.... read more

Greetings, informative blog coming, Tomorrow is the start of our serious travelling. Lots to do today, packing and organising and making sure we don't forget simple things like passports (Dave take note), lots of lists and lists of lists to tell us where we left the last lists (try saying that after a few shandys). We will be driving down to Wellington tomorrow and staying overnight and dropping the car off. On monday we fly to christchurch and pick up the campervan, we plan to stay a night there and then off we go, firstly crossing over to the west coast and just keep going. Hopefully around friday/sat of next week we should be doing a walk on the Franz josef Glacier. I have been trying to talk myself out of my fear of heights as ... read more

Rang the next door neighbours (Lance and Karen) today who own the surrounding farm consisting of 1400 acres. They had previously offered to take us for a day on the farm to see the sites and help out, so off we went at the crack of dawn! We came accross a sheep having difficulty lambing twins which unfortunately did not survive but thanks to a half an hour struggle by Lance (the farmer) and Gem, the mother is now doing fine (i was just taking pictures and urging encouragement from the sideline as a true guy should do!?) Fantastic experience, got completely covered in mud but learnt the invaluable art of mustering cattle through gates and answers to those questions only known by farmers like whats a hoggit? and how hard can a cow pat really ... read more

Welcome to the daily update of mcdonalds farm, Today greets the new arrival of two female piglets, no definate names as yet, maybe cagney and lacey, but suggestions welcome. They have grunts like barry white, are pink with mud splatted on them and are digging holes to Antartica in the pig pen. Itsa (goat, keep up), who has previously been resided in the pig pen was scared witless by the sight of these two lovies and made several bids for freedom, one successful. So there's me running after a flipping goat in my wellies expecting it to come back to the sound of its name, screaming for Dave's help. Our cunning plan of luring it back with the sight of its feeding bottle worked and it was promptly led back. Now she has been banned from ... read more

To those who have been keeping up with our "adventures", I have been slow in reporting on the ladies night at the local pub on friday night. Okay, let's just say even I was shocked and appaulled by the antics of NZ strippers, they would get sued in England for things they did. I can't even describe the women, my mother being top of the list. My reserved mum got dragged up on stage and had to spank a strippers arse!!! I will have to apologise to everyone that I was laughing so hard I did not get a decent photo to post on the site. I will just end by putting it as an "experience" I never wish to repeat, seen it, didn't do it and the t_shirt stank! By the way the troup were ... read more
