Hi all, Sorry for lack of updates. In all honesty Caroline has been working most of the time so we havent really been upto much worth reporting. Over the next few days I'll rack my brain and think back if I've missed anything you should know about. For the moment, we are in Napier, having driven 250kms here from Rotorua where we spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Napier is a very nice Art Deco styled city, the main city of which was re-built in the 1930's following a devastating earthquake which levelled most of the town. This therefore explains why the city and many of it's principal buildings are all now art deco in style as that was the era of the rebuild. It looks good for it too. Very kitsch. Pictures to follow. Just realised that I haven't updated this for a while, so here's what we've been upto: After our skydiving experience we headed up to Whakatane (via another geothermal valley) where we stayed with some more of my relatives for a few days. We had a great time there, got treated to BBQ's, beer and a lovely bed (made a nice change from sleeping in the van!). while we were there we made a trip back to Rotorua (where I made the most of the shops and bought some nice summery clothes) and spend a day driving up the coast which had beautiful scenery. we also got our van looked over and taught how to do some basic checks on it by my mum's cousin, which have proved to be very useful. We also experienced our 1st ... read more

Prynhawn da everyone! Mr T and I are shacked up in Todd, sorry, Toad Hall hostel in Napier having driven over from Taupo where we spent a night after leaving Rotorua. We glossed over much of our Auckland visit in earlier posts and have't been able to upload any photos so here goes.... The weather in Auckland justified a visit to the beach so in addition to Mission Bay we took a trip to Waiheke Island which also has a number of vineyards. A ferry leaves Auckland Harbour daily to Waiheke and the island is big enough to warrant a hire car for the day so the 4 of us (Dave and Anna accompanied us) chipped in about 5 pounds each for the car and set off to recreate our Antipodean version of Sideways (for those ... read more

Well I didn't get a welcome home this time at passport control in Auckland, but was still lovely to be back! Was not so lovely to spend 6 hourrs at Auckland domestic airport, which was like an oversize shed. (Ok slight exaggeration!) But sat pretending to use one of those back massage chairs that you pay for and that got me through! My Uncle and Mum picked me up from Napier Airport where the baggage claim was a trailor! Stayed with Mum at my Aunty and Uncle's house in Napier. Was so nice to have some proper food and be in a nice family home again! The day after I got there was my Uncle's 60th birthday celebrations (& Mum's on the same day) and family from NZ, Oz, England and USA was there, was so ... read more

Set off from our last stop Tairua? with the intention of stopping in another of the Dept of Conservation campsites south of Lake Taupo. Weather was fine if a little windy, drive down was uneventful apart from another pleasant meal stop (more 2nd breakfasts) We stopped at a cafe called Cat's Pyjamas in Katikati (aren't the town names fabulous). I had this ridiculous carrot cake topped with fresh strawberries (photo later). From there we drove down to Lake Taupo, stopped to get some info on local DoC campsites. By this time blue sky was disappearing but optimistic as ever we headed south looking forward to seeing Mt Ruape (excuse spelling) used as Mt Doom in Lord of Rings. Unfortunately by the time we had left Lake Taupo weather had really closed into heavy squally showers and ... read more

Windy Welly True to stereotype, the strong winds that blew during our ferry crossing out of Marlborough Sounds en route to the North Island got even stronger as we travelled through the Cook Strait and arrived in Wellington: the World’s most southerly capital city. To be honest, the most consistent thing about the weather all over NZ has been the strong winds, so we’re not quite sure why Wellington gets singled out! Wellington is the first place we’ve visited in NZ with anything even approaching the buzz that every good city should have. Unfortunately, the same compact, hilly, waterfront setting that makes it so attractive also makes it very campervan-unfriendly. There are no campsites anywhere close to the city and the nearest campsite (7km out of town) charges a premium for rubbish facilities. Since we weren’t ... read more

I left Paihia feeling that I could have easily spent longer there; but onwards, there are lots of places still to see. It is a long way from Paihia to Napier, but these are the two places that had been recommended to me so that's what I did. Upon arriving in Napier I dumped my bags and headed round to the pub with a Frenchman, Laurent, to watch Great Britain get beaten by NZ in the Rugby League Tri-Nations. The following morning I watched France get beaten by the All Blacks with Laurent; France really took a whooping. Napier is a one-off town as most of the buildings in the town centre are in the Art Deco style. The town was flattened in 1931 by an earthquake and the subsequant rebuilding was all undertaken in the ... read more

Rebuilt after nearly being completely flattened by an earthquake in 1931, Napier is now best known as "The Art Deco City" of NZ. The architecture is unique, making Napier one of the most photogenic towns in NZ. Hawke's Bay on which it sits, is also one of NZs premier wine-growing regions and so for our visit, a decadent liquid lunch was in order. We received some good local knowledge from a guy cleaning his car outside our hostel. We followed his wisdom and headed for the Clearview Estate to sample its award winning vino and cracking cuisine. Bottom line, it was the bomb! Unfortunately they're very small and don't export the stuff so we'll have to return to NZ if we want to sample it again. We did bag a couple of bottles to slurp during ... read more

Hi All, Well what a lovely place this is, the home of many wineries which is fantastic. The trip didnt start well with Amandas I pod getting stolen, but the insurance should cover and the place is too beautiful to be sad for long. Its the hottest part of nz we have been to so far, sunny most days apart from yesterday. As you can see from the pics we had our day at the races, that was a very hot day and exciting too. It wasnt like our race courses back home, very laid back and no betting slips on the floor, Steve had a winner on a coincidental horses name called Pinot Grigio, he decided to bet as we were in nz largest wine maker domain. And no he didnt buy us all a ... read more
