I've been trying to get on the internet for the past week or two but it just never happens. Now I'm finally here and I still barely have any time because I'm leaving again for who knows how long to who knows where. So... Two weeks ago on Tuesday the 30th of March I met Catherine at the i-site in Taupo. We went for a swim in the river, then a swim in the lake before heading off to Napier. That evening I checked into my hostel in Napier and asked at the front desk if they knew of any available jobs. The lady said she'd introduce me to Aussie Paul, Aussie Paul handed me an application to work in a packhouse, the next morning I was waking up at 5am to go to work at ... read more

Waimarama Wedding As the title suggests, Kaela & I were married on Waimarama Beach (Why-Mere-A-Muh) in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, on Friday, March 30th, 2007. Sorry it has taken us so long to get this out, however I returned from New Zealand a couple of weeks ago and have had a difficult time resizing a considerable portion of the photos so that this site would download them. So without further ado, we hope you enjoy. We left San Francisco on the 17th and crossed the international date line, putting us in Auckland on the 19th of March. Marley slept through the night which made the 13hr flight easier than expected. Each time I fly I swear they make the seats smaller and smaller, making my life misery. :-) We arrived in Auckland and headed straight ... read more

Napier Australasia » New Zealand » North Island » Hawkes Bay » Napier By UVMarch 17th 2007 Well, sometimes you just need a place to rest. For me, this place was Napier. I have been moving a lot in the week before, so I really needed to stop, and suddenly the conditions were perfect: small city, right on the pacific coast, peculiar Art-Deco architecture (it was completely rebuilt in the 1930th after an earthquake), excellent lookout from a near-by hill with magnificent sunsets, lovely friendly hostel and even two guys... read more

To break the journey up to Wellington, we decided to stay at Napier for the night, as we'd heard other people say it was a really nice place. We got there just in time for lunch and tickled our tastebuds with some organic food at Manna Soul Food Cafe, which did the job nicely. We had a walk round to look at the art deco buildings (Napier was flattened by an earthquake in the 1930's and had to be totally rebuilt). We also walked along the promenade, which was pleasant enough. We decided that we would find our accommodation, which was on the outskirts of Napier - Portside Lodge. However, when we got there, we just took one look at it and decided it wasn't a place that we wanted to stay (especially after our ... read more

Without a doubt (and not wholly unexpectedly) the absolute highlight of my time here in NZ was going to the Art Deco Weekend in Napier. The city of Napier (on the sunny east coast, I'd call it the kiwi riviera) was nearly completely destroyed in 1931 after an earthquake, so it was basically rebuilt from scratch. This results in one of the densest concentrations of magnificent art deco architecture in the world (along with South Beach Miami). Every 3rd weekend in February the city throws their beloved art deco weekend - and I just had to go to that one, didn't I? The whole weekend was such a fabulous affair, I'm finding it hard to find a place to start, so I'll try and start right at the beginning: On Friday (16.2), after a frustrating morning ... read more

Well what have we been up to in the last few days i hear you ask....Well kelly and i are still living, breathing and sleeping in this frigging van. I woke up with her hair in my mouth the other morning and every night we go to bed we open the sun roof of the van and gaze at the stars together- how romantic. So we have now driven up to the tip - Cape Reinga and seen the Tasman and Pacific oceans meet which was special and then drove down the motoraway and pulled off to surf the sand dunes and some sandunes these were. We all felt as though we'd stepped into the desert. James hired a board and surfed down them. Also visited ninety mile beach which is actually 56 miles long (no ... read more

I am very slowly creeping nearer to the bottom of the North Island. I am very, very quickly hurtling to the bottom of my bank account. Auckland I was planning to leave Auckland about 2 days after I got there, but a long weekend was coming up and it was a chance to spend time with Sharlene - because it could be years before I see her again. So whilst she and Jodi slaved away at work, I lounged about the city and continued to bludge off them. I walked to Auckland Domain which is a very pleasant park area. When I got there I was planning to walk to the museum, but after the effort of walking a whole kilometre I lay down under a tree for about an hour staring at the blue, blue ... read more

We left for Napier on Dec 30th for New Year and for Andy and Sara's wedding (that's friends of Dave's for those of you who don't know!). It took us about 2 1/2 hrs to get there since we did a few tourist stops along the way. Our first tourist activity was Craters of the Moon, which is a basically an underground volcano but all we see is the steam coming up from the ground. It took us about 40 mins to walk through and had lots of steam vents and mud pools to look at. We had about a week in Napier, so we spent most of our time touring around and doing the various things around the city. We went to the Aquarium one day and watched sharks being feed, went to the longest ... read more

We drove the short (20km) drive this morning from Napier to Hastings to trace some of my deceased relatives. On a tip off from my Uncle Steve we managed to find the library in Hastings where a very helpful assistant pointed us in the right direction of where my relatives used to live. We found the death records on micro fiche for Lillian Ellen Hampton and John Rowe, but nothing for Daisy Rowe. We also managed to find information on the burial plots of Lillian and John in the genealogy internet archives at the library and found out they had headstones in Hastings too. We drove to a flower shop and purchased a couple of small bouquets for the graves and then made our way to the cemetery where we managed to find all three headstones ... read more
