Not sure if 'excitement' kicked in until starting the descent into Auckland; it seemed like the flying was all we'd come for, because we were in the air and around airports for so long! The flights themselves were actually pretty painless as there were so many movies to watch. The transfer at LA however was distinclty less fun - LAX is a grim place, not the ideal place to spend 8 hours. We did manage to find a corner of floor and sleep for a few hours, which made it slightly more bearable. The car pick up was very smooth and speedy - so good to finally get out on the open road in our little Daihatsu Sirion, and that the journey had finished and the holiday could begin! We were met at the Celadon motel ... read more

So we stay one night in Coromandel and go to the small but well stocked supermarket to survive for the next 5 days or so out in the wild. We then head north, continuing along the progressively windy Pacific highway. The scenery was spectacular - on the left of me was sheer drops down to the rocky sea (sometimes just inches from the road!) and to the right of me was huge rocky slopes, (more often than not the road had been cut into the hillside - road signs warned of landslides frequently) or huge rolling green hills with valleys plunging down to the bays. After an hour, we reach the last place of civilisation before we get to the very top of the peninsular - called Colville, it has 1 shop, 1 cafe and about ... read more

Day 31 and 32 Coromandel Peninsula As I was feeling a bit better we venture with all our luggage to see the harbour in day light. It was a lovely sunny morning and it was great to get some fresh air. We decided to get the airport bus from the city back to the airport to then get our camper van company (Freedom Campers) to come and collect us. This worked out well and they provided us with a great service. Camilla (we named the camper!!) is fab she is 13 but has everything we need and is very well maintained, we were very excited to get her on the road. Our first stop was the supermarket to stock up on supplies for our three week trip. It was in fact a Westfield shopping centre and ... read more

The first Day and a half: Feb 17 thru 19th. I made it to LAX with no problems albeit an hour late because of a 150 mph headwind. However that really didn’t matter because I arrived at 11:25 and didn’t depart for Auckland until 8:30PM. As I waited to board the plane at LAX the scene reminded me of a cattle holding pen. The herd is milling around looking anxious, bewildered and some just blase'. Once on the plane the atmosphere was a little more like a combo pajama party and Boy Scout camp out. Even though I took a sleeping pill I didn’t get much rest as my neck was in a knot. Arrival in Auckland went smoothly even though the plane trip computer said the current temp at 6:24 AM was 147. 18th - 20th December 2008 Coromandel Town Coromandel Town is a pretty little place. It doesn't take long to walk around at all. I tried to get Rob to eat mussels from their famous smoked mussel shop, but he was having none of it! There are some lovely little colonial houses here - I took some photos - I wouldn't mind having a house in this style, they are so pretty. We spent a morning on the fun Driving Creek Railway, which takes you on an hour trip through the forest and hills. It's a miniature railway and quite a feat of engineering by the guy who built it, first as a hobby, but now it is an important environmental achievement because of all the trees they have replanted there. The chap in the booking office ... read more

Thursday, 11th Had about 2 1/2 hrs of sleep, had a lot to do before setting out. Got up at 4:30 & started packing. Was almost late for the bus, but made it with minutes to spare. Was on time for the ferry & we left port around 9:00 from pier 3. It took me a while to get my sea legs, was a bit nervous there for a moment. I got a little freaked out at some point, realizing I don't know where I'm going & don't even have a map of the area. Going down stream without a paddle! I found a map in my guidebook & deceided to head for the Long Bay Motor Camp outside of Coromandel town. The trip over was beautiful, this place is covered in islands, bays & gorgeous ... read more

Hi everybody Change of plans today. We had already planned to the Coromandel pennsiula today for a two night stay. However when we arrived in Coromandel Town we discovered that the actual Holiday Park was some 4 miles outside of town and miles from anywhere. No Restaurants of any description, and more importantly no watering holes. So it was a drive back into the town, find a shop and settle for a 'cook in' in the van, only the second time in three weeks. Nancy reckons we are slowly turning into Kiwi because we having to go to bed earlier than normal because the Kiwi's tend to go to bed at 9 pm (or so its seems) and everything closes down. And Jack l had a very nice bottle of Cloudy Bay with and after the ... read more

Our original plan was to be in Auckland for Sunday, but the hostel where we wanted to stay had nothing for Sunday night so we are more or less in a holding pattern here in Coromandel. It is not a bad place to be stuck, and as we have the park virtually to ourselves it works well to get some school work done before heading into town to buy the ingredients for supper. After dinner we settle into the TV lounge and watch the three channels they get on the big screen.... read more
