Coromandel Town. Walked around town. Really quaint old gold-rush style buildings. Gold rush town mid-1800's. Gold mining exhibition here and rock battery. Waterworks. Lots of arty, creative people here. Main street in town has loads of Galleries. Met a Tom Bombadilesque character with other 60 boars as pets on way out to see the waterworks park. Intelligent fella even though he obviously hadn't had a shower in years. Lived in a hut with the pigs.... read more

Up early after an early night and a good night sleep. Into the showers early before the rest of the site wakes up, then breakfast outside the van. Still sunny, we have been lucky so far We set off at about 09:00, we have decided that we will fuel up first thing everyday, as the petrol stations do not appear to be as available as we are use to. I programmed the GPS for a gas station at Whitianga. We arrived there and fuelled up and then parked and went for coffee/ hot chocolate. I have a pastry, I am really getting into the pastries and cakes, like date scones etc. Today is really good date, walnut and apricot cake!! We set off again. Progress is slow with steep winding narrow roads. But the scenery is ... read more

Auckland to Coromandel (Well, let’s be honest, Auckland to Coromandel via all suburbs of Auckland SE and SW of the great Route 1 South Highway!) Whilst picking up the Spaceship© (ie small car masquerading as camper – won’t we all have lots of fun until it rains!) was straight forward, as was driving on the left in a RH-drive car-like vehicle , following our instructions to return to the highway was anything but. Our initial feelings that Auckland was a small city were completely squashed today as we drove through lots and lots of interlinked suburbs (with absolutely no signs telling you how to get away from them) – so that is where the 1.3 million people live! Finally, and swallowing all pretensions to be an Englishman abroad, I stopped and asked for directions. Five minutes ... read more

Hello again everyone! I’m in Coromandel (the town) now, we spent the night before last in Whitinaga (pronounced ‘Fity-anga’) a small town in the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula. We went to the Hot Water Beach and dug a hole to soak in but found that the water was hot enough to boil a lobster so we had to find another place to dig a hole where it was slightly cooler. Anika, Kerstine, and Lena all thought that my newly bleached hair (I’ll get some pictures up after we leave Coromandel because I only have 60MB transfer here) had no practical uses, but who sees me but Tim and Luisa who took their weekend off to relax at the beach and do the Cathedral Cove hike. The only reason they were able to recognize me ... read more

Hi it is Laura again. I hope all is good with you all. Now where did Sam leave off… We felt ready to leave the South Island and that all our expectations and hopes had been met. Christchurch definitely highlighted this: its best use the airport and our exit. Unfortunately our day of departure was long and when our shuttle bus driver for the airport turned up 30 mins early at 6 am we were not best pleased. Mam I can hear you laughing now imagining trying to move me at such time in the morning. Once at the airport we faced two flights and a bus to get us to our end destination that day, Lake Taupo at 17:30. Both flights were short and pleasant as we flew Air New Zealand. We did however have ... read more

As I had to get up anyway for a long day of travel between Napier and Mount Maunganui (MM from now on) which is on the coast next to the city of Tauranga, I set the alarm a bit earlier and watched the dawn, so I was among the first people in the World to see the sky lighten, turn golden and the sun come out. It was a good thing that I did, as an hour and a half later black rain clouds had covered the sky. The route took us back into the centre of the North Island and we made several stops to pick up and drop off people at some of the towns I had already visited on my way South, including Taupo and Rotorua. At the start of the trip we ... read more

Up early as we volunteered to help on the farm in the morning. Walked over to the main house and our first task was to feed an orphaned baby lamb a bottle of milk. He was so cute!! Lets us get close enough to pet him. Then we had to feed the hens. Put some corn in their trough. The hostel owner gave each of us 2 farm fresh eggs!!! MMM. Then we were in for a treat as the men were driving up to the top of one of the mountains on their land to drive the sheep up there down the mountain. So we hopped into the back of the ute (truck) and held on to the metal railing. We stopped and picked up another guy and 7 sheepdogs. So there were 4 of ... read more

Took our time packing up and made some breakfast and then left our bags at the hostel and walked over to the car place. Signed the contract and got the keys. We get the car for $50/day with unlimited km’s and we just pay for petrol. Was then shown the car a little Nissan Bluebird. Never heard of those back home but was a cool car. Yes, luckily it was an automatic! I drove it back to the hostel which was so weird. First of all, you’re in the opposite side of the car of to drive and then you have to remember to keep left or the opposite side of the road and you have to remember to look the other way for traffic haha. But I got us there. Vera drove us over to ... read more

Sat 11th April 2009 cont. We drove to Coromandel town via Waihi Beach on the Bay of Plenty and at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula. We continued up north and through the Karangahake Gorge - the scene of the north island's first gold rush. It was also around here that the British and Maori fought in the New Zealand wars. We made a stop in Paeroa to get our photo taken with a giant bottle of L&P (Lemon & Paeroa) - a kiwiana soft drink which I bought a bottle of and it was actually quite horrible. Still its very popular here and is "World Famous in New Zealand" . The drive up the west coast of the Coromandel was beautiful - right along the shores of the Huaraki Gulf and the weather got better ... read more
